| What if? 22:01 - May 19 with 5240 views | ReslovenSwan1 | What if Martin signed a new two year contract in March. What would be the difference? I personally did not recommend it back then, few did. Not a lot of difference I suggest. Just another £1m or £2m in the bank in compensation. This is being used as another stick to bash the owners. Martin leaving is not the issue. Who is replacing him is the issue. If he has the same philosophy he has a ready made squad starting to get more consistent. Swansea can put a gentlemen's agreement for SFC not to raid the club. Martin wants to leave Swansea like Manning does. It is business life. | |

From a US point of view losing faith in one expensive striker (Obafemi) is bad Losing faith in two (Obafemi and Patterson) is careless. Losing faith in three (Obafemii Patterson and Whittaker) is rank bad management. "Here you are Russell try to work with at least one" (Whittaker). "We are losing £250k a week Russ". "I did not want him back it is a decision from the ownership group". "we need help up top". [Post edited 20 May 2023 14:44]

Yes one bad apple to deal with is bad but an understandable mistake. When you fall out with three then perhaps it is the way the apples are stored. i hope that helps you understand the US view point. Marsh perhaps had a fourth bad apple on the way on £26k a week in Grant. Thank god WBA pulled the deal. This allowed the man labelled the 'new John Hartson' (Scottish pundit- please ask for details) to thrive. (Cullen) (er i know). A bad January window was with Potter which fans thought was great because the club spent £7m. McKay (yes Mckay) Celina, John and Asoro. Cooper drummed three out after one of the meekest performance in SCFC history. a 1-5 hammering at Loftus Road . There were non negiociable's all over the place as Illias Chair had a field day. McKay was a non negotiable specialist. Celina did a little better but did not cut the mustard for Cooper and was dispatched. This January had four mistakes less and the signing of Liam Smith who will feature next season.

I back the owners who are keeping the club alive and kicking. I supported and still respect Jenkins and Morgan. I now back Levien and Silverstein who have lined up money for Martin to spend and called him over to make arrangements. Martin did not show up despite being under contract. The fans themselves have to look at their own ownership. They had a chance to cash in for £21m but chose to own further shares over holding cash. A calamitous strategy. The Us owners have made plenty of mistakes. Sacking Guidolin. Not keeping a close eye of recruitment under Ledbetter who's record at high value end was getting poor. Not replacing Scott with a more senior man.

| What if? on 13:37 - May 20 by ReslovenSwan1 | Did Sheff utd treat Heckingbottom like shite? No they did not, the gave him a job and told him to get on with it using the squad at his disposal. Did they have a disastrous January window? Do you not remember? Did he sulk and start pointing figures at the owners? No he did not. Sheffield Utd January signings Ziltch. Their squad like Swansea s squad was fixed in the previous Summer. Martin did not fill the gaps in the summer right wing back and fell out with three of his strikers. He was forced by the US owners to adapt and innovate. When he did this he prospered. Martin has admitted he sulked after the window and did not perform to his best. I have never heard a manger say this before. Unprofessional in my opinion. I cut him some slack as he is a young man learning the ropes and seemed to be learning from his mistakes. Swansea is a great club and one of the best in selecting managers. Southampton clearly trust in Swansea's judgement as Martins managerial statistics are bog standard average. |
Unprofessional maybe. But honest and authentic. Maybe more managers should act like that. And humans.

I genuinely think his personal health was badly affected by it. I’m uncertain if that’s sulking though.

While football is not the most important job in the world it can be stressful. I am not one to conflate being sad, unhappy and miserable with mental health. If had a strong philosophy and it was not working I would be angry, frustrated and miserable. Martin likes big transfer windows and this was a potential quick fix and an escape from his problems getting results. Sheffield united singed no one. No drama there. Martin made a big issue of the fact they signed nobody. I interpreted that Levien and Silverstein were not impressed with the proposals made to them. Marsh and Winter will leave on account of this perhaps. Hegginbottom did not lose focus. Martin found a way and the right way he figured out on his own. This occurred while being put under pressure and after a period of reflection. He was not let down in any way. This refocusing has surprisingly earned him a big pay day nearer his home on the south coast. he is attracted by the money and his contract makes absolutely no difference in my opinion.

Who are they then.? For my part i only compared Swansea's January window with Sheffield United's January window. Neither brought in any first team players. In January you need less player not more as there is only about 20 games left. Sheff Utd actually went on a FA cup run going deep into the competition and Swansea crashed out in round three. Swansea had a 'catastrophic' window apparently.? Heckingbotton got on with it. Another 6 or 7 teams only brought in one loan. Martin admitted he lost focus after January costing the club a top 6 chance. Stuff happens live an learn. I never criticised him for that at the time. [Post edited 23 May 2023 14:02]

Martin was happy with his squad in the summer and lost nobody other than Benda and the people who had issues with Obafemi and Patterson. Very few injuries and he had Walsh coming back. He lost Obafemi and got Whittaker back who was on a rich vein of form. Martin was very upset and this more so than anyone else in the league. Heckingbottom was going for top two. Martin was going for top six. Martin got upset with the owners Heckingbottom got down to work. Martin did well to be fair, eventually, but lost his mojo for several weeks which cost Swansea a chance of top 6 in my opinion. I would not complain about it as he learned lessons on the job which is personal development. However he is leaving without finishing the job he started and having been given a lot of patience from the ownership group. This forum and the Wales on line reported he pulled out of the meeting in the USA *where he would have made the case for keeping on Latibeaudiere , Naughton Cundle and Sorinola chosing to talk to Southampton instead .

Patience works two ways. He has been patient with those above him who made some strange decisions during the transfer windows Many managers would have walked then
