Jofra Archer has been named in the squad, and rightly so. He offers genuine pace and he’s still relatively unknown to the other teams. I don’t agree with the omission of David Willey though. I wouldn’t have had Liam Dawson. But hey ho.

This is the first round robin CWC since Australia/New Zealand in 1992. For me, that was the best CWC. Australia were big favourites, but lost their first four games. England are big favourites for this one. Let’s hope we get off to a better start.

Come on England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

Hope we can win the toss again and bat first, make a big total and apply scoreboard pressure.

I think this is key.
Bat first and we have a great chance.

I'm not sure that the toss matters much here. It looks like being a biffer's paradise up there and that should suit us whoever bats first. However one batsman can pretty much win an odi on his own and Williamson could be that man. Apparently they lost both games when he scored less than 50 and won the rest.

Ferguson ruled out with injury. That helps.

A lot depends on the pitch and our expectations here. If it's a 350 pitch we'll be fine, but if it's a 250 pitch and we don't know that it is a 250 pitch then we'll get into a lot of trouble I fear.

Yes, if they beat Bangladesh and we lose to the Kiwis. Sri Lanka still mathematically could but would need to beat India and have a huge swing in the net run rate to overtake England. It's in our hands though, beat NZ we're in the semis.

Sri Lanka can't finish above us as the number of wins takes priority over run rate.

We're doing OK here but we need around 350 to be confident of victory.

At this rate we'll do well to make 300.

The pitch has slowed up a lot so 305 is more than likely enough, but NZ do have one or two players who could score fast and/or big so it could be very tight if they get going. I'd like to see Williamson out cheap obviously.

We're going to have to bowl very well, I can see this going to the wire.

India will beat England today and England will not qualify for the semi finals. The Aussies will win the WC, they are the strongest side by some distance. I also think they will be too good for England in the Ashes.

So do I! England played well yesterday - had a bit of luck here and there, particularly with the Williamson dismissal but won comfortably in the end. We do need a good start from Roy/Bairstow/Root I feel because the rest can be either great or poor depending on how the pitch is playing.

England are coming good just when it matters. It hasn't been perfect with those three defeats but the expectation on them was so big being no1 in the world that this reality check has probably served them well. We also know how important Plunkett is to the team and how Moeen is not in the right place at the moment. We also know that whatever the conditions if we get the chance to bat first we take it.

Next Thursday will be thriller and i'm bloody away so can only follow on cricinfo.

It looks like Oz v NZ and England v India in the last four. Can't see NZ beating Oz without a lot of luck but if I were Oz I'd be fearing that they are due that much luck after yesterday when it all went wrong - toss, stupid runouts etc.

Everyone seems convinced that the toss is vital so I'll have to go along with that until it's proved wrong. I don't think that it's a good mentality for the teams though even if it's true. On a consistent pitch I'd fancy us to beat India whether we win the toss or not, but Australia would be tough in a final obviously. Will be cheering for NZ in the other game as will most people I would imagine.

Pakistan v Bangles might be entertaining today - if Pakistan wins the toss.

They have to win by about 312 runs to go through. So if they scored 400 they'd have to bowl out the Bangles for 90 odd. It's impossible but would be interesting to see how they took it on. If you are bowling out the other side for not many then you won't need many bowlers and you only need your best two or three who can bowl themselves out at the start. The rest of the side could be batsmen and the best hitters you've got. It's going to be impossible but it would be slightly interesting if Pakistan won the toss. It's a shame that the difference on run rate is so big - their fault for falling apart against the Windies.

They also got smashed by India and squeaked past Afghanistan, too, which didnt help their net run rate.

Perhaps more unlucky was that their rainout was against Sri Lanka, who to me, is the second worst team in this tournament, while New Zealand's rainout was against India

glad pakistan has won the toss. should be fun

I’m no expert but it sounds unfair to use NRR if it can be influenced so much by bowling or batting first.

Would be fairer to base it on their records against the top 3 sides.

I think that the secret to NRR has always been to narrow the gap between your score and that of your opponent even if it means giving up on the game. If your opponent gets 300 and you are 48-5 then you have to try to get somewhere near 200 even if you give up the game. If you bat first then you've got to get 200 even if you know that they'll knock it off pretty easily. If you fall apart in that situation, knowing about NRR, surely it's your own stupid fault? It's like being 4-0 down at half time in a footie game and making sure that you don't lose 8-0.

It might not be perfect but I'm not sure what else you could do. There would presumably be flaws in the alternatives.

Anyhow Pakistan not really going for this are they? Same side, same batting order, same old.

Zaman out for 13 off 31 balls. I guess they're not going to make 400.

Sri Lanka four down after fifteen overs, though with a fair four runs per over, so can't see them troubling India too much. Big question: can SA shock the Aussies? It'd be nice to see, but jeez, I can't see anyone stopping Oz now.
