What bands did you see before they became famous. on 10:04 - Sep 23 by CroydonCaptJack
I saw the Cure loads of times supporting Siouxsie and me and a mate always used to go and see Blancmange. There must have been about fifty people at one early gig we went to.

Vinegar Joe, Kilburn & The High Roads, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dr Feelgood, Pogue Mahone. *Edit. I have since remembered Jimi Hendrix at The Farx in Souhall, The Nice at the same venue and I used to sit on the wall outside and listen to Deep Purple rehearse in the bass players garage.

Saw Pink Floyd at Farx a couple of times. Went there to see an up and coming band called Led Zeppelin - didn’t get in, In fact I never got to see them.

Funny thing REM gigs it seems. Saw them at the Lyceum, early 80,s, as I’d read so much about them in the music press and had the first two albums on vinyl. Paid a lot to get in and went home early. Did 7 encores apparently and the music press raved.
Fast forward many many years to seeing them in LA at the Hollywood bowl. One of the best gigs I’ve been to. Sound guy was British who said they were on it tonight.
Oasis at Kansas City memorial hall. They didn’t looked arsed and we’re shyte.
Radiohead in Lawrence Kansas, college town of Kansas Umiversity. Bends tour and they were magnificent.

Dave Mathews Band at Farm Aid back in the hazy days of the 90s I think .On the bill with Neill Young,John Mellencamp and of course Willie Nelson .They had a lot of people on stage and made plenty of noise I recall but not sure of much else it was an outdoor setting lots of drinks flowing

Saw Elastica at Leeds University just after I arrived up north- nobody had heard of them at that point but I had sod all to do as a lonely southern tw-t so headed down there on my own.
There was only about 10 people in the audience, and for some reason drink was banned in the venue, so the band went backstage and got all their beers and handed them out to the audience. Very odd night.

One of my friends met Justine Frischmann when he interviewed her for the student newspaper. He asked her out and she said no.
Seen blur in the powerhouse in Angel. They were supporting Desmond Decker. Plastic pint glasses and sticky floors. Venue has long since closed. Mirroring the demise of guitar bands in general.

If they were in London, I am pretty sure I was there for two of those. The Gang of Four (great band) and Mekons one and the Theatre of Hate one. You have reminded me that I also saw Big Country supporting U2 which I think was at the Palais.
Gang of Four was one of those great Lyceum Sunday shows. Saw Aswad, U2 and the Scars there too, always great talent. Big Country was in Brixton, not the Academy, not the Fridge, somewhere in between in size, help me someone. Young Marble Giants supporting Cabaret Voltaire in Hammersmith was another cracking show, but can’t claim either was too famous.

Cheers, I grew up with a love of music and was very lucky to be involved in the Ladbroke Grove scene as a young teen (hence my love of the Pink Fairies) I got introduced to David Jones at a Fairies gig once by Sandy R.I.P. and he became famous later in life LOL. My ex Bro in law was in a band signed to Stiff so I used to get to go to quite a few backstage parties after gigs and met Ian Dury & his manager Cosmo Vinyl, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis and Elvis Costello & The Attractions, around the time that Steve Nieve was getting rinsed by a gorgeous looking American girl (allegedly) I also got backstage with Blondie at Hammersmith Odeon once too but they didn't really mingle much. I also used to drink in the Queens Head in Hayes around the time it was Sweet's local and have a tale or two about that concerning just how hard as nails Steve Priest was, despite appearances. I used to see Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page around Hayes occasionally too as they had a flat together in Craven Close? I think it was. I also used to see Keith Moon and Viv Stanshall around at a few places but stayed well clear as Moon the loon wasn't an affectionate pet name. I was very lucky to have grown up in a time where there were so many good bands to go and see and they were generally approachable when not playing.

Saw Placebo at the Dublin Castle Lots of American punk bands on their way up played the Garage - Green Day and The Offspring being the biggest (got turned away from NOFX and The Offspring at the powerhaus the year before for being underage) Supergrass supporting Ride at the Royal Albert hall was a good one too - around the time their first single Caught by the Fuzz was released

The Clash at Crawley Leisure Centre. They were bottled off the stage by rampaging skinheads. They never finished their set. Complete mayhem as I remember.
Orange Juice at some boozer [ forgotten its name] in Tadworth. There was only about 10 in the audience. After the gig which I recall was pretty good, Edwin Collins and the band joined us all for a pint. A decent chap. He clearly had a vision for his musical future and one of them was to play in front of audiences bigger than 10!
There aint half been some clever bastards.

It's Halifax now They hold my deeds... I saw like a post Madness combo there, Lee Thomson hanging upside down from a lighting stand, playing a baritone sax..
Weird but entertaining
Which is actually: After they were famous, before they were famous again...

I was probably there but my memory of venues isn't brilliant unfortunately. There was definitely another venue in Brixton but I can't find what it was even using google.
The Cabs were brilliant live as were the human league in their early years.

The Sundays, when their 1st single had just come out. They were supporting Throwing Muses.
Saw Pulp play bottom of the bill supporting Thousand Yard Stare at the Camden Underworld. They were ace, only about a dozen people there but they gave it 110% anyway.
In fact thinking about it, at various 90s festivals I saw lots of future headliners (e.g. Pulp, Catatonia, Oasis, Ash, Stereophonics, Suede) when they were still playing the little marquees before they graduated to the main stages.
And a couple of rubbish ones.....
Saw Snow Patrol play at the Camden Crawl around 1996. Didn't like them and I still don't.
The Farm supporting The Housemartins, quite a few years before All Together Now, didn't think much of them either.

Was it the Ace?
Saw New Order/James/Stockholm Monsters there in 1982 (I think)

Fascinating stuff Esox!
Didn't think Keith Moon was that much of a violent type, but then I suppose an addiction to the sauce and all the other stuff meant it was probably often on the agenda...

He wasn't violent that I ever saw but he was definitely reckless and loved practical jokes which often involved a degree of peril or destruction.
