Reasons to be cheerful - Part 1. 21:47 - Dec 29 with 1138 viewsReslovenSwan1

Swansea fans are rightly upset at the defeat at Reading but is it all doom and groom?

a) Martin's whole career has been in mid table with no hint of relegation woes
b) Martin's career has witnessed patchy runs of good and bad form of equal length,
c) Martin teams have seen big wallopings and big wins equally.
d) Possession stats and other key indicators are starting to align proportionally.
e) Very good team control possession and dominate corners, shots on and off target.
f) Piroe was outstanding last season with an outrageous xG.
g) Piroe has two assists for Cullen goals and is bound to score soon.
h) Swansea can get a fee for Obafemi, Pato, Manning and Lati of some description.
i) Martin has identified deficits in his own game. Players need to know there are direct consequences for the slackness shown recently by Benda and Latibeaudire (in the first 20 secs v Norwich) .
j) A new approach is overdue allied to a new captain.
k) The Page Welsh national team represented a poor possession passing game nobody wants to see back at Swansea. It was dire.
l) Darling, Wood, and Cabango have been thrown in the deep end given a long run of games. In their early twenties they must be learning fast.
m) There is some money for new players in January
n) Progress in minute in points per game 1.33 against 1.32 last season but it is minor progress
o) The team is young.
p) Whittaker is doing well on loan. Joseph was performing before injuring and Garrick still has time to perform if he has it in him.
q) The owners have patience in Martin and he will still be at Swansea in the Summer hopefully able to show some progress.
r) Martin's signing have not been as bad as some might suggest. There is good leader in Darling, Fisher is what the club paid for and Downes was a diamond.
s) There is a massive scope for improvement in the selection of loan players. Teenagers are no better than those already at the club.
t) Martin might have hit another fork in the road with a new mentality. He miust be learning what does and does not work in this division.
u) As a Goldilocks manger he will not be poached.
v) Congreve, Lloyd, Abdullah, Cotterill, Webb and McFadyan may see first team action.
x) I sense the club will not really challenge seriously until these prospects are up and running.
y) The prospects need a stable playing style to develop into.
z) Swansea fans are patient and few want a sugar daddy to come in. Growth by development.

👍👏👏👏👏👏👏 Good thread.
Piroe’s two assists off the post, how similar were those Cullen goals at Coventry and Reading.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Excellent post.

Unfortunately Resolven often says a lot, but not a lot of it is accurate. The research and knowledge that goes into his posts is severely lacking, usually culminating in a load of inaccurate feelings being presented as facts.

1) Martins career has not seen good and bad form of equal length. This season we have only had a run of 4 without defeat, however we have also had 8 without a win (and increasing every game we fail to win). Our bad runs are twice as long as our favourable ones.

Last season we saw 6 without a win, and again only 3 without a loss meaning our bad run was twice as long as our good run.

2) Martins teams have not seen walloping and wins equally.

We have won 4 games by 3 goals or more, yet lost 8 by 3 goals or more under his tenure. Our hammerings are again double those of what we hand out.

3) Possession stats and other key indicators are not starting to align proportionally.

Only 4 times this season have out shots on target been the same or higher proportion as our possession proportion dictates. That means 84% of the time, we are under performing in the main key metric.

4) You cannot dominate shots off target and corners. They aren’t domineering traits. You can lose 5-0 quite comfortably and have more corners or shots off target.

5) Martin has not identified weaknesses in his game. He is making the same mistakes he was making 12 months ago and complaining about the same things, even though he’s done nothing to change them.

6) Having a possession game doesn’t mean it’s a good game. You can have 100% of the ball and never win a match if you sit on it. Nobody wants to pay to watch that.

7) The team being young is a fallacy. A bit like calling Rooney inexperienced when he was 21 despite playing as many games as many 25 year olds.

Cabango is a fully fledged international who has been to a World Cup and a European Championships with over 100 professional appearances. Harry Darling has around 120 professional appearances under his belt - these aren’t kids in football terms.

I got bored of reading after that. It looked like he was just filling blank space for his OCD A-Z schtick.

Point 2 makes not a lot of sense to me.

