| Swansea City chairman makes brave announcement for the new season on 15:03 - Jun 23 with 2150 views | vetchonian | Again, Martin was "backed" elsewhere on here I have listed the numerous players brought in during his time here, admittedly not all his choices but the likes of Piroe and though he had his issues Obafemi contributed to the team. In his first window Martin choices were Downes ,Patterson, Ethan Laird, these cam in alongisde Walsh,Natchm,Prioe and Obafemi plus the various loanees he was given Christie and Wolf, in the January window along with his pick Fisher then Darling and Sorinola. So he was backed despite all the protestations. But come this last January yes no one came in and this is what is focused on. As has been said by then I think there were issues with "faith" in him . As we know we finished the last 10 games of the season with the same squad of players available before the January window and despite losing the likes of Allen and Fulton for the last few games did better than the previous 23 games following a change in formation and style of play The key bits for more are where Coleman talks about results and league position..... when Martin comes out with statements like these "I’d said to the players from the off, though, that we weren’t going to be outcome-based. We weren’t going to focus on the results." "There were times, even then, when I’d get more angry winning a game if we went away from what we were trying to be, than I would be upset if we lost but stuck to what we were doing. I’m still like that now, and my players know it. I will always accept getting beat as long as they run hard and stick to what we work on." Im sure it struck home to the owners. Any way the past is the past lets all go forward with an open mind for both the manager and the owners lets see what happens over the next season. We know we don't have a huge pot to spend but we also saw that if the majority of this squad can be kept with a few additions we can be competitive in this division. Onwards and upwards they but Coleman will need to back those words with deeds | |

You are absolutely right Keith but this article will provoke response referring to the lack of previous managers being backed.....so I was just preempting that. Personally and again purely my personal opinion I m sure that these words form Coleman are a reference to the current Southampton manager "Michael has a proven track record of galvanising a group of players into a collective unit," we know of the problem players and the issues last season maybe there are two sides to every story though I am not saying the likes of Obafemi is blameless and " believe in his ability and his belief in the Swansea way, while he also possesses the capability to adapt within games to drive results. This is a results-driven business. Our position in the table matters to all of us and we are focused on supporting Michael with everything he needs to succeed." I spoken of this earlier....that guy at Southampton we saw rarely adapting during games and they themselves admitted to not being "results focused" surely this is when to use your words "faith was lost".. Any way onwards and upwards I must stop being so previous manager obsessed...

I pledged as soon as HE left I wouldn’t mention him again, and certainly detach him from my thought process . I cannot wait for Duffers to start and scrub our club clean again. Last two years have proven divisive . One caveat though is Duffers has also too many teeth .

It is a brave thing to say, makes it sund like there will be at least several millions given for transfers, lets face it how many people believe that will happen? We should all get behind Duff from the off...from today then I guess, lets just hope the owners are yet again making promises they won't keep. With a few decent players, specially at wide positions (hopefully with pace) we have the core of a team capable of challenging. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We spent several millions in the last two summer windows so it's not that unbelievable.

| Swansea City chairman makes brave announcement for the new season on 18:59 - Jun 23 with 1665 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Martin was backed as well as could reasonably be expected. January was painful for Martin because despite the backing results continued to be poor. What could he say? He had been given 18 months by then and still results were poor. a) "my methods are not working" b) "My signing of Fisher and Sorinola were mistakes" c) "We need help with physicality in January as we are light up top". c) was chosen not surprisingly. There was no January reflex comfort blanket (£3m) and Levien and Silverstein fronted up and took the blame. Martin did not let off and continued to moan. Kaplan turned you and give him some home truths. January is always tough with a cash premium. Even WBA kept Grant who they now want shot of. "Forget about a new contract you are fighting to keep your job mate and that means not slagging us off". The fans were easy meet for Martin who was the voice of the club after Winter stayed out of things. "Martins narrative" persists. Meanwhile Cooper and Cullen were risked and did pretty well. Just like they are supposed to after 10 years of schooling. [Post edited 23 Jun 2023 19:04]

The photo above the article with the new Chairman and his kids, would have been a lot better, (and more kudos to him) if you could have had a word with him first, to put himself and his daughters in his new sponsor’s Swans kit. Didn't we spend 3 million one window, pre season? Even then we sold first. If we are goingto sppend several millions I think it won't just be Piroe thats sold and we will still make a profit on dealings. That could point to the team being weaker over all at the end of it, unless Duff and the team can find some diamonds in the rough again. There again, if Duff is going to play with 3 centre backs and wingers (or at least proper wide midfielders) then not having full backs may not be a problem.

