As I’ve said before, I think London is the best city in the world and is considerably safer by many metrics than 30 years ago.
From a professional point of view it has the best schools in the country. By a mile.
The gap between disadvantaged children and their nondisadvantaged peers is also considerably narrower than in the rest of the country. Again, by a mile.

How can it be democratic for us to elect a government with a huge majority only for that government to be hamstrung to some extent because the HOL has a majority of the party we didn't vote for.
I say to some extent because it's logical to say that a Tory Lord is automatically going to have a different perspective from a Labour government.
Also the cost. Regardless of what people think about extra members of the Senedd, at least they were elected as compared with the 791 members of the HOL. | | | |

You want to see the real London get a few night-buses around the East End or South London you'll soon be wishing you had a stab vest on. |  |

Stayed in Bloomsbury Dem in March which was supposed to be nice we had a rough sleeper outside our Airbnb
Used to go to Hackney Speedway and imagine Waterden Rd is rather different now as would be the old White City track

Don't forget gentrification. Whole boroughs have changed due to money'd folk moving in. I used to walk down through Lambeth toward the Elephant and Castle for work and it was a little bit rougher than it is now. I don't know the net result but bang average terraced properties are selling for well over a million. Former council flats in blocks are selling for 3/4 a million.
My daughter is looking at living in that Islington area to become a Henry.
Yet other areas have seen the people who lived in the former areas pushed out and sharing with the mass immigration. London could be fun to visit but why anyone wants to immerse themselves in that place is madness | |

I had the misfortune of working there for a year. I never took to Shepherd's Bush at all.
Before that I used to run 3 miles to work every morning through the 3 parks (Hyde, Green, St James) running along the graffitied Grand Union towpath with its druggies and tramps was a bit of a come down after that.
No idea what The Bush was like in its heyday but the then newly built Westgate shopping centre seemed to attract a lot of feral yoof into W12. No I did not enjoy those days at all. [Post edited 18 Jul 10:28]

Yes definitely. I remember it being rough as was most of that area especially Peckham. I used to live Putney and rehearse in New Cross - amazed I was never mugged carrying a guitar and hanging around bus stops in the dark. Heard gunshots in Peckham one night. Not for the faint hearted that journey.
Been though there since and it has benefitted from development - I must visit Arments for Pie and Mash next time I'm there. Youngest is into history so a visit to the IWM is on the cards this summer.
