| This rumoured Death Tax 18:45 - Jul 30 with 6658 views | max936 | What's that all about, we're just working to pay tax they're taking most of it through taxes Income Tax, NI, Taxing most of the things we buy etc. interest on savings/investments and now whatever this Death Tax is. This is Burnham who come in wanting to put more money in our pockets, he's another of these clueless lying buffoon's that we've had. Millionaires leaving the country in their droves, they know what's coming without doubt. | | | | |

Imposing it on everyone, on every death is just pure unadulterated evil. |
And imo (and I guess many other also?) 10% would be just the start with this lot in charge! [Post edited 31 Jul 11:24]

| This rumoured Death Tax on 09:25 - Jul 31 by sons_of_omri | We should all give everything that we have to the government when we die so they can continue to allow the large corporations and billionaires to pay less. Because we don’t want all the billionaires to leave the uk and never come back do we like they obviously would at the drop of a hat if we dared to ask them for more of a contribution to enable us better infrastructure, health care, social care and affordable housing. I mean where WOULD we be without them??????? The answer is simple yet they have such wealth they can get the newspapers to justify their wealth and comfort over everyone else’s. And demonise the husband and wife who work all the hours but still need state help to make ends meet. Get disabled people or terminally ill people into work for peanuts. We’ve seriously lost our way as a country. |
So true I’m buying yet another new car I aim to leave as little as possible I don’t want fund plebs having tattooed arms and pierced snouts

Imagine going through the long painful illness and decline of a parent, you have to watch them slip away. You’re grieving, in pain. You have to organise and pay for a funeral and god knows what else. Then a lovely letter drops on your doormat from HMRC demanding ten thousand pounds. A literal tax on death. It is pure tyranny.

My own family has experienced it also e.g. having to state 'gifts' given by a loved one in the seven year time span prior to death. The solicitor gives the executors a declaration form to fill in for that. Talk about Orwellian 'Big Brother' stuff when it comes to a deceased persons financial information and estate. All savings accounts/investments must be declared also, along with property(s) value that requires valuation from (that costs, and isn’t free!) two separate providers. And don’t forget to fill in that additional HRMC P1000 form folks!!! There is no point withholding information, because HRMC know everything with the banks/building societies/financial service providers having to comply with strict adherence to government rules. Yep! HRMC is in a position to get its hands on seven years of previous bank statements. Nothing is ‘private’ in this day and age!!! And there is the new HRMC connect system that sure does invade privacy like never before. A case of knowing personal/private information from UK government databases e.g. Land Registry, Companies House, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and aforementioned banks and financial institutions. Add to that data from OECD partner countries on offshore bank accounts held by British taxpayers. To make matters even more surreal there is HRMC access to social and e-commerce data e.g. Airbnb, Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Zoopla users’ transactions.

I want to put the house in trust for my eldest, thinking of looking into things with a solicitor, but if we want to downsize, I wonder as to where we stand if house is in trust.

Depends on the type of trust I believe but ordinarily you’d need the agreement of all trustees. If the trust means that the trustees own the house then if they agree, they will need to sell the house as it’s in their name and purchase another one for you to live in. You’ll need to have a lifetime interest in the property I believe. You’d need to read the trust instrument. Better still, speak to a lawyer not barrack room versions (no offence to anyone) on here, including myself!

Before any solicitor proceeds get a quote of how much it'll cost! Solicitors sure are expensive in certain circumstances. I have got my hands on some past household paperwork and under the heading 'To obtaining Grant of Probate and Administration of the estate' it says (regarding wills/probate).... QUOTE: "Based on the information provided to date we estimate that our fees will be in the region of £6,200 to £6,800 plus VAT of 20% (£7,440.00 to £8,160.00 inclusive of VAT). This is not intended to be fixed' END OF QUOTE Also be wary that solicitors charge for time spent on a process/action even if it belongs in minor/minimal time consuming category, that many would naturally assume to be free of charge.... QUOTE: "Our charges are based on the time spent dealing with the matter, This includes time spent in meetings with you and others, considering, preparing and working on documents, corresponding by email or post, and making or receiving telephone calls. END OF QUOTE

My sister had personal dealings with a 'right one' many years back, he just loved providing updates of progress via a 'solicitors letter', along with sending out other letters requesting extra information/documentation to be sent to the office..... and didn't he arf love sending these letters out, the cost soon ended up with additional costs involving hundreds of pounds. The funny thing is, it would have been better if he had asked my sister to just call into the office for a quick one-to-one chat every now and then, But of course doing things that way would take only a minute or two and cannot be exploited to make a load of easy money.

My brother did the probate for parents estate, Solicitor did the finals, but the cost wasn't excessive iirc. We had a quote off a company and the highest cost we had was over 18k plus vat, they were soon kicked into touch

That 18K plus vat estimate is no surprise, I think many (obviously not yourself) underestimate what some are prepared to charge. Another thing where people get a surprise is the way that they think that they are too insignificant and too small-fry to be of any interest of the HRMC, many think that the HRMC is only interested in the big fish of big business and Oligarch-wealth sum types etc. However the HRMC is extremely interested in Joe Bloggs and the general public.

| This rumoured Death Tax on 18:57 - Jul 30 by JJBomber | The wider question is why Burnham can do what he likes. Changes in tax policy should be discussed in Parliament and voted on. He's not acting on any manifesto promises, but doing whatever he likes. We are effectively in a dictatorship until September. |
Allegedly Burnham made his run for the finishing line to coinside with the Summer break for Parliment so no awkward questions incoming for a few weeks , nice one there . At an age myself where I must look at my earnings over 50 years in work and am concerned who will get my hard earned when I pop off . Only so much rules and regs , red tape and small print a bloke can understand and I have some advice from an FA who knows the situation , no crystal ball available . Any help or direction from the Government though , nope the silence is deafening .

You’d think so but it doesn’t work like that Most pensioners do not complain, and only vote for the party of their class ,the one they’ve always voted for Name me the last time pensioners took to the streets in their hundreds of thousands lobbying parliament and politicians Older folk are sh@t on from a great height and have been for decades The lack of respect is visceral Reform are evaporating and Labour will get back their voters Tories are finished though Badenoch is impressive

On one hand a flat tax for everyone to fund social care for all is very on brand. On the other, last year 4.72% of deaths led to inheritance tax so the most wealthy footing the bill. As the policy is supposed to be cost neutral, Labour would be saving money for the richest 5% x not very Labour. I’m not as against the inheritance tax a some on here, possibly (selfishly) is pretty unlikely I’ll end up in the top 5%. In fact, I don’t think I know anyone who has passed away and been liable.

I know two who's next of kin had to pay IHT. One elderly who had an expensive property. One divorced in his 50s who died suddenly and had a business. Both in Wales.
