Russell Martin : The sticking points and the truth behind them 1st Jun 2023 10:51
Russell Martin finds himself in no mans land this morning despite it being clear negotiations for players, his own contract, and the compensation fee for him and his staff for Swansea remain the sticking point. Swansea City are standing by their enhanced compensation for Martin which is explained below. 0

It was reported that Martin had agreed to join Southampton well before their last game of the season so it’s ludicrous they are claiming they were a championship club.

Have they appointed Cardiff city lawyers on this one?

Yep, but we know this is likely to drag on for a bit yet, all about the money Yanks want the penny and the bun, whatever SCFC's needs are, are secondary.

Whatever anyone thinks of these owners they drive people to the enth degree in business. In this case it’s fine. They haven’t allowed it to affect their manager search at all.

Problem is when trying to purchase players as we have seen before it doesn’t always work well.

I've asked this elsehwere so I'll it here now, what if their hard nosed dealing causes the deal to collapse, will it still be fine if we end up paying 2 manahers at the same time, or having to pay Martin off?

Sometimes, in everyone's best interests, you have to compromise.

If the sticking point is the compensation due for Martin, why not do the deal at the agreed level for support team and the championship fee for Russ, and do it without prejudice to our claim they have to pay the Premier league compensation fee? In that way both clubs can move on and appoint managers and the dispute over whether they have to pay more is determined at adjudication or arbitration down the line.

it's amazing here on this thread and another thread has been opened referring to the owners playing hardball for the compo......so many short memories remember when the owners were being slated for selling Connor Robert's cheaply ....get a grip guys be consistent.....
when we get the money we are rightly owed as Southampton when they tapped up Russell were a premier league side so should pay at that rate we as a club will have more funds for our new manager

it is consistent mun, we didn't want to lose Roberts, Martin is an entirely different situation. You cannot apply the same rules here.

If the Roberts deal had collapsed we'd happily have kept him, do we want to keep Martin?

I think my views on Martin are well known..I'm sure the ownership know what they are doing..I guess a compromise will be agreed hence the specialist lawyers
the Americans have made some errors during their time here but they do understand contractual law ...I'm sure they wouldn't risk the scenario you suggest ..domt forget that will also need to pay these lawyers

why would the Roberts deal collapse, if the deal was seen as cheap?
If we would have happily kept him, then we should have upped the price.

If the difference is as reported an extra million and it’s there in black and white in his contract then the club are right to chase it.

Can’t say that’s coming across, always have said our club and shirt is only on loan. Couldn’t care who is at the swans or who they are. If they sweat blood whilst here that’s good enough for me.

If they get the push or whatever, so be it.

I get the impression that Martin did sweat blood whilst here, So to speak. I don’t know of course. Just came across as someone who absolutely loved his job and worked hard doing it. And also expected the same from everyone else.
Probably could fault him on some of his tactics, but he is still learning. Personally, I can’t fault him on his work ethics and general benefit to everyone at the club as a whole.

Spot on a rival who have a very good chance of going up automatically trying to fleece a side who have an outside chance of gaining a play off spot.

Also if this is how they bargain for a manager, what are they going to be like with Piroe and Grimes for example.

If it doesn't hinder our manager search and Keith has indicated that it's not that is good enough for me.

My view is this will eventually play out well for Swansea City and put some extra coffers into our budget.

We as fans need patience and as Russ always said trust the ongoing process

My main criticism was he put his next job career prospects before winning games.

If he had budged on his tactics we would have had more chance of a play off spot.

Same could be said about Fisher though he cost us points as well.

But none of that matters now we just need to move forward as a club and I think we will.

I agree with most of what you say, but I don’t think he was being stubborn in his tactics, simply to gain interest for his next job.

I think he truly believes in his way of playing and that it should work.
He wanted to win games, but figured that if we continue to play in his way, as the players buy into it more and get used to it, the results will come.

I’m pretty sure he will try his way again at Southampton. Maybe it will work because he has better players in the roles he needs, who knows.
But he’s also gained more experience through us, so he should have a plan b now also.

I honestly think he would have stayed, if he was backed more, and the slow improvement in our results would have continued.

I think Martin will be a premier league manager

Yes he may well be a PL manager one day

Martinez
Brendan
Potter
Cooper

My point is we don't have a PL budget so should have adapted.

Players are probably due back for pre-season training around 24 June. Southampton know that Martin has a full set of coaches ready to hit the ground running when the players return, and will have been watching videos to gauge the quality of what he has, talking to the owners about who is being sold off, and thinking ahead to his own shopping list. So they have no reason to move quickly and we can expect this to drag on if they have anything to do with it.

If we are genuinely not going to pay compensation for our next manager (and therefore no haggling with anyther employer needed) and the club has a shortlist of between-jobs candidates ready to interview, as I hope and would expect is the case, then we might not be under pressure to blink first. However, it will take time for the next manager to put their dream backroom team together, and ideally the club would want that finished by the 24th (or even sooner, as the transfer window opens on the 14th).

We may have a strong case in law, but the clock is on Southampton's side.

Good sound analysis.
Right now, we have a coach whose head has been turned and clearly does not want to be with us.
Sadly, we have to accept compensation is secondary now as having a coach in these circumstances is damaging.
Frankly, I’d fire him right now and bite the bullet .
We simply can’t afford to keep him .

Whilst I'm fully supportive of the Swans giving Southampton compensation to take Martin off our hands I'm also supportive of the board playing hardball in regards to how much we should give them.

It’s fair comment mate but right now,he cannot stay so it’s pretty much damage limitation.
It would be madness to go into the new season with him in situ which seems possible given this compensation issue.
We would have a coach clearly looking to jump ship.
