I’m not sure it’ll be taken but this is a really good opportunity for Plaid to distance themselves from Welsh Labour by making some relatively quick and cheap changes that would make rapid improvements.

As someone who currently works under the English education system, would you rather that or would rather work under the system we have in Wales implemented by the Senedd.

No it does not. Plaid Cymru have never been in power before. The poor Data was in times if Labour control. It could be their main objective was keeping the teacher unions sweet not pupil performance.

Oh yes it does. 27 years of Labour control in the Senedd has been a failure so you are pinning your hopes on a couple of months of Plaid.

Being Welsh like us is always thus
Many like me would have had Welsh speaking family squabble with other members who don’t speak Welsh
Christ
Imagine Llanelli people calling themselves jacks when O recall nothing but interest become stiff either side of Loughor bridge

These are towns 7 miles apart

Gogs look down on south Welsh as incorrect or pigeon Welsh

Many South Walians have never been to Gwynedd

Want to try Welsh in Nefyn ? Try it , real fun it is . Not

He’ll , we have Welsh people flying a flag for Argentina purely because they don’t like English football , yet we play in the English pyramid
Argentinians killed Welsh people

Confused ?

You bet

The Senedd and the Welsh football team for example unite Welsh people. You disdain for Wales means you would Abolish both gleefully.

Your personal family background is not universal. I recognise feature of the Welsh farming backwardness of the 1960s and 1970s for sure. Those times were tough. This was seen in all rural upbringings.

You went from Wales to,England at the time life got easier and the economy stronger. You equate your improved lifestyle that to moving to England.

You gave no faith in Welsh or Swansea people based on you own particular circumstances and run the whole place down continuously .

It's genuine but lacking in balance.

Welsh Labour does count as Welsh people running Welsh education. They have done a bad job. It am not an expert but one reason may be the over emphasis on keeping the view of the teaching Unions happy? This does not mean other Welsh people in the Senedd cannot generate an improvement..

The emphasis should be on student performance.. Matching England will be a tough job. The way the UK economy is structured sees the brightest and best of Wales moving to company HQs in south east England. Their motivated Offspring tend to do better. I would imagine Southeast English sats pushes up the English average

I believe in Wales and Welsh development. We have talent. You do not believe Wales and get some happiness running the place down.

Matching English results will take some doing give the brain drain of the vest and brightest Welsh Scots and Northerners to the south east of England

However standards need to go up not down. There is no excuse for standards dropping.

I was brought up in a vibrant Swansea when Wales had no senate and no compulsory Welsh and no compulsory Welsh speaking for jobs

It was a glorious proud town and one which valley people did their shopping etc

I shall be there from lunchtime tomorrow with my English wife and we will be sticking to the seafront as last time I was too upset to speak at the state of the centre

You’re right that the south east boosts English scores, in a large part down to affluence, increased funding and proportion of second generation immigrants (who oddly, perform far better in England than the rest of Europe)

Wales needs to be compared like for like with similar parts of England- the north east for example.

Performance is still poor, but it’s a better comparison contextually.

I do find it interesting that posters in the main seem not to discuss what would improve things and would rather have political and ideological points scoring.

Just one of the things on the list that the Senedd has massively failed to deliver on since 1999.

Welsh people are not inherently incapable of running things themselves, but when we're locked into a permanent, left wing situation by voters conditioned over generations to vote for failed parties then this is all we've got to look forward to.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The only thing there I’ll push back on is that actually, Plaid have made some initial sensible suggestions for change.

As I said earlier, they have an opportunity to make some quick improvements if they’re brave enough to do so.

The first and most vital thing any education system needs to accept is that some kids simply aren't academic.

There could be many reasons for that. They may be bright but find it hard to concentrate on purely intellectual matters. They may be practically minded instead of book focused. They may just be a bit thick. That's OK. Plenty of stupid people have gone on to lead rich and fulfilling lives. Some even make it into the Senedd.

We need to stop pretending that a one size fits all education system will work. Identify and move the brightest into classes, maybe even entire schools containing the best and smartest. Identify those who would benefit more from practical education. That's not necessarily the trade route. Just work out what they enjoy doing and build their education towards that.

There is going to be a massive shortage of skilled trades in this country in about 10-15 years time. We really need to start focusing on preventing it.

I don’t necessarily disagree.

The issue is at what age do you make that choice?

Eleven is probably a bit young. I'd say by the time that GCSE's are being chosen is better. Maybe 13/14. When I was a kid it was obvious by that point who was going to go down the A Level route and who would be leaving school at 16. Can't imagine that much has changed since.

