If I read this report correctly what's even more tragic is that from September 2026 this education programme is being rolled out nationwide...too late for those above but hopefully useful for future prevention.

I live in an area with many bodies of inland water including the Thames - In 2022 a young girl drowned at Caversham on Reading at a supervised water park, and two adults in separate incidents nearby. 226 accidental drownings in the UK in 2022 alone.
Have emailed the Secretary at my kids' school and asked her to pass this info on to the Head.
Mine have both been swimming since babies and go paddleboarding, boating and using water parks and sensible kids but even so a timely reminder has been had.

Learnt to swim at Polperro Harbour on family holidays in Cornwall way back when .
It was an inlet with no real concerns for tidal changes.
Had an old , think it was a Vauxhall Viva inner tyre tube as a swimming aid to keep me afloat in them days , looking back a crude but at least a chance of keeping your head up .
Again will suggest swimming lessons in our Education System are low on the curriculum even if they can find a local swimming pool in their area .
Younsters want to have fun and enjoy themselves outdoors and that is a positive result rather than staring at a computer screen hours on end .

Do the kids in school have water safety taught? We used to have a water safety officer come around and give a presentation when in junior school. No swimming in rivers etc. I became a lifeguard as a part time job ( mainly pool) but i did a few presentations for guides brownies scouts etc. The usual how to coil a rope throw it in, how to keep afloat in water etc.
Whether its my bsckground but when on hols around the pool and at the beach im constantly on the look out. Ive pulled 2 kids out of holiday pools who otherwise were in trouble. I was at saundersfoot yeterday and couldnt believe the number of kids in armbands with inflatables etc in the sea without supervision. | | | |

It used to be a parents obligation to ensure their kids attended swimming lessons, it was a part of many kids growing up. Swimming clubs, Saturday mornings shivering wrapped in a towel waiting to jump in and do a form of breaststroke, staying afloat, remember those old floats you used to cling on to whilst kicking your legs frantically.
It just isn’t in many parents eye line to do this, kids are more interested in phones and talking like they are gangsters. The excuses for not taking that extra step by parents I’m sure are various but a lot of it is down to laziness.
Many areas supply free swimming lessons, Hackney borough and many London locations. Or a token £1-£2 for membership. Getting kids to go will be difficult if the parental obligation isn’t there. There will be more of this sadly.

That’s very sensible, swimming is a life skill. The quality of lessons varies, but it’s really important people can swim.
Quite a lot of leisure centres offer this in the school holidays, from memory I’m pretty sure that it used to be funded by grants from the Welsh government.
When I was a nipper at junior school we would have free swimming lessons at the Afan Lido, it was very basic but at the end of the course we’d all be expected to be able to swim the length of the 50m pool, tread water for 5 minutes and do a surface dive.
Swimming lessons were on the national curriculum (and I believe they still are) but the number of pupils going through the program has fallen drastically. Councils now charge the schools per pupil, schools have to pay for buses and all this eats in to the general budget and many schools can’t afford it. Wifey used to work in a school, years ago the school would send as many kids as they could, but these days they only send who they have to - if they send anyone at all. In addition, a lot of the teaching in the school swimming lessons isn’t delivered by leisure centre swimming teachers - it’s delivered by the school’s staff who’ve gone on a course and generally they haven’t got a clue.
Many years ago, I was heavily involved with a local swimming club - if children want to become good swimmers that’s the way forward. [Post edited 31 May 11:03]

I did all that too. In retrospect, what the RLSS teaches about throwing ropes and reaching rescues etc is a load of crap.
I'm not convinced about this current float to live or just let a rip take you out until it dissipates advice either.
You will need a lot of composure to do either of those, especially float on your back in surf. Not going to happen if you are a non or weak swimmer.
We can give all the warnings and advice possible, but teens will ne teens and will get in the water to cool off. The only way imo is to teach all kids up to local swimming club standards and then into life saving. Doing the Benidorm breastroke is not enough.

Similar happened to me in Cala de Majorca years ago, the sea was rough that day and I love swimming in a decent surf, but there was a hell of a strong undertow, there were a few other families with us and the youngsters were enjoying, I swam out a bit then had a tough swim to get back into the shallows where it was pretty bad there, a few of got the lads out of the water, as it was getting very naughty.
My mate then went to get some fags and he saw lifeguards drag an older man out and were working on him, other were putting sunbeds on their sides to form a block around where they fighting to save the man's life, other lifeguards were struggling to get people out the water as you expect, by this time the police were there and were enforcing the ban, I think they even arrested one bloke the led him away anyway.
Unfortunately the chap they dragged out passed away.
We went back there a few days later in the holiday and it was lovely the sea had calmed right down, not been back to Cala de Majorca since though, that beach is lethal in certain conditions. |

Hurghada is very deceiving. Loved by divers but the pull on that under current, even close to the beach is lethal at times.
Schools should have swimming as a part of their curriculum.

All my grandchildren could swim before they had the school swimming lessons, they should be introduced earlier. But there are also parents who bother and those who don't. That is the same with all activities and sports. |  | | |
