Has Burnham focussed yet on the National debt? 23:07 - Aug 6 with 10566 viewsReslovenSwan1

With out doubt one of the biggest issues is national debt. It is currently hitting £3 Trillion. (A Trillion is a thousand billion.) £3,000,000,000,000. For each citizen the debt is £43,000 and growing.

The debt really kicked on after the £500 billion bankers bail out of 2009 when it was less than £1 Trillion.

The second spike was the Covid related borrowing for furlough and infrastructure etc 2020 -2021.

https://commonslibrary.parliam

I do not know what Burnham's priorities are but if it is not reducing the deficit and then debt then he is just fiddling on the roof while the house burns beneath him.

When Starmer tried to trim the budget his Chancellor was seen sobbing n the House of Commons after folding to MP pressure. He has no election for 3 years so should take unpopular decisions and cut the deficit first and then the debt.

Reform and Plaid in the Senedd is concentrating on Gender definition. If Wales went independent our share of the debt would be £150 billion. (5% of the total debt)

UK interest payment of this debt annually is £110 billion. (including my premium bond winnings)

Burnham was on the Radio 2 phone in with Jeremy Vine yesterday banging on about how he will now get the homeless off the streets .

Never ever serious questions by Vine or a chance by listeners to have a go at the PM .
Vine gave him the easiest get out of jail card ever , lets not rock the boat please .

The most scripted and pathetic bit of broadcasting I have heard ever on the airwaves .

If the beeb advised no difficult issues raised please but still broadcast it , It did sound as a pre recorded piece anyway .

Will there be an election next year to benifit from the Burnham bounce, if so will Labour win it. When I travel about there seems to be a lot of resentment in the south, particularly the South West because Burnham seems to be prioritising the North when other areas also need significant financial input. This could be a massive backfire by Labour.

Just as the Conservatives shored up their support by focussing their public spending in the South East. A lot of Boris’s levelling up money destined for the North ended up being spent in the South. Political parties have always focussed their expenditure on their supporter base and Wales. It could be easily be argued that the North is in greater need of financial investment and support.

The most deprived neighbourhood in England according to the IMD25 is to the east of the Jaywick & St Osyth area of Clacton-on-Sea in Tendring (Tendring 018a), seven of the top 10 most deprived neighbourhoods are in Blackpool. Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Hartlepool, Kingston upon Hull and Manchester are the Local Authority Districts with the highest proportions of neighbourhoods among the most deprived in England and they are all in the North. London has a few very deprived areas too including Tower Hamlets. Sadly, there’s not enough jam to spread it across the whole country so there’s going to have to be some prioritisation. There’ll always be complaining and Rome voices will be heard above others, what’s needed is a fair system.

Given Burnham has only been in power 5 minutes, I don’t think he will have made much of an impact on what’s already happened.

Don't think the South as only as the SE. There are high deprivation areas in the south, mostly seaside towns, I would say the Welsh Valleys are also in the south.

A bit of and aside but I was shocked to read that the US national debt has just passed 40 billion, having doubled in the last 10 years.

We’re quite rightly getting twitchy about our 3 trillion debt but blimey, I wonder if those in the States are worried.

Maybe our US fans can share their thoughts as it’s blown my mind a bit. Around a third of the world’s debt is carried by the USA.

Trump, Biden, Trump explains it.

Global bond rates are higher than before the financial crisis, USA debt is running at 120 percent of GDP we are heading to 100 percent. The US economy is a lot bigger so can manage a bit more debt. Paying for debt takes money away from investment expect more stagnation.

You mean TRILLIONS not billions.

UK debts is Three Trillion. Three million million. 12 zeros.

It is easier to comprehend by dividing by the overall population.

3,000,000,000,000 ÷ 60,000,000. ( UK population,).

= 300,000÷ 6. This means UK debts is £50,000 per head.

Liz Truss lasted only a few weeks or two because her policies lead to an increase in bond interest. That meant the Treasury needed to find a lot more cash. She was booted out rapidly..

I don’t disagree with you, there are high levels of deprivation in the south and the most deprived area is Clacton, but the North has more. Geographically the Welsh Valleys are in the South, but from a resourcing perspective they are in Wales and under the Senedd so I’d exclude them from any English comparisons for that reason. I wouldn’t disagree with the point you’re making about the deprivation in the valleys, some of the places I’ve visited are very deprived. The last time I was in the Upper Afan Valley it was quite bleak.

The point I was making is that deprived areas outside of Burnham's North are feeling neglected as Burnham concentrates on his North. This will seriously cost him in the next election. He is supposed to be the PM of the UK, not Manchester and the surrounding area.

We're not getting out of this mess without a massive reckoning and huge cuts in state spending, yet we've got a Government bragging about increasing foreign aid. We're literally borrowing money to give it away. It's insane.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The problem is the rich used to give the Government money via taxes back in the day, now because we have drastically cut taxes on the rich since Thatchers time, making the rich even richer the rich now invest some of that greater wealth by lending the Government money via Gilts and we effectively pay the rich interest on those Gilts by cuts in welfare services and cuts in infrastructure like schools, roads, hospitals etc.
So instead of the rich giving the Government money via taxes the Government are now giving the rich money via Gilts.

What are Gilts paying these days 5% plus in some case ?, trickle down does not work, never did work, lots of people have been hoodwinked by right wing properganda, we need socialist policies to get out of this right wing economic death spiral, we need to tax the rich like we used to and we need to tax wealth, otherwise 99% of the population will end up poor and 1% mega wealthy.

Sheer nonsense. Gordon Clown increased tax to fund an extra £3billion of expenditure. The rich just used K2 schemes to avoid paying the tax, so tax revenue decreased by £3billion. Gordon Clown had already spent the money, so we had a £6billion black hole. Raising tax has never worked, though it did get him a lot of votes, so it worked for him.
Next contestant, George Osbourne. He decided that tax havens would have a 20% withholding tax applied. What happened? The rich went to Amsterdam, where they could send the money to their tax haven free of charge. U2 and The Rolling Stones led the charge. The result was the loss of 3,000 banking jobs in the city.
Raising tax never works in a global economy. People move their money.

Thatcher cut the top rate of tax by more than half from 83% to 40% (she nearly doubled VAT from 8% to 15% which is a tax on the poor), im sure I seen it the top rate of tax was 90% in this country at one time, just like it was in the USA in the 1950s, Reagan cut their top rate of tax from 75% to about 25%, Thatcher and Reagan were a team and their policies have ruined their countries.
Brown is credited with saving the World in some quarters during the banking financial crisis in 2008, the rest of the World copied Brown to get out of the crisis.

40% of something is far better than 83% of nothing. So many higher taxation payers actually lived abroad at the time and returned when the tax was reduced that the tax revenue actually increased.

The top 1% don't pay any tax, what greatly reduced tax they are supposed to pay compared to decades ago they don't because of loopholes, the bottom 50% don't pay tax because they claim more in benefits from the system than they pay in in tax, its the rest people like me that are effectively paying for the rich (because they are not paying their fair share) and the not so well off because they get out of the system more than they put in.
The middle classes are going to be decimated and join the poor at this rate of travel, I notice a lot of the very rich are supporting Reform and a lot of the bottom 50%of earners are supporting Reform, while a lot of the educated middle classes are supporting more progressive parties Plaid, Greens etc.
