| Violent Crime Down Not Up 17:21 - Nov 28 with 1489 views | johnlangy | An interesting article written on a media platform i'd never heard of called Substack says this 'The overall story in Britain – as far as two decades of police, survey and hospital records can attest – is of violent crime in steady decline. And strange as it may sound to say it, the streets of these islands are perhaps safer now than they have ever been.' I wonder how many of the rest of the media outlets we all know and love will report this good news. | | | | |

There’s only one I subscribe and pay for and that’s the one by Sam and Lawrence Freedman - excellent stuff. As for the OP I reckon it’s because bad news trumps good news so is amplified. We keep hearing how dodgy and rubbish our current politicians are but I have a hunch that they’ve always been thus and we just know more about them.

Or it could be many people are scared to go out in high risk areas and stay in particularly after dark.

There have always been dodgy places. Mind you, it may well have something to do with young people not having a culture of going out as much in general.

Gwyn there are areas of Swansea even close to the city centre I would have felt safe late in the evening 5 years but ago not now. Groups of doped up anti social youngsters are not something you want to confront, particularly with the current knife culture.

This 1000% Gaslighting ba//+cks that doesn't equate to what our eyes and ears are telling us... Our capital city is safe under Kublai Khan apparently... Stats tell us we should have lost WW2, Bankrupted by coming off the gold standard in the late 30s, we weren't screwed by Heath in 74, our economy wasn't broken by Brown in 2008, and that mass immigration makes us all wealthier and happier... You may feel that way but majority do not Were you strolling around Tottenham, Stoke Newington , or Tower Hamlets Happy to drop your daughter off at a Tube station Sarfvofctgedriver? Fear of crime is greater as shits get away with it and by that I mean getting a just a few years prison for life changing assaults Crime is worth the risk for many Check out the mobile phone thefts , logged at theft when they are legally Robbery Stats are simply massaged and misleading Sir, you are kidding yourself

A metropolis of 7 odd million people is going to have areas that are dangerous. The ‘fear’ is something that’s holding us back in some areas. If we’re saying London isn’t safe until every borough is then we’ll be waiting a long time.

The facts here are violent crime has decreased yet the fear of crime has increased. Both can be (and are) right.

Violent crime is. | | | |
| Violent Crime Down Not Up on 12:06 - Nov 29 with 594 views | Demitrius | It's not just perception of fear - as OHL says a lot of crime isn't reported because of a lack of confidence in it being investigated. Violent crime down? why do we hear of stabbings now on an almost daily basis. It's become normalised. Shoplifting is up 20% - it's an epidemic - in major cities feral types are just wandering in and brazenly helping themselves or rushing the stock out in gangs - store security helpless to stop them for fear of being stabbed. My tiny local Tesco express has recently employed security guards, the chemists was done over last week in an armed robbery. I live in a large village - but if I look at the crime stats it's considered a low crime rural area because of the low population density. Fraud also up - try reporting that - comes back everytime that they wlll only investigate when money has been taken and lost by yourself. They don't give a toss about identity theft as that is so widespread there are no resources to tackle it. There is a nasty unpleasant atmosphere everywhere and the UK has gone from a high trust society to a cesspit in a generation or two. I lived in London for 15 years and it has changed for the worse, especially at night, since then despite the statistical data saying otherwise. I certainly wouldn't get a nightbus anywhere myself now and would not allow any female relative of mine to do so whereas 20-30 years ago it was always a cheap way of getting home for everyone after a night out. | |

Take your point on London . An actress who has appeared on Bridgerton refuses to visit London anymore as she has been attacked twice recently while just walking along . Mobile phone thefts are through the roof as are muggings for expensive watches.Yesterday an armed gang ran through The Merry Hill shopping centre near Birmingham . One man attacked and stabbed. One of them was seen weilding a samurai sword ! This was at 5 pm in a crowded shopping centre !!

Stayed at Waterloo back in May as we up to see Peter Kay, something I won't be doing either of again anytime soon. O2 area seems tidy enough and Tower bridge area as well though in fairness.

Yep. I know Merry Hill well as one of my best pals is from Stourbridge, he always had a few tales of it attracting a few wrong 'uns but never any Samurai Swords. Then again, how many videos have we seen the last few years of machete fights on our streets. I don't recall many of them being arrested even when the police turn up, which is usually after the perps have scattered. As there would be NFA in many instances are these incidents even recorded in the violent crime stats? I hate my eldest going into London with her mates. She's been in about 5 or 6 times this year. They are all fairly street savvy but on the second trip her friend got her phone snatched in a large store. Might not be classed as violent crime but still shakes someone up and ruins a day out not to mention the financial loss, inconvenience and stress. Having said that, I don't feel comfortable with them going to Oxford or Reading either. Both have gone downhill fast these last 20 years and there is a simmering criminality at large everywhere you look in both town centres. Always incidents by day and by night, from drug addicted aggressive begging to coked up drunks fighting in the streets. Lost count of the times this year I've seen a store detective or security guard chasing a thief out of a shop. A teenager was raped in the steet 2 weeks ago by two men in central Reading and an office worker died after being assaulted by a beggar outside the station recently. It didn't used to be like this and we shouldn't have to live like this, constantly looking over your shoulder and in a state of high alert in town and city centres. It's become part of modern living and I take no comfort in these current stats. [Post edited 29 Nov 13:11]
