Jumpin Geriatrics was a loss, but that horrible Weavers building survived far too long imo.

If it had been a stable and secure structure it could have been turned into apartments. I think that fetish kicked off in the 80’s though after Weavers was demolished

Remarkably survived the Luftwaffe but not the "corporation"

Don’t want to hijack the thread but what is happening to The Potter’s Wheel. The whole building looks like it’s due for demolition. Anyone know?

2 buildings of some historical importance have been demolished in my time.

Aforementioned Weavers flour mill was the first steel-reinforced concrete structure put up in Wales. When it was derelict in the early 80s I occasionally used to take the highly dangerous ascent up to the top floor, eat a banana, enjoy the view and smoke a roll-up. The stairways were rubble-strewn and lacked hand-rails, the pipework ripped from the walls, graffiti everywhere, gaping holes in the floor. Top place.

The other place was Siemens Laboratory, a small red-brick building directly under Landore viaduct. The open-hearth process for the smelting of metal ores was perfected in this building, and I've no doubt that if it was still standing, it would be a tourist attraction, with parties of schoolchildren etc.

Apart from any historical significance, these two buildings, along with many others, gave Swansea a particular atmosphere and character (and a crucial link with it's industrial past) which can never be replaced. The bland "anywhere-ness" of the Enterprise Park, and the SA1 development are no substitute.

When it comes to historical/landmark buildings, the Council has, over the years, thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

Effing criminal.

I recall there was much debate at the time over the Weaver building.

Many didn't want to see it demolished. It was seen as an iconic and unique structure at the gateway to Swansea.

As a kid I never quite understood how, with its overhang, it didn't fall down

People laughed at me at the time but the iconic Vetch floodlight should never have been melted down for scrap.
It should have been removed and placed at the Liberty or even somewhere else in the city.

"It was seen as an iconic and unique structure at the gateway to Swansea."

That's exactly what it was - in my eyes anyway.

Now what have we got instead?

An iconic and unique Sainsburys?

I think not.

Marthas. Good times.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

I believe it was taken into storage and then vanished into thin air.
