Education Minister Kirsty Williams — Response to Coronavirus ... 01:12 - Mar 20 with 866 viewstheloneranger

"Kirsty Williams (KW) confirms that schools will have a ‘new purpose’ to help support those most in need, including those involved in the immediate response to the outbreak.

She says the supporting and safeguarding of the vulnerable and ensuring a continuity of learning for pupils who benefit from free school meals (FSM) and children with additional learning needs (ALN) is a key area of interest.

Says work is ‘already underway’ with local authorities and individual schools on what the new provision will look like for launch on Monday."

Yep, I hadn't realised how schools were going to be 'repurposed' to support essential workers and those kids who have home welfare concerns. A good thing, and we should all be thankful to the teachers who'll keep turning out.

The problem is really that virtually all workers are in jobs that support others who are deemed to be doing vital work or who are doing vital work. Otherwise their jobs probably wouldn't exist anyway.

If you start thinking about people who are in jobs that aren't on the face of it at the coalface but are essential to keep those that are able to carry out their jobs then you will be faced by a never ending list basically.

Very much like the armed forces, the numbers of frontline soldiers, sailors or Air Force personnel are dwarfed many times by those in logistical posts which enable the frontline troops to carry out their roles.

The list of workers whose kids are still going to be going to school is so long that there is hardly any point in excluding the handful who won't be going to school.

That's what I was thinking, may as well just keep the schools open and let kids actually learn things. Maybe teach them how to properly deal with a pandemic.

I mentioned this in the other teachers thread on here - my wife’s school for example are already planning to be in over Easter and through to and including the Summer holidays if needs be and keeping school open for all who will need to use it (key workers children/ children that need a hot meal/ children at social service risk etc), so there’s a clear realisation amongst teachers that the traditional role of schools may during this time change. They are going to be a key factor in keeping our economy going best it can in part.

Oh,..Dave, what's occuring?

In our area the local school is recruiting retired and other qualified staff to support children, another school has in the space of a week moved all teaching onto Teams and is training all staff and pupils using a local business consultancy.

This is classic change behaviour some schools are stuck with the changes required, others are straight into action creating a new normal.

What is the point of closing down schools if the little bastards are just going to be running around in the shops and streets?

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.
