Page close to tears as he responds to the support he has within the Wales squad 14th Oct 2023 18:43
Wales head coach Rob Page responded emotionally to reports of Roy Keane being a target replacement for him last month. By all accounts the FAW considered Roy Keane after the home defeat to Armenia. 0

No doubt a few players would have been gutted to see Russy leave. Didn't prevent him from being a Winstons wish useless Swans manager.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Ben D said this.

"We’re very supportive of the manager and we’re a very tight-knit group, and that’s why we’ve had the success that we’ve had. That’s why we’re all behind him. We stick together in the good times and the tough times. The manager creates a good, professional and enjoyable environment, we’ve got a manager who backs us and deserves our support now. We just need to concentrate on a big game tomorrow.”

I am looking for the bit where he says "Mr Page is a fantastic modern coach with great ideas and a superb training regime". He must have forgot to say this or perhaps it is not true.

He is just reiterating what we all know. Under Page Wales is a boys club where players are persisted with long after their sell by date.

That’s clearly something you’ve made up. If you’re referring to Bale and Ramsey then it was right that were included in the World Cup games. It’s easy to be wise with hindsight but they weren’t as effective as they once were.

The current squad is packed with young players. James at 19 in the midfield and up against some world class players was immense.

Page isn’t a tactical genius but he has helped recreate the good spirit within the camp that Wales had under Coleman. They are similar in many ways actually and we didn’t do too badly in 2016 albeit with a world class Bale in his prime then.

I'm referring to Gunter and Williams, the last WC it would have been far better to take a couple of youngsters for experience.

They were reliable, consistent and popular players who could do a job if/ when required. As for Page he’s dealing with a transitional phase in Welsh football and overall doing a decent job.

It’s east to bash someone without looking at the wider picture. Football fans are quick to condemn someone and then two games later completely change their minds. 😂

We can agree to differ on the players. Up until last night he was not doing a decent job, last night was good. Let's wait and see if it was Page or the players who digged us out of the hole. Possibly both time will tell, at a minimum it has given him time.

But he has been doing a decent job. Don’t forget we don’t have that many top professional players to choose from. There’s a reason it was 60 plus years between World Cup final qualification. You can’t go and and pay £50 m to sign a player. In transition we are holding our own and that’s commendable and beating Croatia last night was an outstanding result albeit their game plan was questionable .

You have a point.
When we had a decent selection of quality players in the 80s ,we still somehow buggered it up.
I don’t think the quality Nieves good.
Look at the goalkeeper position for a start .

Wales have been seriously underperforming losing convincingly to a team FIFA ranked 92 in a vital game.

Players like Wilson James and Brooks were sloppy and not focussed properly. Numerous misplaced passes lackadaisical passive play. The s team were sliding back a few decades when playing for Wales was a chance for some beers with your old u16 mates.

The same players were unrecognisable from that game and the game in Samsun. On it from the gun. Where has this been Mr Page? Page has a £50m player and he has done nothing for Wales.

You seem to be falling in to the trap of making things up to suit an agenda

It’s Wales we are talking about, not Brazil or Argentina. A Welsh side that has to field players from the Championship , League One and even League Two and a goalkeeper with little experience of starting league games at his various clubs. Despite all of that we are punching above our weight and now qualifying for major tournaments and ranked around 30 in the FIFA rankings consequently.

It was a poor performance of course against Armenia. Too many players had an off day and when that happens you have problems.

Typical of herd behaviour you are suggesting I "make things up". The Chief stated this theme and I reject it. I "speculate" on the information I have and the evidence of my own eyes.

Against both Armenian ranked 92 and Turkiye away Wales played no football. Slow mechanical and passive. When the manager is put under pressure he and his team deliver. The name "Keane" leaked by a FAW mole seems to have got the player on their game.

Mooney (the boss) gave Page a boot up the backside. Guess what? It works. I have had few and got on with it. It works in the engineering businesses and also in football. It does not work when you have people like Sancho for example who do not respect his bosses.

Some welsh players fold when the pressure is on. Moore lost discipline and got sent off. Morrell got caught dawdling v Armenia ad was too slow v Turkiye and got sent off.

I watched in despair as hot Swansea u19 prospects let their country down. Margetson give a goal away in a reckless fashion and Ben Lloyd literally "give up" on a challenge fouled his opponent then petulantly kick the ball away. He was then immediately hauled off. I hope the Swansea academy people review this. They have a lot to learn. Lessons are learned away in Montenegro when 0-3 down not 4-0 up v Crewe at the Liberty.

Page should not break ranks and show the one team one vision approach. Too many players know they are auto picks and think they can take liberties. Mooney's intervention was actually "helpful". No Cymru teams a can coast to wins. All have to graft to the end. Young Lloyd needs to learn this.

When you had a kick up the back side was it to be told ;

No it was to work harder concentrate show more energy and work the full day as daylight allowed. This can be compared to football.

Harry Wilson is a case in point. He is prone to phases of highly inaccurate passing and trying hopeful flicks with very little chance of success.

He is a highly talented performer but rarely delivers in a Welsh shirt. The Championship where he excelled is well above the Armenian league. Wales out worked Croatia and could not match them for passing accuracy and possession. The Welsh way is running hard and the Croatians (ageing) struggled. James, Wilson, Brooks Johnson run all day so do Roberts and Neco. Laboured passing is not their thing,

Wales are never going to outpass most European teams. Like me on the railways results came by moving more quickly and grafting the full time allowance.

I agree with you, the tournaments took place prior to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the break up of the old eastern block so there were less teams competing to qualify and only the group winners went through to the finals.

The Euro Championships in 1980 - there were 2 groups of 4 teams, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Greece, England, Italy, Belgium and Spain.

The Euro’s in 1984 -which was for many years regarded as one of the best tournaments also had 8 teams, France, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, West Germany, Yugoslavia, Romania and Spain.

The 1988 tournament was another 8 team event with West Germany, Netherlands, Soviet Union, England, Spain, Italy, Denmark and the Republic of Ireland competing. The ROI under Jack Charlton famously beat England 1-0 and the latter went out without picking up a point.
