...got a favourite? People often ask me about things I like to do when back in town and the parks are something I always enjoy. Hard to pinpoint why exactly but appreciate the high level of maintenance and the general lay outs, Strangely, well I think it’s strange, my most pleasurable walks are in the colder months, particularly on the morning of a frost, Regents Park from south to north is a regular stroll, though love those smaller inner city spaces like Tavistock Square. Of course, Queens Park is rarely off my mind. |  |

I lived in roehampton for 16 and was right in the middle of Richmond Park,wimbledon common and Barnes common all within a short stroll.
And QPR was only a 72 bus ride away.

I lived in Roehampton and Mortlake for a bit, and those three were on your doorstep. Richmond was always my favourite because as a kid, I used to go to the limb centre at Roehamton and the ambulance drivers always detoured to the park so I could see the deers. In my time, I’ve also had Battersea Park (Clapham Common ain’t much in my view); and from Pimlico i could take a stroll to Green Park.
However, while not a park per se, out Greenford way you’ve got a huge expanse of green belt called Horsenden Hill. When ever I’m back I will easily lose a good few hours going for a walk up there. Long may all these parks and spaces remain for they make London unique.

Apart from running around the outside, I didn’t take any notice of parks between the age of 18 and however old I was when my kids were two. Then I started spending a lot of time in parks.
My kids learned to ride bikes in the grounds of Chiswick House. Beautifully looked after 18th century gardens, lots of surprising nooks and crannies and lovely cake. Heaven for five year olds, and their henchmen. |  | | |

I rather like Regents Park and Primrose Hill as a nice wander. Also enjoy the St.James Park and Green Park stroll as well. All well looked after, with nice views and back into central London with minutes. |  |

I can’t imagine any other major city has comparable green spaces to London. One of the city’s greatest assets. Personal favourites are Clissold Park in Stoke Newington, Waterloo Park between Archway and Highgate, and the Heath. So many lovely walks, picnics and just knocking a ball about. One of the few things I really miss about living away, which is weird as I now have countryside on my doorstep...but it’s not the same as a great city park. |  |

Horsenden Hill, well that triggers memories. Board the 245 on East Lane, alight at Sudbury Town, easy walk then hours of non parented malarky. Another vote for this green space, big swing(where my youngest brother broke an arm), canal(where I fell in), golf course(where we nicked balls while in play  )great views, running with dogs.... | |

I’ve always thought the Small Faces song was about the churchyard in Spitalfields near where I grew up. The long term homeless have been sleeping in Itchy Park since the Victorian era. Even in the 70s I remember the scraggly bearded men often with a brown paper bag and maybe a bottle of cider for company. With gentrification the bearded men you see in the area now are more likely to be clutching a paper cup of small-batch craft coffee. Not that the homelessness has gone. It may be that the song is about somewhere else. |  | | |

Ravenscourt Park in my younger days gave way to Horsenden Hill Park and kiteflying with the stunning views across London.
In the last few years, walking on history at Northala Hills (thats in Northolt) which provide all the exercise I need with its 4 mounds, purpose built using rubble from the old Wembley Stadium. | | | |

Maybe not in your time, but there was a large commercial bakery, can't remember the name of it, near the end of the road, on the left, going north. When I went past there were several of their vans loading up of a morning. Sometimes a cake would go missing.

Waiting for the 'just backs'so thought i would add a line or two.
As a kid grew up in North London, Alexandra Park spent many a happy day, the viws were terrific see all the way down to Crystal Palace on a clear day, boating lake, pitch & putt, indoor roller skating rink, even remember when they had a small race course.
Running in the county of Middx cross country championship uner 12's there.
Moved around a bit as a teenage 'wild child', Maida Vale a walk down Edgware Road straight into Hyde Park, many a summers day spent swimming in the Serpentine especially the summer of 76.
Lived in Belsize Park for a while to, Haampstead Heath on the doorstep, great place to stroll around, swim in the ponds, a drink in 'Jack Straws' on the highest point they say in london.
Early married life in Camden Town, Regents Park and Parliment Hill was just so good to take the kids when little.
Now out in the wilds of Suffolk, lovely county with many beautiful places to go on the door step, even bits of Essex away from the maddening crowds but there really is something special about the green spaces in our great capital city. |  | | |

Found a new one for me recently, Fryent Country Park up near Wembley. Surprisingly beautiful big wild aaea in a sh*tty part of London, had some amazing walks with kids through there.
Took the gloss off it a bit when a psycho stabbed a young woman recently, but aside from that really recommend it.
Holland / Richmond / Gunnersbury / Chiswick / Walpole / Lammas / Blondin / Ravenscourt /Osterley all a big part of my childhood. We're so lucky to have them. [Post edited 24 Apr 2023 16:39]

I'm currently living in W12 for two weeks and have been running on the Scrubs 4 times. The first time I thought it was a sh*t hole but after a couple of times it grows on you and it's the closest you can get to running on a moor in London when you run up from the west.

I believe it was written about Little Ilford Park in Manor Park/East Ham where Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane grew up. |  |

I've played cricket in Victoria Park for 14 years so I have a tremendous affinity for it and the memories made there. Not least when we won the league and went on an absolute rager at the Dolphin.
When I lived in Fulham I used to love South Park, a little oasis off Wandsworth Bridge Road. Lots of summer as a young man with a cool box, some sporting gear and the lads messing around. Finally got to play cricket there a few years ago. While the north pitch has the pavilion, the south pitch is surrounded by an old Victorian brick wall, and the echo when you middle the ball is the most satisfying noise I've ever heard |  | | |

I live down that way now - Horniman is great and had never heard of it before we moved here.
Beckenham Place Park, was a shame they got rid of the golf course, but it remains a huge and great big park, river, train tracks, woods - just a shame they don't have deer - could be SE London's Richmond Park. They have created a lake you can swim and kayak in now, but it's not started well and it's now banned for U8s.
From my childhood Richmond Park is No1 for me - used to go there as a kid and still go periodically now with mine. Ravenscourt Park I used to go and play football, tennis in and just meet friends. Regents Park when I was later, use to cycle up from S Bush Sunday mornings to play football there. Holland Park - adventure playground, always had someone injured swinging off that rope swing which would plant you back into the wooden ledge you'd just come off!
Others where I live now (SE London):
Brookmill Park - really small park, hardly a park, in Lewisham. But you can regularly see Kingfishers here - amazing.
Crystal Palace Park - Model Dinosaurs, small farm, great park all round.
Dulwich Park - Boating lake, lots of space, beautiful.
Blythe Hill Fields - great views over London - more of an open space on a hill overlooking London. |
I love Blythe Hill! It’s part of my running route which takes in the various peaks on the Norwood Ridge. Hilly Fields is also really nice as is Telegraph Hill.
Apart from the usual suspects I also really like Mayow and Wells Park.
A walk along the Ravensbourne will take you through some lovely green spaces as well. [Post edited 24 Apr 2023 18:11]
