| Royal Navy is in the toilet 13:42 - May 17 with 4156 views | Martyn | Some say it's not our war to join. Others say, why help the madman Trump The bottom line is we can't. The Royal Navy is in the toilet Britannia rules the waves, my arse "Right now, the Royal Navy fleet looks like a construction site. All of the major classes of warships and support ships, without exception, are in various states of retirement, repair, construction, training, or crew regeneration. Some relatively new ships are tied up alongside but uncrewed as they await sufficient trained manpower and funding to be used operationally. It’s thought that of the force of just 13 destroyers and frigates, only around four are at sea. It’s the same story with attack submarines, where only one of the five vessels is known to be operational." "Only 25 out of 63 commissioned vessels are actual fighting ships. This force size is impossible to service Britain’s overseas responsibilities and has seen cuts of 50% in only 30 years. In 1996, there were 22 frigates, 17 submarines, 15 destroyers, and 3 aircraft carriers. Today’s First Sea Lord must attempt to carry out the same duties with seven frigates, 10 submarines, six destroyers, and two aircraft carriers. In addition, the U.K. underfunded new capabilities like domestic air and missile defenses and advanced command and control systems." Finally, after many excuses, posited as reasons, we finally send ONE shiop to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. HMS Dragon You cant make it up. With the USA sitting there with mega Aircraft carriers and fleet of ships Starmer thinks sending one ship will open the Strait. No wonder he/they got shellacked in the elections along with the immigration bit

| Royal Navy is in the toilet on 16:55 - May 17 by onehunglow | Fair comment The running down of our defence has been decades long Conservatives just as blameworthy Same with “ law and order” where Tories are and never have been the “ party for law and order” |
You could even argue that the Conservatives are more to blame as GDP on defence increased between 2000 and 2010 and then fell back under to Conervative government with an increase to highest levels for 3 decades under Starmer.

| Royal Navy is in the toilet on 20:43 - May 18 with 1182 views | ReslovenSwan1 | I thought this tread was about the Royal Navy A massive investment was made into two huge aircraft carriers also driven by Gordon Brown to create job security in the Scottish yards. I would thing a multitude of mini carriers would be better given the use of F35s which are vertical landing and takeoff if necessary. One " lucky hit" would take out 50% of UKs carriers and a chunk of the he nation' s air power. [Post edited 18 May 21:38]

Yet you say we need to pay even more tax when that doesn't work which it won't the likes of you will be saying the same thing, I used to work far more hours than I do now, but stopped after I could see the tax I was paying which doesn't stop there because my NI contributions increases as well, I've worked for nearly 50yrs like millions of others, due to retire next year and they expect me to live on the breadline after I've paid into the system for all these years. Wakeup and look around and see what's happening in this country. |
Our armed forces are ineffective, we don't have enough social care, we don't have enough police officers, we don't have enough prison spaces, people die waiting for an ambulance, the wait for NHS treatment is too long, there are potholes everywhere, our infrastructre is appalling, I can fly to Greece for less than I can get a train to London, we've got the most expensive energy in the world pretty much, the water companies pollute because they can etc. The place is in a mess. And putting it right will cost multiple trillions. We do spend too much on Welfare, far too much. We can't afford it. But what will happen if you suggest ending the triple lock? This is the area most of the welfare bill is spent. We can't afford to cut fuel tax unless we get the cash back elsewhere. Who is going to pay, or who will take the cuts to services on the chin? We're housing too many asylem seekers - but the cost has dropped by £3 billion a year under this government (that's enough to build a new destroyer, but in itseld is a drop i the ocean) - we've also just announced a taskforce to shut down the illegal highstreet businesses. That's the answer, stopping them wanting to come here. The Chagos deal has been shelved. Closer links to the EU will almost certainly pay for itself. Most of the cash to the Ukraine is a loan.

There’d be a big argument to say they do. Less people depending on secondary care because medication keeps them from needing it. I think it’s one of the few initiatives the Welsh Government have got right and those saying it is a waste of money are either not dependant on medication (I’m alright Jack!) or don’t care about others’ needs.

But they'd get medication free if we had the same system as England? At least the vast majority would. The last script I had was for Naproxen, I got it free. I could have afforded to pay the script fee or bought it privately if I had a provate script. I dread to think how much it cost the NHS.

