Everything Russell Martin said after losing to Birmingham City 5th Feb 2023 10:00
A dejected Swansea City head coach faced the press post match after the 4-3 home loss to Birmingham City. Here is his full interview. Remember none of these pre match and post match interviews are scripted so you always get the full raw emotion from the Swans boss. 0

Just watched the press conference. I hope he’s got someone to talk to privately, but worried about his mental health. Whatever his perceived failings, righty or wrongly, he’s a decent man with a young family who’s struggling at the moment.

Appears as if the owners are not happy with what he said but he has called them out from what he perceives to be issues behind the scenes.

Time and a place to do that, you don’t create disharmony in the club like that by making a self serving statement and airing dirty laundry in public. He has to be far more professional than that, he intentionally created a divide between ownership and day to day staff, it was a shocking interview from the perspective of what his remit should have been.

I’d hope that with the pressure all professionals in the club are under, there’d be some kind of supervision within the club 🤞

There most certainly is, Obafemi and Paterson being examples.

But like all leaders who take responsibility privately he may well not be considering himself at this time.

Agree John.
I think he is a man of principle who has no doubt tried all ways to deal with the owners but to no avail.
So I think his calling out of the owners was a necessary evil
I take my hat off to him.

Disagree there, had he not said that he would have been slated for ‘not being honest ‘ or ‘refusing to answer questions’ or ‘being a puppet to the owners’

What should he have said to the question ‘What happened in the transfer window ?’ ‘We tried our best but just missed out ?’ . He was asked questions, he answered them. None of us knows what’s going on, he does.

He comes across like a decent, honest man, who’s been pushed to the end of his tether. Perhaps too nice ? But someone who has the heart of the club in his mind.

It’s not dissimilar to some of our recent reports, clearly some people believe them to be opinion when they are obviously reporting information. Martin has the same issue.

It’s not about honesty it’s about being clever and working with the good of the club in mind. It was a petulant interview and one where he looked to absolve himself of future culpability.

He should have echoed the owners statements regarding the transfer window. Everyone tried, everyone is disappointed with the outcome. To create groups was ludicrous and created an atmosphere that was already bad and made it worse.

Being a nice man shouldn’t come into it, he needs to be professional. That presser was not professional and they would be rightly annoyed at him for that.

If it is the case that not everyone did try, that he was given false promises, that the goal posts were moved, that they messed around with transfer negotiations and refused to sign them off, why would he endorse what they said ?

I’m presuming that is the case but in that scenario, he’d be lying. It’s the equivalent of the government’s cabinet going on tv and and endorsing what they know to be lies.

But of course everyone tried, why wouldn’t they? It’s within their interests to.

You don’t have to endorse these things anyway. Nobody asked him to endorse anything, he just had to give a professional and honest answer the good of the club in mind.

That answer was simple “we are all disappointed, all worked hard but we have a good crop of players and we will try and let it impact us as little as possible.”

That’s management. You manage more things than just games, you manage the media too, all with the remit of what’s best for the club.

He didn’t do that. He intentionally made the situation worse to absolve himself of where he is heading in the league.

‘professional and honest answer the good of the club in mind. ‘

Can that not be two different things ? What is a professional answer may not be the same as an honest one with the good of the club in mind.

Your answer is management speak, and would have been called out for what it was.

May I suggest that you are presupposing that the owners are blameless and Martin is simply passing the buck to save his backside. How can the owners, this far down the line be learning.

But I just gave you the answer that combined honesty and professionalism. It’s not management speak, it’s simply how it is.

Everyone annoyed, everyone worked hard, going to try and not let it affect things. It really is that simple. If he’s accused of not elaborating then so what? It’s better than creating a cloud over the club.

The owners are not blameless in this window, they admitted there were some mistakes made with regards to deadlines and not imposing them on clubs. But others were simply players not wanting to come and offers not being accepted despite going for less eventually to a club the player was interested in going to. That’s football.

But these owners are vital for this club and are currently propping it up. To create such an atmosphere towards them is dangerous and damaging.

