The University's can... thats the main point of these. Free publicity, and also is great when they are trying to manage donations for their schools. Why is it that companies give Celebrities free things?

Yep, it's essentially free marketing & publicity. Good for attracting students, building links with certain industries, etc. Good old you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours stuff.

I cant see many 17/18 year olds wanting to come to Swansea on the back of Huw and Chris gaining these degrees?

Especially as they are both as thick as pigshit. They should have to at least prove their IQ is over 20 Maybe a sats maths test for ten year olds, which would pretty much rule out Cookie. Then again, maybe Jenkins did an essay on how to destroy a building firm. And a football club.

I'm assuming you know more about this than most. Is there a financial reward (or any other incentive) for the recipient when they receive the "degree"?

I thought this was about honorary degrees which obviously are worthless.

Indeed, almost by definition. If a degree is for X years academic study it should only be awarded or X years successful academic study. Not given away to brainless divs because they can kick a ball or get lucky in a job they are well paid for. Keep all honours for real services to humanity, preferably selfless ones, and not an unearned addition for being 'successful' in something else. Or for genuine bravery.

That makes the assumption that the processes that are learned in any degree are not worthwhile. The requirements for a Batchelor's degreee should provide skills needed for work or more advanced study. It is a mistake to consider a degree as just learning a subject, though it is frequently and increasingly seen as such. In many ways it is the journey not the destination that is important. That said the exemplars you have listed are less useful to society, the economy or industry than many subjects and we would be better training engineers for instance. There are too many mediocre degrees at mediocre universities for mediocre students in things like media studies where an apprenticeship with part time degree level study would meet their and societies needs better. That is not to say it is not worthwhile but other routes may be better.

Not usually. At Liverpool each subject area nominates people as do the senior management that the Council (roughly equivalent to governors) approve. We seem to get four main 'types' of honorary doctorates Graduates of the university who have gone on to success -I think the newsreader Jon Snow got one in December for example. people from the area or have contibuted to local life- ranging from Elvis Costello to Bishop John James who chaired the Hillsborough independent panel Benefactors like Lord Derby or the Duke of Westminster People recognized for outstanding contributions to an area- the one that sticks out for me is Alec Jeffries who developed DNA fingerprinting Welsh Universities always seem keen to give them to sports people. Personally I am after a DSc rather than an honorary
Chris Coleman - Honourary degree on 21:13 - Jan 11 with 1198 views | pikeypaul | Coleman was a remedial in Bishop Vaughan school, the type that were given a lump of clay and told to play with it until the end of class. Degree? You have to laugh. Who put the axe to the end of Jenkins nose? It looks like he has a arse on his face.

Really? Education can open more possibilities than anything. Taken me more places, met more interesting people and done more things than I imagined as a child. Achieved through education and hard work.

This simply would not work for clinical areas or engineering for example. There are areas in which it may and for a substantial proportion of people it may be better. For the brightest umiversity is still a good option if you want to go into research for example
