As a sixteen yr old , returning home from work in a shared car, the news hit us like a sledgehammer
The way the funds were used to flatten the tips was typical of Wilson’s duplicitous administration and in George Thomas a bible punching coward . A disgusting human being

My dad was an apprentice in ebbw vale steelworks at the time. He and a load of colleagues jumped in Lorry’s with a load of tools and drove around to help. Thankfully for him when they got there they were told that there was already enough people there for the rescue and he didn’t need to take part in the horrific task of digging the bodies out but did witness the devastation first hand. Think they were then employed to bring food, water and clothes to those that had been displaced. Horrific event.

Remember the day vividly.
I was 10 years of age ( going on 11) - just like so many of the unfortunate victims.
Always remembered and not to be forgotten 🙏

Wasn't that the funds that was initially raised to be given to the families of the deceased, but instead was used to flatten the remaining tips?
And then even the NCB refused to put their hands in their pockets to help?

I remember reading about protests from the Free Wales Army regarding this.

A very sad day indeed for those poor people. RIP all.

Yes, the clearest example was the £150,000 taken from the disaster fund towards removing the remaining coal tips above the village. The National Coal Board and government had refused to meet the full cost, leaving the community’s charitable donations to cover part of it.

There was lots more going on too greedy thieving bastards.

It was collected for families affected directly and not for any restoration work
The initial amount was reduced by the govt, Labour one, but they still had to contribute to levelling
It ended up at 150k , 2 million today in value
Tips were cleared between 68 and 70
In 1997 the 150 k was returned
Thirty years later

Took queen eight days to visit

Biggest scandal in South Wales in my lifetime

As a young boy I remember my dad travelling up with mates to help but like JoN the response by so many to help meant he returned home without helping .If anyone has a chance and this isn't meant to be morbid but pay a visit to the cemetery, to see the white rows of white arches brought home how cruel life can be .Back in the 80's we were working for a few months the hill above the village and the area still clearly bore the scars .If there was anything good to come from this was that it took this disaster to make the Goverment implement the Health & Safety at Work act ironically with Robens the chief instigator.

Ron Davies for those who remember him 🫪 ensured the money was repaid in 1997. Those that needed it were in the majority dead by then. The charities commission were equally as bad withholding payments to families whilst THEY decided how close the parents were to their children.

I could go on. Disgusting tactics.

That was a Labour govt. Harold Wilson.

Heart breaking, passed the memorial ground a few years ago had a job on the street directly below, spoke the customer she suggested that I go there after I finished her job, I couldn't go though, I sometimes wish that I had, my Mrs said at the time that I should have gone.

The cemetery is down on the left when you drive along the main road on isn't it was on my left, I passed it before turning right to go to the job I was going to, turned right and then left and as I drove down the street there was and still is no doubt a memorial area up a hill to my right, I saw part of that.

July 1966 and on a family holiday to Jersey , Dan Dare flights trom Swansea Airport direct .

Sitting on the beach and holidaymakers with transistor radios clapping and cheering as England won the World Cup that day , I never got that fun but still a memory .

Fast forward to October and my old man was so visibly upset we as a family drove up to Aberfan a few days later , all went a bit why am I here moment , he was so angry at it all .

Still remember his reaction to that sight of carnage and my whatever moment .

When I see the tributes my dads glare at me still will live with me forever .

I will take a trip up to the tributes soon , to my shame I have not so far .

Even to keep the memory of my old mans memories of that day .

I watched the documentary on iPlayer last night and it brought the anger back.

Just before my time but it cast a long shadow over South Wales and we were very aware of it growing up. My gramps was just coming up to retirement but still a working miner, as was my uncle at Tower and they together with my Dad were straight over there in his car and digging. He never really discussed it apart from one thing - a young Salvation Army girl still of school age herself in the middle of the night stood knee deep in freezing slurry handing out mugs of tea to those digging. He said the Sally Army were marvellous providing help and comfort at Aberfan and would always give to them if they were collecting and I do the same now on his behalf.

I'm ashamed to say that this year was the first time I visited The Garden of Remembrance and the Cemetery.
We left earlier when travelling down for the Burnley game and spent an hour there.
To see so many names, some from the same family is heartbreaking.
I've heard the words seen the films but to walk along and see the ages 7,8,9 does bring a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye
On IPlayer there are programmes one on BBC2 and one on S4C (subtitles available)
Both excellent in differing ways and a very difficult watch
Just to add both locations were immaculate and peaceful.

I knew a fair bit but the BBC2 programme Aberfan: The Village That Fought Back
triggered back the memory, and it was, and still is, disgusting how they were treated for years. Even now, watching it I became more and more angry

The S4C Alex Jones: Un diwrnod yn Aberfan highlights the more personal aspect of the day and long term affects

We spent a few months there on a daily basis working on a line which runs at right angles to the slope directly above the village so we had a daily reminder of the events ,there was a guy who walked up the hill every day to check that the culverts built after were clear and water flowing , even in the summer the flow could be fierce so I can only imagine the force that was there preceding the disaster..

Me too still living in the south west where it was big news as well. Although I don’t recall the actual moment I still get chills thinking about it. My mother used to tell me I cried when I heard.