I’d need to see a comprehensive list of medication that those between 18 and 60 qualify for. Dies it cover mental health meds, blood pressure meds, ophthalmic meds as an example. All these can result in far greater costs to the NHS if medication is not taken which many may not be able to afford if on low wage and not qualifying for benefits. Good for you that you can afford it, stick the money in a charity box on the pharmacy counter should you wish to demonstrate how virtuous you are.

The same carrier fleet that had to pull back after being hit by Iranian drones. Sitting ducks for missiles, and the US military command knows it

Recent events may have posed questions about the future functionality of navies, but they are far from obsolete. The Ukrainians have exposed weaknesses in the Russian navy, particularly in relatively compact small areas such as the Black Sea where there were the ships can’t retreat or escape, but when it comes to the open seas and oceans navies will continue to play an important role. I suspect most countries are already studying what Ukraine have done and are developing solutions a new weapons.

A lot of that is propaganda. The Russian black sea fleet has not been destroyed, not even close. However, this is not a sea battle. Iran on the other hand, has almost totally wiped out most American bases in the Gulf states and finished their presence in the middle east. Missiles have changed the game totally, as there is no defence against them - too fast and elusive.

Sorry mate don't like the pesky Tories but you blindly support a party which is equally bad and has stuffed Wales for 25 years. Like Drakeford now blaming blame blame. Starmer and Rachel no idea how a business runs Reeves. Let's all blame the last government. Free pass!!

I saw a thumbnail in WoL about Drakeford’s 10 reasons (or something like that) why Labour failed in Wales. I haven’t read it but if he doesn’t name himself in at least 9 of those then it’s totally inaccurate.

It's blame blame blame. No Tories about let's blame the two tier man. It's easy isn't it! Now when Rachel I've never run a business Reeves sticks employer NI for all and sundry from the big companies to the two or three man band it's a total disincentive. Guess what prices go up... inflation goes up to cover the extra cost. I've run a micro business with three to four employees. I was better off as a one man band. Less stress . If you've always been employed, that's fine but if you comment on running a business or any enterprise without experience you will never understand.
| Royal Navy is in the toilet on 20:01 - May 29 with 431 views | howenjack | 85 years ago last week the RN altered the course of WW2 . Germany invaded Greece they couldn't do it via a seabourne landing because Britannia ruled the waves . They sent the paratroopers in despite Hitlers reservations. Result was the Germans took a bit of a hiding from the allies - Brits aussies and NZ. aided by the very brave Greeks - especially the farmers . Yes the Germans eventually took control and the allies retreated to Sphakia in the south where destroyers picked up those who were lucky enough to make it . If the RN at the time were not strong then Hitler would have gone for a landing on the beaches they probably would have lost fewer men and taken control quicker . The way things panned out their troops were shot at while in the air in their parachutes with heavy losses . They expected to take Crete in about 2 days they were still fighting a week later . Why is this so important? Well Hitler couldn't launch operation Barbarossa until his southern flank was protected IE Crete . He feared the allies bombing the Ploesti oilfields in Romania from Crete and he needed the oil for his panzers . the Crete situation delayed operation Barbarossa which ended with the Russian winter causing the Germans huge problems. It also showed That the Germans were not invincible despite the fall of France Belgium Holland . 85 years ago may not be relevant now but history has a habit of repeating itself and those who fail to learn the lessons are doomed to repeat them. The navy today has a role to play despite all the advances in missile technology . The losses the Germans suffered on Crete ensured that there was never going to be another German airborne invasion in ww2. I recently walked through the German and allied war cemeteries on Crete . What hit home were the ages of the allies mostly 21 22 23 year olds . The Germans were a little older mostly 25 28 30 . It really hits home when you stand there and look at all the graves . Also in The German cemetery with over 4000 graves many of them died after 1941 . So they must have been killed by the Greek partisans . The actions of these brave Cretans kept the Germans occupied and tied them down resulting in less manpower on the frontline . They hated being there because they could never relax and were always fearful. The Cretans paid a high price though in reprisals but it never stopped them fighting back and in doing so showed exceptional bravery. | | | |
