I’m not keen on Reeves, but it looks like she’s in the clear on this and that the letting agent may well be responsible.

Boris Johnson’s offence was very minor in the grand scheme of things, having cheese and wine in a garden isn’t exactly the crime of the century under normal circumstances but he broke trust and had to go. You can’t compare Boris’s flagrant disregard and breaking of the law with Reeves. It’s clear from the chain of emails the Letting Agent was instructed to and supposed to sort the licence out. The Letting Agent has apologised for their error in not applying for the licence.
If these facts are correct I don’t believe Reeves has a case to answer, if on the other hand she and her husband hadn’t asked the Letting Agent to sort it and the Letting Agent hadn’t said they were sorting it that would be a different story. I’m not defending Reeves but the idea that they are comparable is a bit nuts to me.
It’s like saying all criminals are the same. I got a speeding ticket once. Does that make me a criminal like Harold Shipman?

I personally don't believe that this in itself warrants resignation, but there seem to me to be two unresolved issues.
The first is that RR changed her story, at first saying that she was unaware of the requirement for a license (reportedly what she first told Starmer) but later saying that she knew this was needed and instructed the letting agent to make the arrangement (the current version of what happened).
Secondly, if the latter applies why did RR or her husband not notice that the fee of £900 had not been taken from the relevant bank account?
As I say, I don't expect a resignation over this omission (we'd all suffer from the reaction of the bond market), but it makes RR look either shifty (saying anything to sidestep a problem) or lacking capacity for detail. | | | |

It shows a shocking level of incompetence. They’re running these incredible offices of state. There’s only so far “I’m sorry I made a mistake” can go. Especially when they are perceived to have made a financial gain from it. Trust in politics is at an all time low and these cretins are making these silly “mistakes” almost on a weekly basis.
It can’t go on like this. If she’s making these rudimentary mistakes in her private affairs how can we trust her to run the economy? We even saw her bawling her eyes out on the front bench. The job is far too big for her. | |
