As to why on a match day these two players would be doing extra rounds is open to speculation. However, what we do know is the rest of the squad selected for today were not with them bar a few of the usual treatment issues pre match. 1 Another conundrum, Obafemi and Whittaker again, click above. Very strange, I can understand extra training in the week. Was it a last fitness test before picking the squad for today? I doubt it. Something far from right, is he now into humiliation as a last resort?

Definitely down to attitude and behaviour for me, they both seem disinterested.

Not good news that. Loan moves in January for both I’m assuming but who replaces them I wonder.

The lad at Leeds is on the horizon but I’m pretty certain he isn’t as good as Obafemi.

In fairness if Liam Cullen was getting opportunities ahead of me in the team I'd be pissed off too.

. I see what you're saying re 'seem disinterested'. However, for me players like Oba need space, some headroom to grow, to express themselves. And then kick on. Martin needs to give him that space, right now. I read something recently about Oba looking up to Bony as a potential role model. Some of the parallels are obvious, the languid seeming disinterested laid back persona. Stuff to slag him off with. Yet the key is the explosive finish. Oba has the potential to usurp the big man, with his explosiveness. I also read how Oba loves the Swans Bony/Oba song and how much he loves and appreciates the chant: 'Cmon Obafemi, score some goals for Swansea' . If I was Martin, esp right now when we need that explosive spark in the final third after losing to a team in the bottom echelons, Oba is a must on the starting teamsheet. . .

RM has stated that Liam trains far better than those two. I've played with and coached some players with so much talent but couldn't be bothered to train hard because they knew their place was guaranteed, perhaps RM is picking them to show them that no matter how much talent you have don't just think that your place is guaranteed.

Just because a player trains well doesn't mean they're the right choice on matchday. Fulton has been one of the best in training for years according to many players. Dan James was (relatively) awful. British managers tend to be very focused on training session performances as the audition for the weekend game. When you're in the second tier sometimes you have to make a choice between the ones who work the hardest and the ones who have the most talent. Martin himself said the other day he was worried he'd trained the group too hard, to the detriment of our performance. "Just work harder, mun" isn't the secret to football.

He needs to knuckle down, he isn’t any different to anyone else, it seems he is using up his chances. Definitely a challenge to Martin’s management ability.

On the flip side of that he's demonstrating that running around in training is valued as highly as talent.

Which RM has indicated on numerous occasions, despite what people think about that tact, it’s a fact.

Spot on. Exactly, there's clearly a disconnect in Martin's judgement right now. The art of managing is recognising What Works Best for the current dynamic. Cooper had that in spades. Martin, despite his obvious talents, massively needs to work on this for our final third set-up, dynamic and selection. For me - it's time for Martin to take an educated punt on the explosive Oba. Downes should be the obvious casualty, as per. Oba for Downes is so very very obvious. . .

Of course he is, if he's to lazy to apply himself in training then there's no chance of him being involved in the 1st team squad, he's a massive disappointment and sadly a waste of the fee we paid for him, he's happy though has he's made himself more than a few quid, but it could have been so much more, he has the attributes to be a real talent, but unless he's prepared to apply himself he's pissing into the wind. Someone needs to get hold of him and shake him into reality and he just might turn the corner.

This is the crux of it. From what I glean, Martin is so up to the task, and the likes of Oba recognise and appreciate this. And as such the time is right for what Oba needs - a true and proper balls out run out, WITH the backing and utter consent of the manager. Any CF worth his salt would relish that opportunity, and any proper top-level manager worth his salt will recognise this need, right now. . .

But surely if his attitude isn't good enough in training then he doesn't deserve the chance to showcase the skills that we know he does possess.

It's not about whether he "deserves the chance" to play, or show off in front of a crowd. Swansea City is a football club trying to win matches with the assets at its disposal, not a charity out to reward good lads who work hard. imo Obafemi's issue isn't that he's a poor worker, it's that he's a mediocre and injury prone talent in the first place. Whittaker a different case as he's shown he can be a threat at this level (when played in his position up front). Overlooking a lad who scores goals on a Saturday because he doesn't make enough sprints on a Thursday is missing the forest for the trees: prizing the method over the result.

So the manager should reward oba for not turning up on time and not putting effort in like everyone else? How do you think that would go down the those players who do?

I think Jasper was stating Whittakers case....it is a mystery to me as to why he hasn't had opportunity up front......yes he has had a couple of cameos of late but at eong back and even on the left when he is right footed.
