An old trick is to float something extremely disagreeable then to withdraw that for something slightly less disagreeable and the people think that at least it isn’t as bad as it might have been.

Take your pick, because one way or the other they have to replace the £40Billion lost revenue some how. [Post edited 16 Nov 2020 16:32]

There is already VAT of 5% on electricity. It was imposed by the EU.

The claim: Vote Leave says the UK cannot lower VAT rates as long as it is in the European Union. Michael Gove said the 5% rate of VAT on household gas and electricity bills could not be scrapped because of EU rules. Reality Check verdict: EU rules mean the UK cannot reduce VAT on goods and services below 15%, the standard rate of VAT in the EU. The standard rate of VAT in the UK is 20%, so the government could reduce it by up to 5% today if it wanted. Domestic fuel is on a special list of pre-approved goods and services that are subject to lower VAT rates and it would require the agreement of all other EU members to reduce it further.

BTW if you don’t like it on here and insist on disrupting conversations why don’t you stay off here, this website has improved immensely, and any other website I read except scfc2 which is also carefully run seems to be no different to what this was before. Ok, kettle pot black in my case, but at least I’ve got the gonads to support the site owner and recognise what he is trying to achieve. So leave it out or move along. I know a Keith has asked you to quit abusing people, so why don’t you do so or try being an adult.

Great post . It's nor easy for me to adapt to not winding up people for fun or to antagonise those I consider egotists. It was a dumb idea and I wasted too much time on PS. This site,no matter what conversation Sumbler had with Keith is different as it endevours to stick to reasonable exchange of view. Not always ,true, but it is a world away from what this site used to be where wholescale abuse was not only allowed but encouraged by the mods . It's taken years for us to realise this is futile . Ebo's posts are pretty damning .

Could start by making sure that all large companies pay the tax that they should. Also, close loopholes to tax avaoidance (note careful use of term!). Ree-Mogg's companies are a perfect example of this.

It shouldn’t be so difficult for him to put his point across in a civil manner, rather than just calling everyone an effing C all the time. He’d be welcome with open arms along with everyone else.

Thanks for confirming that the 5% vat on domestic electricity and gas was imposed on the UK by the EU.

I don't know that they can't see it; it's just that whoever we vote in, the government wins! Whichever party is in power they nearly always do something they promised not to do. Conversely, they always say they can't do something they had promised to do. Politicians have much in common whether they are red or blue or anywhere in between.

Which is why a certain non politician President who cannot be named is so popular with his people, because he has or has tried to do everything he said he would. Which is very refreshing.
