I have many nephews nieces around Swansea all of whom had Welsh infused into them
Not a.word was spoken outside school
People haven’t got it yet
If you’re from a family that has Welsh as its lingua Franca then they will always speak and think on Welsh
And that’s fine
My fathers family did
If English is , as is the case in the big industrial towns/ cities then people think and speak in English
And always will
Welsh is divisive and holds the country back

There is no one simple answer and I could write a essay on this (don't worry, I wont!)
As with most things it's very difficult to pull out single items and say with any certainty that that's why. The English/Welsh school debate is one of those as it depends what metrics you use. In Pisa rankings of core subjects english speaking schools do silghtly better (but not significantly so). Across GCSEs Welsh medium schools perform better. English medium schools have a slightly higher % acheving top grades.
Also as WR alluded to, deprivation has a massive effect too, as does % of ethnic children which drives results up (London scores really drive up the England average).
It's a bit broad brush but the biggest difference between England and Wales is curriculum. Since 2014, education in England and right from Year 1 has become incredibly formal and knowelge based. In the meantime Wales and Scotland went for skills and experience based system. Since then the gap has grown and continues to grow.
You can't argue that the English system has been successful and is now in the top 10 world wide with mostly Asian countries.
That doesn't say that the system doesn't lead to problems as it most certainly does. [Post edited 8 Sep 12:48]

The reality is the Senedd played around with the curriculum and we have fallen further behind again.
The real losers are those poor kids whose educational system is letting them down. The real losers will be the future adults who struggle to gain a decent job because they have worse grades than English counterparts.
Then we get people wondering why the young are leaving Wales/Cymru, they blame the English "incomers" and they blame Westminster and they blame...well they blame anybody besides the Senedd because it can't possibly be the government of Cymru that is the problem.
The real dinosaurs are those who cannot accept the future will be different to the past, the real dinosaurs revel in the past and want to keep us there.
You want factual data Res, the average student in Wales gets results comparable to the most disadvantaged students in England. In English Welsh PISA scores average 459 for reading, Englands average is 497. The gap is similar in maths and science.
The Welsh curriculum ( that the Senedd recently changed ) is letting our children down and the long term impact of this could be disastrous.
You can move with the times or you can stagnate and Cymru is stagnating. We are going backwards.
No wonder my sons long term ambition is to emigrate to Italy, he says everything is better there than here and maybe he's right because as long as the "old SCHOLL DYNASAURS" are in charge this country is heading for a bad place.
