May be better for youngsters to take an apprenticeship rather than have the "University experience"

That definitely would help with an overall plan.

However there’ll remain a need for degree level jobs and I worry we’re shutting down the pathway for far too many.

We’re importing large numbers from abroad to prop up some of our public services and that’ll only grow with these changes.

I agree with this although Gwyn is correct that there will always be a need for people degrees.

Of course there will always be a need for people degrees, but do we need a degree in "John Lennon's left testicle" to get into the police force.

I don’t think you need a degree to enter the police force (although I agree that any testicle based qualification seems unnecessary for police work 😉)

You're correct but the sprog would be expected to obtain the police equivalent to a degree during their training, I know someone who obtained one outside the force who had no idea how life and society itself worked ,perhaps they should be concentrating on life skills rather than a degree

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Most jobs do not need a degree so why 50% of people have to go to university is a mystery. People often learn quicker on the job and often have more and better practical skills the university students. Further education qualifications together will practical skills are often better for a large percentage of people who earn money and don't run up huge debts

Clearly their is a need for degrees I some work areas

Don’t disagree with you on any of that.

What I will say it that one of the reasons that nurses, teachers etc. are still on strike is they have to have a degree and will be paying for it for the rest of their lives.

We need these altruistic professions so they need to pay enough for newcomers to pay housing costs, loans, pensions and childcare. The last two are the ones that’ll fall off the end which just kicks problems down the road.

The changes mean that those borrowing the money will have to pay it back when they earn less and for longer if they haven't paid it off before.
But, if you are going in to a career that won't give you enough money to pay it back in under 40 years, then you have to question whether its worth going to Uni at all.

It's more divide and rule by the Tories.

They do like to make a balls-up of many things though so a bit of background in testicle based knowledge might be useful.

Unfortunately for a lot of jobs (and it’s increasing) a degree is becoming the entry point when it really doesn’t need to be.

Having a highly educated workforce is key to a prosperous future but as has been said in this thread degrees aren’t necessary for all roles and on the job training and staff development should be the way forward.

The concept of opening up education was sound, it was intended to increase social mobility and opportunity for more people so that the top jobs didn’t just remain the preserve of the affluent. Unfortunately, it’s not worked out that way and it’s just become a cash cow which for a lot of people won’t deliver any tangible benefits other than to trap them in huge debt which will have origins effects moving forward. Todays kids won’t be able to afford houses etc etc.

Wales and Scotland currently have different regulations, but they’re nothing to say the English chances won’t follow here.

A two year ‘degree’ in ‘advancement’ incorporating management of finances, relationships, personal responsibility and awareness. Home economics and future planning. Also discipline and behavioural strutted in to the course. Fitness etc. Establishing the persons skills base and areas they are good at for future employment. Could even be running your own business.

I’m surprised the govt haven’t looked into this as a more rounded young person would save them money in the long term.

Just an idea.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Isn't that more like conformity to the state rather than free thinking education that a university is supposed to encourage?

I think the main point coming through this thread is there should be options.

That, and me banging on about if we want nurses and teachers a different approach is needed.

I agree with you 100%.

My sister had been a nurse for 20 years but when she wanted to secialise she needed a degree. It was ok because she could afford it but many can't.

Who do we expect will be taking care of us in another 20 years? Who will be teaching our kids.

I have a half sister who has a degree in art and can anyone guess what she does now? I'll save the bother, she qualified as a teacher but cannot get a teaching job, she is now a teachers assistant. Her art degree is pointless. It's a waste of expensive uni time.

Parenting is shite in a lot of cases.
How can it be any worse than it is now ?

Thank you, I thought it might be, as there are other incentives also in place to study in Wales. This could be an even bigger factor in students deciding where to study.

Unfortunately Universities have gone woke and no longer encourage free debate. You only have to look at the number of distinguished academics and politicians who have been Cancelled for having different views.
The Universities usual hide behind inclusitivy and having safe spaces for their students. As if put younger generation will need councilling if they hear different opinions.
