Freddie Woodman take note, particularly where Rog ends with "There’s nothing wrong with taking a knock or two, but there’s a big difference between that and being afraid to take one."

Hence my comments on another thread. The lad we have now, sorry to ay it,is a coward in that he avoids contact -any contact, where he might be even slightly hurt. Ideally,he is the first one we should have replaced as I cnnot see how defenders in front of him can feel remotely reassured as this fella will syte out of a one on one ,as he did on Tuesday. Simply appalling.
RF was a real soldier and one willing to take one for the team,as was the case of Jennings,Wilson,Lawrence,Bonetti,Sprake, Kelsey-not all massive but all real team men who could tand up for themselves and the team.
Frankly,Woodman makes me feel ill.
And maybe he should learn how to kick a ball without first taking time to catch his breath. Ive yet to see a worse distributor of a ball.
One of the things I notice , having played in goal,,,,,,,,,hum years ago, modern keepers don't often dive at the feet of players now, more going in with their feet,

Pickford as an example.
A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
In an age when keepers are very protected too. I've seen keepers get free kicks when it was their own player that took them out, all they have to do is call for a foul and refs seems to be on automatic.

You dive in at a players feet these days they’ll just throw themselves down for a VAR penalty. They pretty much have no choice but to stand up.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

If there’s any contact at all they’ll give it. It’s this whole “he was entitled to go down” nonsense.
"But I felt contact ref" and the ex pro's on MOTD back it up. It's a nonsense. It should be you try to stay on your feet and score. Players go down far too easy and yet at the Scouse derby Van Dijk got ruined in plain view of the ref and got nothing. It's bizarre.
I was trying to find a Picture of a former Crewe keeper, who I stood behind under the double decker, smallest keeper I can remember, I thought we were in for a shed full of goals against him, but he was outstanding, he was diving about all over the place stopping shots etc,,,,we lot 1-0, willie Mailey
Found a later one with a Swans connection...
What I did find for us old beggars on here is that Facebook has a Football league review mag page , if you old feckers remember that, plenty of pics from that era on there, found it just in time for the next 2 weeks lock in

Such at a different game to when Roger played, can you imagine the players of his generation doing the Futsal type stances and postures, when coming out 1 v 1?
Schmeichel used to come out and just be as huge as he could be, and flap those huge arms in a circular motion, must have been terrifying for a striker, in the moment.
Not forgetting when Harold Schumacher almost decapitated that French boy.

It's why get upset with what we have thee days. I doubt Roger made himself that much out of the game but he was honest and brave as well as being a good shot stopper. He would take a hit if it meant saving a goal.Woodman actually cowers away, visably. It is shocking to see and any team of size is going to try to intimidate him. This is why I see Bennett as key .Much depend on him and Steve needs to see this and make him captain NOW.
Best keeper Ive seen in the flesh . True bully, gobshite, villain, ruthless and brillian t,Peter Schmeichel
