The Early Edition Midweek Northern 'Shithousery Special' Match Thread 09:00 - Feb 23 with 34165 viewsDorse

It has been estimated that approximately 13.8 billion years have passed since the beginning of the universe as we know it. Scientists have calculated that around 39% of that time has been wasted by Preston players feigning injury, complaining to the ref or kicking the ball away when their team is a goal up. These figures are startling: it seemed so much longer at the time.

What, if anything, can we expect playing north of Watford gap, midweek, at Preston? Under normal circumstances, a piss-boiling display of rampant gob-bummery administered ad nauseum by the game's foremost exponents of the Dark Arts. Coached by Baphomet himself, Preston have clearly offered their first born daughters to the Evil One in order to gain mystical control over time itself and weakened the minds of Championship referees. Is there any hope?

Yep. We got Charlie Austin. So there.

Didn’t really have to change out of his club suit to deal with most of that...although he does make it look easy. Great keeper no doubt.

It’s a good point and keeps the moment and confidence building. Overall Preston probably shaded it.

But today must be Dykes last chance to start for a while - two guilt edged chances wasted again. And he’s just not doing enough in other areas to bring others into to play to justify not scoring. He looks way off it.

Also Chair needs a break. He’s not doing it. Does have a really bad habit of slowing play down.

Willock and Adomah need to come in and be given a go from the start, they’ve earned it.

I’d stick with Kane and Wallace for now but I’d dearly love an upgrade in the fullback areas
this summer.

Especially as Chaz has gone off by then

Absolutely....we starve him of service all game and then replace him with players that can actually give him the service he needs. He must be seriously frustrated watching Kane belt it everywhere except where it needs to be. I admire Kane’s endeavour, but he had as stinker tonight.

Definitely agree with your last two points, though I thought Chair had a decent albeit ultimately fruitless second half.

Dykes is a tricky one from a man-management point of view. (I'm sure his gilt-edgedness is making him very guilty right now - he looked pretty angry with himself when he was hooked.) I tend to agree he shouldn't be a starter, but can he maintain whatever confidence he still has in his locker from the margins/bench? I fear he'll never come good, but hope to nosh on my words one day. The problem is Bonne's hardly staked a claim to a first-team birth, and Kelman's a kid. Even with Charlie on board, we're still short up front for me.

Shocking second half by both teams. Am I right in saying Austin's shot in the second half was the only shot on target by either side in the second half? And he looked completely shattered shortly afterwards, walking back from an off-side position. Not himself at all tonight

Had tonight been 17 degrees, dry with light breeze we might have had a difference performance, perhaps from both teams. I think the whole two games a week thing would have been exacerbated by the conditions tonight, making the pitch heavy, control more difficult and passing looser - no excuses but just reasons why these sorts of sub par performances can come when there is an expectation that we should steam roll a team like Preston who are on a bad run. History says we don't normally against them and even the 1-3 at there place just before Lockdown V.1.0 was a surprising result, especially after Cameron saw red.

I didn't think Seny had to do too much tonight that would have warranted an 8 score but a solid 7 just because since he was come in, game on game his command of the area and catching crosses and taking the ball under pressure has added steel to our overall defensive improvement and again tonight, saves when needed, catches when needed but the odd misplaced punt out in slippery conditions.

Agree that Austin looked leggy after 20 or so mins tonight and it took Chair a long time to get in to the game. Even Willock tonight when he came on was not able to open them up, although he certainly did bring some more attacking intent down the left with Wallace I think having a steady enough game.

Poor old Todd, it seems he is just a marked man by so many on here and tonight his crossing just gave his detractors some more ammo - however in his defence I think the mere fact that he is getting so many crosses in to the box is testament to him wanting to get on the ball and drive forward.

A solid away point on a shitty night, live on Sky, but extending our unbeaten run away from home to levels we are not used to, so content with a point, a clean sheet and no horror injuries on a horrible Weds night up north.

I think there will need to be change for Brum on Saturday and would like to see Willock starting and seeing if his influence can drive a better first half performance. Maybe drop Dykes and if we can play our passing game and bring Chair more of the ball around the edge of the box we might get more joy than having crosses not met or finished by Dykes.

One game a time and let's just see how far we get.

Thought Kane was excellent tonight. Not his fault as the sky sports commentator said that our strikers never went near post. As for the dykes bashing give him a chance. He worked so hard tonight. It will happen.

agree about Kane - and that last cross, awful as it was, well, he looked out on his feet after another 90 minutes up and down the length of the pitch. He puts the miles in!

