Furious.
I’ve annihilated him today.

My dog has lost five kilos.

After

Before

I’m absolutely traumatised.

Filthy, hiding in the house and back where he was when we rescued him.

I saw on the tv this morning, a woman whose dog got injured in a kennel and they did nothing. She arrived home 2 days later, took the dog to her vet but the poor animal had to be put to sleep. The vet told her if he'd been seen straight away he could have been saved.

If someone did that to my boy I'd end up in a cell.

My son is now traumatised after I told him no more foreign holidays until our Albie has departed because he's 13 next month and I refuse to put him in a kennel now. if we go somewhere it's a dog friendly UK holiday.

When you say annihilated...not literally surely

That's one the risks of putting them in kennels unfortunately. You have to weigh these things up when considering going on holiday etc.

Even when you know, you never know?

We had a similiar situation 30 years ago with our GSD.

Now, with a pup,we would be very reluctant to hove her into any kennel.

We love em but they are a bind.

We got a lady to have ours in her house when we go away it's about the same cost but he's not in a cage all day

You've done the right thing there Jim. A familiar face helps them cope with their owners absence I bet.

We would not put our dog in kennels, we used to travel the World (Western World not third World) and stopped going as soon as we rescued our dog, I can only remember two one nighters away in 10 years and a family member stayed with the dog in our house on those one off one night occasions, I won a night in a 5 star Chelsea hotel for the Heineken cup final and won a night in a 4 star hotel in Manchester for the rugby league final, I wanted the cash prize and signed shirts (worth a few Bob) so had to accept the prizes as was.

Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

Yeah, our next door neighbours are going away next week and we're having their dog. He can sleep in his bed at home overnight but then we open the doors and gate and he can come and go.

The only draw back is you have to book well in advance say 12 months we still haven't been away since before the pandemic and looking like we won't this year unless she gets a cancellation

And the other thing is she's not registered with any body of some kind but she's chock a block 52 weeks a year and it's cash only on pick up but it's all recommendations from others and first time we booked we booked for 8 days and turned up a day early there was the boy lying on settee 🤣
So we knew he was being looked after properly

Same with mine & my last dog.

Tried both in a kennels once & was told they are more suited to a dog sitter.

Probably because they are spoilt.

We've always found Kenwood kennels in Llanrhidian to be very good, our 2 spaniels have been there a number of times.

Dog sitters are an option, they cost less than kennels and will also look after your house, most of these seem to be retired people who come properly screened, checked and referenced through an agency.

My dog goes to the dog sitters house.

You get to meet them in advance and can choose, it's handy if you have other pets and responsibilities ; we look out for our elderly neighbour who has no family, the dog sitter is happy to help him if needed and we use the same sitter all the time, she's become a friend.

Agreed. Sent my cat there when I was young and we were off to Italy. When we got back he was massive

If I was asked if putting my dog in kennels is in their best interests I’d say no, doesn’t matter how good he kennels are it’s traumatic and upsetting for dogs, it affects some much worse than others but I’d never even entertain the idea
Would you allow a stranger to look after your children? I do t mean to come across as unsympathetic but I don’t understand why people do it

Our 2 Cavs are twins & I can definitely say that they haven't been traumatised by a stay in Kenwood.

It's all pretty much been said but one thing dogs can suffer with badly and lose weight with is separation anxiety that's why it's always best to keep them with people they know and or places they know. We got 3 dogs 1 of them would love to stay in a kennel and bark all day long and annoy the other dogs in there, the other two they would sh1t a brick

I love most animals particularly dogs. The dog we have had for the last 18 months is treated like a family member. Can’t understand why someone would hurt a dog.

Keith, on a less serious note so forgive me (with your dogs on the road to recovery) - the title of the thread would make a great blues opening line mate