He responded with the original media input by the owners that quite frankly threw the recruitment team under the bus by stating in a round about way that the prep work wasn't done.....players not wanting to come down here despite them willing to offer more for players!

You can understand the place Martin is currently in, didn't get what was told and then gets it rammed back in his face along with the rest of the people involved.

The owners should have cone out and been a lot more oroffesional than they did.....owners need to set the example and they didn't.

One of the yanks need to get over here ASAP and face up to the music and try putting things right......they have created a shiite storm by not delivering and then put the fingers towards others and tried building themselves up in doing so.

The whole thing stinks.

What are we 7 years in ?
Still things get worse under the owners
People can kick Martin all they want, but when he is gone and the new manager has to deal with the same issues underr the same owners, perhaps then the pro-owners will wake up ?

In short John,we should forget this internecine squabbling as it is distracting us from what is the key issue.
Our plight IS down to the owners as they employed Martin.
It is HE who dictates tactics and prepares players
Performances are his legacy
“ we are fourth in the league “ seems now what it always was, abject drivel aimed at kidding fellow forum readers and the authors themselves
No more play off talk would be a start to redemption and we concentrate on simply staying in this league and clear the decks for next year.

It’s February and the season is basically done . That in itself is shocking .

Which issues?

Putting more money in than any other owners in our history.

Giving Russell Martins inept performances more leeway than should be expected as well as millions of pounds to buy players from his former club he now just puts on the bench.

When you say ‘it’s simply how it is’ you mean ‘in my opinion ‘

You say that everyone worked hard, but that’s the point, we don’t know if that’s the case. If he didn’t ‘over elaborate’ it would simply be a cover up and he would have got unfair criticism. Maybe he has had enough ?

The perceived ‘mistakes ‘ is my point, professionals shouldn’t be doing that in such a catastrophic way as to mean not one person was signed. No one.

Have they not created this atmosphere themselves ?

Any competent manager would get this team into the top 6, I have no doubt about that.

Even more so with the continued investment from the owners at levels we have never seen in our history.

This narrative being created is gross, and the Martin cult is only proving itself to be exactly that. It’s shocking.

I don't think any competent manager would, I think a manager who got us top 6 would be doing an absolutely fantastic job.

The squad is thin and we have some players who are over hyped as better than they are. I think the Grimes situation is a perfect example, we have a very decent player on our hand but a player last year who had just 6 months remaining on his contract........you would have sworn he would have had half a dozen clubs lining him up if you believed what you read from some on here.

Spending money doesn't guarantee things, we spend money on players with potential.......potential to get better and make us a profit.

I don’t, as I’ve said many times, if we put every player we had on a free transfer. The majority (youth players aside) would be going to clubs higher in the pyramid than us, be that within this league or the one above.

Agree.
Yesterday was a prime example.
Our main keeper was woeful, but we have no one who can replace him.
Darling comes on and has a mare.
Whittaker comes on and his only contribution is getting caught offside.
No strength in depth.
Any "decent" manager ( so called ) would struggle to get us in the top six

Martin brought in both Darling and Fisher.

A competent manager probably wouldn’t have, and also probably wouldn’t have reduced us to 10 men for the last 20 minutes of play.

Plenty of times you have posted that we have a decent squad and that a competent manager would have us in the top six.
So that would mean if a new manager came in tomorrow he would have the same squad and succeed ?
The reality is the squad is paper thin and needed strengthening.
The fact that it didn't happen wasn't down to Martin or anyone this side of the pond

If Martin hadn't disregarded both OkoFlex and Stevens that's at least two additional players who would probably have been available to us yesterday. People can't claim that our squad is thin and ignore one of the major reasons why it's two players lighter than it was in December.

Besides, on the bench yesterday we had a £1.5m central defender in Harry Darling, Kyle Naughton, Whittaker, and Cundle, not to mention Cameron Congreve, who many think has what it takes to go all the way. It was not a weak bench.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