Dykes first gilt edged chance which he apparently squandered. He took it well and on target, had the goalie going the wrong way but the ball hit his trailing leg. Keeper knew nothing about it. You call that a miss ? You call that squandered ?

I think Chair needs a rest, not dropping him, but just rotating the squad to freshen him up a bit. He has to put a lot of work in and I think today was a match too far as he looked off the pace in the first half. Completely understandable given his workload this season. I'd like to see Willock in that position. Maybe try Field in for Johansen. It would be hard to drop Charlie but maybe start with Bonne and Dykes and bring Charlie on for the last twenty minutes. I'd quite like to see him and Uncs in a cameo together.

We've got a lot of matches coming up and we do need to give some of our players a rest.

Disagree with the sky commentator on that. If our strikers are always going far post then it's obviously by design and Kane should know to aim there. And if there is no pre arranged design on where the players should be then he should be aiming for the man.

Can fault his effort or the fact he is always in position and he should be credited for that. But the crossing has been pretty shocking for a while now

I think Preston have more reason to feel disappointed than us. The conditions were miserable for both teams, but they owned the ball for the first half-hour, however we didn't concede. Part of that was poor finishing on their part but it's also because we've got a decent defence now. A year ago I would've put money on us being a couple of goals down by half-time in a similar match. Didn't happen. It was another clean sheet instead, something we've come to take for granted lately but were an occasion for dancing naked down Uxbridge Road back then. So, terrible match in horrible conditions but came away with a point. I sleep well.

He’s clean through on goal one on one and smacks it directly at the keeper.

Yes that’s a gilt edged chance squandered. Obviously.

I have been banging that drum for 2 weeks now nix its time to start Bonne then bring Austin on when the gaps appear in the second half.Once the chances dry up the goals dissapear and he was way too deep tonight according to the posters on the match thread.Keep his fresh and healthy and he will deliver the rest of the way.

If he hit it directly at the keeper how come it hit the keeper’s trailing leg whilst the rest of his body is heading for the other side of the goal. ? Have you seen the replay ? I guess all you want to do is slag off Dykes. Sleep tight

Austin was playing deep because we never had the ball in the first half. PNE controlled the ball leaving Austin stranded up top, so he'd drop in to help out and try to get the ball. Of course however as soon as we did get it and he'd move forward, we give it away again.

I think what we need to do is start Willock and Fields, and actually try to have an attack in the 1st half. Then if we are ahead sit Austin, Willock, etc., not wait until the end. Currently its like we just try to hold them in the first half, and then bring on our attacking players.

Yep he took it reasonably well so I wouldn't go as far as to say squandered. However, my issue with Dykes' finishing is that he tends to leather the ball as hard as he can every time. Power is nothing without control. As Johansson showed against Bournemouth you can guide the ball into the back of the net with accuracy. If Dykes can add a little more finesse and composure to his finishing then he'll score more goals.

Good away point in miserable weather up north, another very good defensive display and kept unbeaten run going. We have not lost an away game since Huddersfield on 5 December, 7 away games without defeat, pretty impressive.

What is it with the “up north and raining” thing?

The pitch was in great condition and the surface was slippery, great for pinging the ball about with incisive passing. Deal with it. I used to love playing in those conditions....and usually on a mud bath not a bowling green.

With regard to Todd Kane, crosses are a lottery, even for the very best teams. Getting the ball into the box at speed, when the potential recipients of it are moving (and so are the defenders) is hardly precise. Just getting the ball from the wing into a dangerous area is good. How threatening that cross turns out to be is just as much down to the strikers as it is to the winger or wing back making the cross. In seconds (split seconds?) they (strikers) have to assess what the player crossing the ball - usually with a full back challenging him - will try to do or is able to do. The precise and 'perfect' cross is rare.
Let's keep putting those crosses in and when they get past the first defender, a percentage will cause problems and our strikers will get goals.

I agree to an extent, kernow, but strikers will run to either post or at the goalie, so the target as Sinton says is "between the posts".

As I recall, and this is all from memory, so just a feel thing... Kane went through a run of not beating the man at the near post. That doesn't seem to happen as often now (I think) as he's going longer when he gets his cross away. His next area of improvement is going to be harder - learning to get a half-yard of space, as quite a few of his crosses get blocked by his marker.
