Jofra Archer has been named in the squad, and rightly so. He offers genuine pace and he’s still relatively unknown to the other teams. I don’t agree with the omission of David Willey though. I wouldn’t have had Liam Dawson. But hey ho.

This is the first round robin CWC since Australia/New Zealand in 1992. For me, that was the best CWC. Australia were big favourites, but lost their first four games. England are big favourites for this one. Let’s hope we get off to a better start.

Come on England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

England should have scored another 40/50 runs. Bairstow did very well but though it seems harsh he was well set but decided he would start slogging once he got his ton and got himself out when he could have continued batting properly and scored 150 plus and batted India out of the game. Morgan as brainless as ever, Buttler should have been in earlier than him. We'll need to bowl better than usual to stop India winning imho.

Great recovery from a sticky patch in the middle. Bairstow got bogged down after getting his ton. The wicket was his first attempt at a slog so yes, it does seem harsh. This opposition are no mugs, we should remember that.

Rishabh Pant is immature but a wildcard, compared to vijay shankar who is useless. but he's dangerous at 4, lets see

but once you get past 4, india's middle order is very mediocre

and once you get past dhoni/pandya, indias tail is up there with the worst in this tournament. chahal, bumrah literally cant hold a bat

Woakes only conceding 3 runs off his first four overs is immense.

Woakes takes Sharma too. Would be quite something for this middle order to chase ten per over from here.

Another great match

Dhoni has lost a lot of bat speed. Not sure he still has it in him for a late slog, but the mans track record speaks for itself

Pandya can only hit straight so England need to get the field settings right

im not so sure, not with kohli as captain. jadav isnt really a hitter and dhoni lacks the bat speed. and they're under a lot of pressure to keep their wickets, as india has four horrible tailenders

as an india fan, though, i was incredibly conflicted and basically couldnt bear to watch (other than a few bits and pieces). india are already through to the semifinal, i have a soft spot for england, i dislike pakistan, i have tickets to the 2 v 3 semifinal in edgbaston (which my dad is flying to the uk for), and i had no interest seeing aus v nz in the semis.

india is definitely overrated. only 5 bowlers, no tail batting... if sharma and kohli fail, we're basically screwed. losing a player of dhawans class is an absolute killer, and forces a middle order batsmen in rahul to be an opener.... india may bring back shankar for jadav since he provides a bowling option (and both are equally uninspiring with the bat)

India will beat England today and England will not qualify for the semi finals. The Aussies will win the WC, they are the strongest side by some distance. I also think they will be too good for England in the Ashes.

Perhaps it's the cynic in me but I got that impression too towards the end of the innings when India were hitting singles. If true, I'm not sure it was a wise strategy as India could face England again downstream. That said, I still feel England need to beat New Zealand to make the semis.

I hope so! Seen England fail too many times to be anything but pessimistic. Even yesterday they did their best to throw it away - should have scored 40/50 more runs and Root then drops Sharma at the start of his innings and he goes on to get a ton. For me we have too many bowlers who don't really look threatening, Wood and Stokes in particular are both too expensive and don't look like taking a wicket. Weird approach from India - very slow start in their batting when they needed to get off quickly against a large total. Only one six hit through the entire innings and only five wickets down? They just petered out at the end. You could be forgiven for thinking they were more interested in stopping Pakistan from overtaking England in the table.

it was a very odd end to it, although England bowled very well.
Stokes was expensive yesterday but has been bowling well, and Wood was expensive yesterday, and middling v Aus (6 and over is not that bad these days) - before that he was 3/40, 2/40, 3/18, 2/52, 2/53, 1/19! I mean, for your first change bowler, you're not going to get much better than that. He'd get in literally every other team in this competition. 13 wickets is pretty decent.
Very hard on a flat pitch with a white ball that doesn't swing to be really threatening, especially against a team not really looking to score big runs, as India weren't. Kohli in particular would prefer to score 10 off an over in ones and twos than hit boundaries - it's hard to even bowl a dot to him.
Only Starc has got more wickets than Archer I think, and Woakes was superb yesterday. I'd like to see more from Rashid. Plunkett brilliant and has to start now.
If you're genuinely criticising a team for scoring 337 against INDIA, with Bumrah's absolutely phenomenal bowling, I'm not quite sure what you would be pleased with to be honest!

Bare bones.

337 was a good score as it turned out. I think that Morgan and Root had 400 plus in mind when they got to the crease, but the pitch seemed to slow up and it was thanks to Stokes that we got the 337 - that was a proper good innings in the circumstances as he could have panicked or let the pressure get to him. He's looking the most likely of our batsmen to get us home in a crisis. India got a little too close to our score for my liking on that pitch, but never looked like winning so that's probably nitpicking.

I think that we'll beat New Zealand and get into the last 4.

there are two non-cynical takes as to why india batted the way they did at the end:

1. they realised they were not going to catch up to englands score, and decided to keep their wickets to preserve their net run rate (and effectively mathematically ensure their qualification to the semis)
2. they knew if they won, theyd secure 1st spot and pakistan would get 4th. playing pakistan is a headache for india, too much other pressure, noise that comes with playing them, and they just figured itd be best to avoid it. england is clearly a superior team to pakistan who are basically an above average squad, but playing england carries so much less of the other baggage

On India's innings, as others have noted during the match, their middle order is nothing special so it was perfectly sensible of them to go steadily at first and keep wickets in hand. It was always a stiff chase and I think they recognised it wasn't on and since they knew they didn't need to win they simply stopped trying.

India have better bowlers overall than England (even though England's are good) and excellent specialist batsmen, but they don't have the wealth of all-rounders that England have. We're so cynical about our side we have to invent conspiracies but when the openers fire they are very hard to match and other sides (including India) admit it publicly.

i think we can accept they'll, at least, beat one of SL and Bangladesh.
they're currently 99/0 after 17 overs.

The India v Bangles game yesterday was very similar to the England v India game the other day - same pitch I think.

England v Kiwis today. Apparently long boundaries up there and NZ not great runners - we should win this but if Williamson goes large then it might be very tight.