I'd imagine that much like his predecessors Duff will be given in the region of £2-3m for Summer spending. Perhaps more depending on sales if recent investments have covered the shortfalls. It's a drum I've banged before, but the accusation that current ownership is somehow "tight" when it comes to spending just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. When the money is available they've generally spent it. Perhaps not always wisely (The Sigurdsson cash springs to mind), but they have. More in the wage bill in recent years than anywhere else. Even in the aftermath of relegation, when we were trying desperately to sell almost anything of value Potter was still allowed to spend in the region of £6m on players.

Ah, well Im not saying they haven't spent and I never have. My feeling is they make big promises then don't entirely live up to them. What was said by our new man makes it sound like Duff will get a lot of money and even in todays depressed market, 2-3 million is not much really and it doesn't (to me at least) equate to several millions, its a few at best.

When you lost more than £10m in the last set of accounts £2-3m is a lot of money. It's potentially two Joel Piroes. We're going to have to work hard to find value, but that's OK. We've done it before.

I think Duff may have been allowed to spend that at Barnsley, so he's either been promised, a bigger budget to buy players [although I expect a head coach / manager just gives those above a list perhaps, but I very much doubt he signs transfers off] its either that or he's seen what previous managers have moved onto. In all reality we are where we are geographically and financially as a club of our size, with the wealth and stature of the clubs above us we've done really well in the last 10years or more and we appear to be a stable Championship side and with that and a few flirtations with the playoffs, that's probably out lot, as much as it would be nice shooting down the big boys again. The wealth in the Premiership these days, is a difficult place for us to attain with a club of our size without a sugar daddy looking for a plaything etc The liberty holds what 22,000 perhaps, gonna be difficult to achieve a lot more, I quite enjoy the Championship, by nice to achieve more I know, but I say it again we are where we are.

| Swansea City chairman makes brave announcement for the new season on 08:22 - Jun 24 with 1317 views | RichardO | Galvanising a group of players into a collective unit seems to say it all, if Duff can do that then looking forward to next season. Let's hope our collective unit has players who can use their speed of thought, skills and pace to be able to take on players, can pass to create space, make runs on and off the ball also to make space and finish effectively. A collective who knows how to defend and have the right attributes in the place at the right time to counter breakaways. Don't want to see a collective of players floundering to take players out because bad positioning or have no understanding how to press as a team, pressing as individuals with no support leaving space and time for opposition players to pick their passes and open up our defence at will. Wishing Duff all the best and he will have the tools, players and coaching staff at his disposal to create that galvanised winning collective this season. | | | |

Indeed, we don’t ask for muchðŸ˜. Seriously though, as happy as I am to see Martin out and Duff in, I hope we are going to be in a bit if a Sousa situation whereby Martin’s two years will have been the grounding for our success under Duff.

CHRIS PEARLMAN - C.O.O Remember him?….., "The club has a rich history and a fantastic story to tell. It will be my job to help tap into that from a commercial perspective," he said. "Additionally, I recognise the important role the Supporters Trust has to play and I believe being here on a daily basis will allow for more frequent and improved communications with them." Sounds familiar??? PS. I felt this was worth sharing, so I’ve copy&pasted it elsewhere

That's why Watson has been brought in. How much did Luton spend last summer money helps but it's not everything [Post edited 24 Jun 2023 9:55]

Downes, Piroe & Wood are proof that it's very possible. Darling & Fisher not so much! I'm assuming Piroe will be sold this summer, there's no way all of that money will be available to Duff but that's just financial reality for us. A massive gain would be to use the loan market better than the last couple of years.

I think Watson will have a far wider remit, meaning he can bring those players in without too much interference. With Winter now officially gone I think Watson will carry on doing what he does best but with a crossover of duties that Winter once covered. Albeit Coleman is there he is totally inexperienced.
