| West Brom New Years Day on 17:48 - Jan 1 with 1675 views | Dr_Winston | An odd game tactically. Playing without a striker cost us in terms of creativity, but it didn't half make the press effective. WBA simply couldn't keep the ball long enough. Second half we subbed our way to a more conventional setup and it was like our half time drinks had been spiked with Mogadon. WBA went up several gears and it seemed like only a matter of time until we conceded. Enter Jay Fulton. Goal aside he was excellent when he came on. Helped us to bully our way back into dominance. Yalcouye probably our best player but nobody really played poorly. Key did well in the first half which will be a boost to his confidence hopefully. Pleased to hear the amount of support for him from around me in the East. People wanted him to do well. | |

Yes both teams substitutions made it better for them until fultons worldie. I dont think anyone, especially you, saw that coming 😉 Thought yalcouye and especially melker played very well but my mom was vigaroux, he made some great saves, especially couple in their 15 minute purple patch. If we get another RB and a winger we can hopefully keep this form up.

Absolutely shocking. Allowed them to rugby tackle then giving free kicks against us for nothing challenges.

True the ref had a mare and the linesman gave a couple of decisions the ref didn't, but we don't help ourselves going down far to easily, it seems we have a reputation now and it will be hard to shake off. We are grinding out results now which is good, its not pretty but its effective. Excellent by Fulton today and not only the goal. Before he came on we were getting over run but with Stamenic who was again excellent they gained control again. I thought Key had a good game before he went off, hopefully he has turned the corner. If we are going to play a false 9 again we need to get players into the box a lot quicker or there is no sense playing wide and crossing, several times today we had to hold up the move because there was nobody there for a cross. Vigouroux made several vital saves and kept us in the game, but what a stupid thing to do we could all see it coming, to lay on the ball, stay down and then get up with the ref counting down was stupid in the extreme. Three points, a clean sheet and up to 15th and the same points away from relegation as the play offs, its been a decent Christmas.

Agree on how to make the false 9 work. We need to be quicker moving both players and the ball than we have been. I think they're capable of it, but it will take time.

They were still on top until the goal. Its a bit fortunate we scored as the game could have ended differently. As an aside mason was having a right go at the ref and his team at the end of the game about the goal. Its lucky the ref didnt see ronalds challenge as a foul as quite a few would have.

The tackle by Ronald was exceptional, he doesn’t use the ball that well in possession as much as everyone would like but his tracking back is getting much better. We won that game today because of it.

| West Brom New Years Day on 19:04 - Jan 1 with 1347 views | RichardO | How many times did the ref let WBA gain ground from throw in even after the ref telling them to go back and they still didn't take the throw in from the right place instead of using the point of exit of the ball on the touch line as where to release their throw they used it as the starting point for their run up to the throw in yet was so quick to penalise Vigouroux time wasting. | | | |

This is the thing and it is the same for Yalcouyé, Wales is being considered for a loan and if we get through this month without news of Yalcouyé returning to Brighton I will be delighted. Thats the problem now, successive managers that’s Sheehan and Matos have ignored him. And if he goes baxk as a result we won’t be exchanging niceties the finger will be pointed. Wales looks like he knows what he is doing. Get him on the pitch more.

| West Brom New Years Day on 19:53 - Jan 1 with 1147 views | wwcigne | Great battling performance again and well deserved,we got in WBA’s faces from the off and they didn’t like it and couldn’t find a way to do anything about it , they improved after their subs but we stood up to them and managed to grind the win out Everyone played well today ,a mention to Josh Key who was playing very well until he got injured, hope he’s ok Widell ,Franco and Yalcouye ran their socks off and made real nuisances of themselves Ben and Cam were solid and Ronald ,Tymon and Inoussa took the game to them very well Vigs made some really big saves to keep them out and all our subs made a big contribution Vitor raised eyebrows before kick off with his selection but his tactical awareness have changed us for the better and it certainly paid off All in all a great performance and a very important 3 points Well done all COYS YJB | | | |

| West Brom New Years Day on 23:37 - Jan 1 with 668 views | swancity | Two very evenly matched teams, I’m still unsure why we played without a striker at home as we lacked a cutting edge. This “false nine “ stuff? Just don’t do it. Simply no need. Anyway that apart a very hard working performance with a solid contribution from every one out there. And with the play offs now in sight it’s an interesting time. Pleasing for Jay Fulton. A good pro he’s not going to start too often this season but he’s reliable and experienced. I was right behind his shot that ended up in the net. Dipped and might have taken a deflection? When your goalkeeper is man of the match that says a lot. On chances if was even but they (WBA) tended to hit the target, we need to start doing that more often now. Onwards and upwards. Early days of course but our new manager is impressing. | |

Regards to your question about playing without a recognised striker, another poster has stated that Vip asked to be rested or Matos decided to rest him with more fixtures coming up. He clearly doesn't think Wales is ready to be the main man from the off, but hopefully with gain more minutes over the coming weeks and show what he's capable of. Our only other two options (Idah and Cullen) both unavailable. It worked out well, we managed to get some rest into our main goalscorer so hopefully he'll be a little fresher for the next set of matches and we picked up the full 3pts on offer Although I raised an eyebrow when I saw the starting XI I'm very impressed with Matos decision making so far in terms of the team he picks, the players he drops, rests and his use of the subs from the bench.... and long may it continue.
| West Brom New Years Day on 10:03 - Jan 2 with 334 views | streetlyjack | Credit where it is due Matos is making a very positive impression. I always wait for at least 6 games in before I start to form an opinion as you can't change systems overnight, the fact hes evolved this using the players he has in a short space of time during a hectic period (without his back up staff) is quite impressive. For me the major positives so far would be: - Galbraith at right wing back has given us a new attacking threat down the right hand side, it's refreshing to see the ball going forward more often than not (albeit to Ronald) - Burgess & Cabango are looking more compact and solid, winning a lot more of their challenges lately to give us a strong base. - Stamenic is now looking to go forward more and is more positive with the ball. - Widell has bags of energy and with more games under his belt will no doubt be a great addition. - Vipotnik seems to be holding the ball up much better and bringing players into the game which is great to see and makes such a difference. Still lots of issues to fix with Idah, Cullen's role, Ronald's attacking threat, Franco looking knackered but the signs are positive. Hopefully with the solid platform he has developed he can now utilise the loan players more so he has options to rotate tired or out of form players. Based on yesterday's game alone I can see that Yalcouye could make a real difference to the rest of our season if he can get a run of games, would be a shame not to utilise him whilst we have him. Credit where it's due Matos has made a positive difference so far (with the help of Leon and Joe which is also encouraging). | |

that was the reason for the corner at the end? because our keeper held the ball for longer than the permitted time? I think counted 8 seconds. So banged to rights but still.
