This is Burnham who come in wanting to put more money in our pockets, he's another of these clueless lying buffoon's that we've had. Burnham will already be the worst prime minister in history in the eyes of the Mail, express, telegraph, times, sun, GB news etc. We have to make money somewhere. Either through economic growth (not likely, not our fault) taxes or cutting spending. An honest politician wouldn't get elected. I suspect it's a load of guff from the press.
| This rumoured Death Tax on 18:57 - Jul 30 with 3812 views | JJBomber | The wider question is why Burnham can do what he likes. Changes in tax policy should be discussed in Parliament and voted on. I think most would agree that the current care system needs fixing and that those who lose their like savings (often to homes whose ownership can be traced back to hedge funds) are having a raw deal. It could be that 10% looks pretty peachy compared to all being sucked away. Again, I’m not advocating the policy as I don’t know enough about it, but if you complain about every attempt to fix the system with a cost attached, then best not to moan about care home fees a and poor care for the over 65s | | | |

And that's the point. For once we have a politician looking at solving a problem, where the results won't be seen until way beyond the current parliamentary cycle. It's going to cost but we don't know who'll pay. Somebody has to pay, as long as it's fair I don't have a problem. Whoever it is the Mail won't like it, look no further.

This 100%, some think that the taxpayer can keep paying, they are taxing everything they can and thinking up more and more things to steal more money off the hard working taxpayer. This Labour party have stunk the place out since they were elected after the Tories diabolical 14yrs.

And how will that pay for social care for all? It's a lovely idea, but we there isn't much genuine waste and the billions we send abroad is often reciprocated through trade or spent on this country anyway. I'd guess the bill for"free" social would be in the trillions. If it could be pulled off though it would be revolutionary. Personally I'd take a massive axe to the welfare bill too.
| This rumoured Death Tax on 20:05 - Jul 30 with 3734 views | Dr_Winston | It's a symptom of a Labour government that the emphasis is on gouging the taxpayers instead of cutting back spending. There are more than half a million FTE (full time equivalent) civil servants in the UK at the moment. That's 50,000 more than in 1997, and nearly 100,000 more than in 2015. The rates of people claiming disability benefits have doubled since the start of Covid. Does anyone seriously believe that twice as many people have become sick enough to claim PIP? All civil servants in every department need to be forced back to the office full time instead of allowed to skive at home for 2/3 days a week. No medical benefits should be awarded without a face to face assessment. Doing that alone would save Billions. | |

All these billions being used to clothe, feed and house these illegals, whilst we've got homeless people here and people on the breadline and that involves people who have served this country. How do you know that there isn't much waste ??? We had it here in the Senedd and we still got it, at the expense of services here that are desperate for funding any money, Plaid were given 345 million for ALN where's that money gone, where's the money for Childcare that those lot in the Senedd won't answer questions on, every time its mentioned that clueless woman Sioned loses her temper.

Until we’re actually able diagnose the severity and therefor treatment of mental health issues, even face to face appointments won’t work. We also need to look at the medicalisation of personalities. We’re on the path to everyone being neurodivergent. This does a disservice to those who really need support.

Yes to significantly increasing scrutiny over benefits. But in my current and direct experience across 9 public bodies in Wales the increase in staff numbers (to deliver infrastructure projects) seems to be paying off, the service I get is definitely better, although not perfect. Most of these also work at home, as far as I can see their work is clearly measurable and any skiving would be obvious, plus any office work would need an office and I know many have closed or merged with other organisations. There's a cost there, running in to millions. Again though it's down to priorities, we have a lot more legislation on the statute books. Every piece needs someone to work on it. IMHO a lot of it is pointless, but to some it's essential There are many other reasons too, such as Brexit and more border enforcement staff etc obviously desperately needed. One thing I have noticed is a lot of sickness, something could be done about that without a shadow of a doubt. Perhaps a scale depending on illness rather than "6 months full pay,6 months half" lots take advantage of that. There is some waste, but on the whole, the civil service is pretty efficient.

Don't disagree with that for the most part. I certainly agree with your last paragraph. In my experience the single biggest mistake has been to pay people with depression and/or other mental health issues to sit at home. Day in, day out my job involves dealing with people who have barely left their houses in years because they have been allowed to do so. That becomes a self enforcing cycle. I believe that people with serious physical and/or developmental issues should probably be given full support to live a comfortable lifestyle, but everyone else should be expected to do something. The numbers are rapidly rising and becoming unsustainable. The plaster needs to be torn off, and I doubt the current Govt will be the ones to do it.

I've got just over a year before I can officially retire and I'm seriously thinking of stopping well before then, I don't see the point with working, I've done 49yrs of physical manual skilled work, that's more than enough and its getting harder, especially these last few months and these last weeks, with family issues to contend with

Jack it in at your first opportunity. I've mostly only ever done office work, and I'm taking my occupational pension as soon as I possibly can, even with the hit for claiming it early. Another nine years as it stands. I won't be able to properly retire for probably another 13 years at least after that, but I can do something more fun at least. I can't imagine anyone doing a physical job being able to carry on until 70. They're going to have to come up with a system to manage that.

That's coming out of the foreign side budget, but yes it needs to stop. Of course a lot of it is going to the asylum hotels contract, the owners of which are tory donors. That contract has been terminated by the current government. I work directly with government bodies, they don't have the staff to discretionary work my company would pay them to do. My wife works for Swansea council, there isn't a bean to spare. One man's waste is another's necessity. Something has to give. There is no money to spend on extra public services at present. Nothing at all.

| This rumoured Death Tax on 21:37 - Jul 30 with 3619 views | jacktar | Social care is a devolved matter. The Senedd and the Welsh Government make their own laws and policies for health and social care in Wales. Westminster government reforms for England do not automatically apply across the Welsh border. Any UK-wide funding changes or tax adjustments implemented by Westminster would impact the Senedd's block grant via the Barnett formula, but Welsh ministers would decide how care is structured and delivered locally. Thank you AI. So whatever Burnham is planning may not be valid in Wales anyway. | |

Mrs having a biopsy next week and its been a nightmare trying to get our youngest into respite, the nurse and her assistant that come here twice a week to help with his needs 6hrs Tuesday and Thursday with no respite available we looked at them coming here to help and staying overnight, but it had to go to the finance team to ok it so it wasn't a given and to think we have both worked all our lives, luckily respite phoned out of the blue today saying they can take him, we didn't need all this stress on top of the worry about Mrs and Mrs certainly didn't need it, its affected my work with my jobs taking longer cause its all going around in my head. So yes finishing is ASAP is definitely being considered, part time is an option as well.

We should all give everything that we have to the government when we die so they can continue to allow the large corporations and billionaires to pay less. Because we don’t want all the billionaires to leave the uk and never come back do we like they obviously would at the drop of a hat if we dared to ask them for more of a contribution to enable us better infrastructure, health care, social care and affordable housing. I mean where WOULD we be without them??????? The answer is simple yet they have such wealth they can get the newspapers to justify their wealth and comfort over everyone else’s. And demonise the husband and wife who work all the hours but still need state help to make ends meet. Get disabled people or terminally ill people into work for peanuts. We’ve seriously lost our way as a country.