In the interests of language the last sentence is grammatically incorrect, ‘bored of reading’ It should be ‘bored when reading’ or even ‘bored with reading’ but ‘bored of reading’ is inaccurate and a point of order.

OK I've changed it.

It’s a perfectly acceptable use of the language.

Point 2 states that Martin has lost games by 3 goals or more twice as much as he has won games by 3 goals or more.

The original statement claimed that they were seen in equal measure.

My post is not a rigorous statistical evaluation simply a general overview. You are using the old two bit statistician tactic of selecting particular non conforming period to prove a fake point. (such as the existing bad run).

The point I was making is this run is unrepresentative of Martins 4 seasons so fans should not panic quite yet.

Looking at thing holistically Swansea have won 8, lost 8, and draw 8. This season with a -3 goal difference. In general good runs and bad runs equal themselves out up to this point. I have pointed out this form is typical not only of Martins tenure at Swansea but MK Dons as well.

The same applies to big wins an big losses. You have set a 3 goals more as your metric. This was not my metric.

Possession stats aligning is my perception and needs a rigorous analysis for Martin's tenure. Alignment is slow and gradual I suspect. Getting 70% possession and 70%+ shots of target 4 times is actually good going. With Swansea the highest possession team in the Championship reportedly to do that every game is currently unrealistic. Swansea are not Man City. I sense it is increasing from last season when possession was regularly inversely proportional to shots on target. Luckily Martin had Piroe.

Martin has recently again identified weaknesses in the team which had identified before but not solved. The inability to do the 'horrible stuff' was discussed after the Reading game. He was particularly vexed about this suggesting action will be forthcoming. He claims to have discussed it with the backroom team. The young CB brought in to add beef have not come on as much as hoped Darling, Wood for example.

Wood Darling and Cabango are young and had very little Championship experience before this season. They had not come across the like of Deeney, Carroll before or the presumably better organised pressing in the higher league.

I do not use slurs like OCD to other posters however apt it may seem. It is a medical affliction, as I understand it, and inappropriate in forum banter in my opinion.

What was your metric then?

There are useful stats and worthless stats, a useful stat is goals scored. What point in a stat that shows we cannot even score from very good chances? What was the XG last time, 2.75? Excellent XG yet poor return.

Possession stats are, to myself anyway, not that useful. We have had the lions share of possession in many games we have lost so what does having the most possession prove?

Martin has identified weaknesses yet none of them are his big weakness, the inability to see that what we are doing is not working. We cannpt keep clean sheets and we struggle to score, not a winning mix.

One last thing, the existing bad run is not a fake point, it is a very real point. We have not won in 8, we have not scored first in 8.

Today we are up aganst a team with problems, they have several of their best players missing and results haven't been great for them either. This is a game we should be winning, lets hope we show some fight tonight eh.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

So what your saying is, don’t expect your points to be accurate.

If you don’t think “big wins” are 3+ goal margins, what on earth is your metric? 2-0 is not a big win.

You simply need to check what you write, because it’s often wildly inaccurate and then you spend the rest of the thread scrambling trying to justify the unjustifiable.

Your post was laced with OCD, it was not a slur. You kept going to fulfil a pre thought out A-Z brief, clearly struggled to fill each one, yet persisted anyway despite what it did to the quality of your post.

I got to y) and added one more to round things off nicely. OCD is a medical affliction as I understand it. You should not taunt other posters with suggestions of mental illness like this. It is majorly sub prime.

I remind you this is a forum not a University PhD peer review. Perhaps it is you that needs to reflect. You need to chill out a little. I give my view which you have failed to discredit. I will do an analysis to when I have time and at my own discretion.

So you admit you added one just to make up the A-Z and to “round it off nicely”, that’s the OCD trait I referred to.

I was not making a medical diagnosis, I don’t know how often you feel the need to make things mentally satisfying. I am making the observation that the post was very OCD in its construction, whether that goes into other areas is a private matter for you and your medical professionals.

You don’t need to be a PhD student to make accurate points, it took me about 3 minutes to do the sufficient research needed to debunk the points I bothered to read. That’s all you had to do in order to ensure what you say is accurate.

I’m sure we are all looking forward to what “general observation that doesn’t have to be accurate” gets added.
