| Same old England 13:31 - Nov 20 with 12996 views | trampie | How have England got such an easy draw on paper yet again in this World Cup ? Before looking at the draw I thought they won't get past both Brazil and Argentina but it looks likely that Brazil and Argentina are going to be in a different half of the draw and destined to play each other in the semis, so any potential winner from the other half won't have to play the both of them (unless one of Brazil/Argentina don't win their group and perhaps they would be not that good anyway in that scenario). Brazil might be deemed to be better overhaul than Argentina but possibly not head to head versus Argentina (didn't Argentina beat Brazil in the last Copa America ) so if Argentina get past Brazil in the semis then there is as much chance of an Argentina v England as there is of any other possible finals. Iran, USA and Wales in the group for one of the 'big teams' in the form of England means they couldn't ask for better draw than that, then the possible easiest last 16 tie for them (possibly Senegal from Africa) then a potential Quarter final against France, France seem to be on the way down they lost 2-0 to Denmark last time out, they have injuries to their top players like Benzema and Pogba then England would have on paper a possible semi final against ageing Belgium. England couldn't hand pick a better draw if they tried. | |

O'Neills....The Garryowen? The way these games have gone it shows the idea of the draw being fixed to suit England is plain silly. To get through to the later stages a team has to be more just just strong on paper, they have to play well enough too. Wales did not play well enough, second half against USA aside, those performances would have seen us sent home whichever group we were in, a 45 mnute performance out of 270 minutes in a knockout tourney is just not good enough. Why would Trampie think any Europeans would be helping England anyway? its not like England are the most beloved country in World football.

| Same old England on 10:52 - Dec 2 by jack247 | I agree, no group was winnable, however ours was one of, if not the, best chances of second place. From Englands point of view, pre tournament at least, we probably would have been the fourth seed teams would have wanted to avoid. They would definitely have taken USA and Iran as the second and third seeds. Pot 2 - Mexico, Netherlands, Mexico, Germany, Uruguay, Switzerland, USA, Croatia. Pot 3 - Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, South Korea, Tunisia. Better to play the toughest fourth seed and weakest second seed, which isn’t far off what England got. They are also extremely fortunate to be paired with the group containing Qatar as top seeds, which essentially meant the likelihood of playing a pot 3 side in the second round, which happened. We didn’t win a game because we didn’t play anywhere near our capacity. |
I don’t see how that is accurate when all 3 opponents are ranked in the top 20 in the world - on merit. You usually need 4 points to go through on average. Qatar 3 points, then 1 points vs either Ecuador or Senegal, is infinitely more achievable than having to get 4 points from two teams in the top 20. Same can be said for Saudi and then a point from either Poland or Mexico. But remember, we are talking about England here; not Wales. As number 1 seed, having 3 teams in the top 20 is one of the toughest groups you can get, to pretend it’s an easy group is just silly. On the whole, our group was the strongest across the board. It’s just people clearly have no idea how good Iran or USA are (as proven by the comments here before each game) and stuck in their dated thoughts of what countries are strong. The English haters can come up with all the conspiracy theories they want but that's the reality. Personally I hope they don't win it but I do believe they have the best squad in the tournament. |
You don't know all the players in the other squads USA outplayed England. Fact. There is not much chance that England have the best squad. McGuire and Henderson as World Cup winners ? It seems, at best, unlikely. The Beckham team with Scholes, Rooney, Rio, Gerrard, Terry, Lamps, cashley cole etc was a lot stronger on paper.

I think that was a theme with many. It’s understandable as they aren’t really a nation that we see very often. But looking at their results and their trajectory shows they are probably stronger than us as a team. They beat Uruguay and drew with Senegal just before the tournament, losing 2 in their last 18. England are a very good team on their day, individually they are superb but it’s their gelling as a team which traditionally lets them down. However when they click like they did against Iran then they are largely unstoppable.

Wales of 3-4 years ago, would’ve easily qualified. However, it’s been good for wales as a county, brought us more onto the world map, especially playing the US, perfect timing with the Wrexham documentary

As usual a load of guff with no substance. You posted for months McGuire would be having sleepless night worrying over our English centre forward, that went well. Henderson has won more trophies than the Welsh midfield put together including player of the season,I presume you think Ramsey does a better job. You really are thick as shite.

Only welsh qualified players play for Cymru. Big Kieffer was looking forward to knocking England out - his words not mine. Tells you were his heart is though. McGuire is a donkey. Henderson is so bad his second touch is a tackle, or even a header. Embarrassing. I am not questioning the quality of Stones, Walker nor the Irish players Rice and Grealish. Phillips is excellent and Bellingham sure to be world class. Saka and Sterling are match winners. Kane is great for Spurs. Whereas you are a happy clapper England fan who has zero football knowledge to call on. One question for you though - is this England team better than Beckhams England team ? Come on then you are a self appointed football expert, answer that one. One word will do it.

We all know the score. All the Welsh guys qualify for Wales under the rules. There are a few 17-19 years olds who could play for Wales Seeing how their careers develop first. George Abbott at Watford looks a prospect. Chem Campbell and Own Hesketh Wolves prospects declined u21 call ups. Campbell is a tidy wide man in the Wolves XI squad. Hopefully Luke Harris and Jordan Jones are fully committed and will not turn. Harris is Jersey born. The Bristol city Da Silva is eligible. Wales can only do well if they are more than the sum of their parts. Page does not seem able to get the team passing accurately and play on the break. Slapdash play was seen. Passing under pressure which Martin is spending a lot of time on to the disgust of some on here is an alien concept for Page. Switzerland another small nation do it for fun. It takes time and Swansea lost the habit when Laudrup left season on season.