I’ve got a slightly different take.

At that age I’d change the qualifications. If GCSE maths and English isn’t for you, you could take a ‘functional’ course in English and Maths that focuses on the basics, freeing up time for vocational studies.

Much of the content really isn’t need for many.

Politically it very tough though.

Ultimately both ideas acknowledge the same reality and arrive at the same destination. It's pointless forcing some kids to do most GCSE's. Like you say, cover on the basic English and Maths, but focus on stuff they might be interested in.

If for the most part you engage them in subjects/studies that they want to participate in, I'd wager that they'll be happier to accept short bursts of stuff that they're not fussed on overall.

I'd extend this past the Level 3 stage too. My stepson ended up doing a degree by default because he couldn't get an apprenticeship. There's been far too much emphasis on University Courses ahead of actual on the job training. Same basic concept that we're covering but at a higher level.

I'd be looking to radically downsize higher education in the UK. A lot of Universities need to become Polytechnics and Colleges again.

If versions of polytechnics are going to come back, the cost has to come down. Apprenticeships should and could be brilliant but they’re just so hard to come by.

My boy has just started a levels and is keen on physiotherapy. The NHS offer and apprenticeship but they’re seem to be as rare as hen’s teeth. The other option is uni and massive debt.

Exactly the same situation with my SS. He was interested in Engineering and applied for basically everything going and got nowhere.

Fortunately he lives at home and works about 16 hours a week so he's not going to be financially shafted by Uni, but at the end of it he's still going to basically be in the same place. Applying for work that he could have started doing two years ago if the opportunities were there.

Too many jobs are now looking for graduates instead of apprentices. If a portion of the cash sent out in student loans was given to employers to fund apprenticeships we'd be in a much better situation IMO.

I think there are a number of reasons for the situation we find ourselves in now.

Firstly, I think parents need to shoulder a significant proportion of the blame. A lot of parents don’t spend time doing the basics with their kids, times tables, reading, writing, homework etc etc etc. too many parents these days are only interested in what’s appearing in the social media feeds, they don’t spend time doing the basics with their kids and half the time they have no idea what’s going on. When the kids come up short, they blame the teachers. Absenteeism is an issue, If kids are succeed they need to be in school.

Budgets, these have been cut and don’t help, councils top slicing funds etc makes things worse. For a number of years I was a governor at a local school and balancing the budget was a nightmare.

Catchment area and poverty are big factors, the school I was a governor at achieved excellent academic results, the school where my wife worked was in a very poor deprived area and their results were much much lower despite the fact they had a driven and inspirational headteacher.

Governments have to take responsibility too, they’ve allowed standards to slide, budgets to shrink and councils are top slicing funding.

There are a lot of good teachers out there who are inspirational and driven, but there are also teachers out there who just don’t give a ****. Whatever people think, it’s clear that until we can recruit top talent in to teaching we are going to struggle. I saw stats yesterday about the difficulty we’re having recruiting teachers in to the sciences and maths.

My aunt was a driven old style teacher and she became head teacher of an inner city comprehensive school which was doing ok, not bad but not brilliant. Under her direction, the school improved significantly and featured amongst the top state schools in the country. She found money to pay for student teachers to come in a deliver extra lessons to the middle band pupils who wanted them during the weekends and school holidays running up to the GCSE exams. As a result, the kids who could have failed passed and the schools overall performance levels went through the roof. Underperforming teachers were identified and confronted.

I understand why Blair wanted more kids to have the opportunity to go to university, the concept was sound but like so many other things it’s not delivered what it should have. There are too many poor degrees which are worthless and costs have become prohibitive for many and a millstone around young people’s necks. I’m not saying education should be free, but it should be affordable and people should be able to continuously improve themselves.

Apprenticeships are excellent, but a lot of smaller companies no longer recruit apprentices because of the red tape and expense. My brother in law is a plumber, he won’t have an apprentice and a lot of the compiles he deals with are pulling up the drawbridge on their schemes.

Ive got 2 kids, one has a very good degree from a very good uni ( and a load of debt to boot) but he’s decided he no long wants to pursue a career in that field. He’s looking to start a new job next month which is completely unrelated to his degree, I can’t say going to Uni was a waste because I don’t know if he’d have got that job without going to uni and the skills and knowledge he acquired there. My youngest joined the NHS on an apprentice nurse scheme and is about to graduate after 7 years of part time study, they have a job, a house, a car, some cash in the bank and no debt. It’s been hard graft though, working, uni, placements, self directed study etc, but it’ll pay off.
