Simple really the women and children left because the Russian deliberately targeted and killed civilians. So far over 8000 unarmed civilians have been killed by Russia and 16,000 injured.
They of course fled from the advancing Russia army as it looked likely Kviv would fall in the early days of the invasion in fact Russian troops were in the outskirts of the city until the were halted by the Ukrainians army and forced to rapidly retreat back to Belarus. The Russian have continued to target civilians for the last year. The attacks have recently significantly reduced as Russia has run out of long range missile. There antiquated artillery only has a very limited range.
