Harry Watling set piece coach on 21:57 - Jul 25 by Wren67

A hearty welcome to Harry Watling. A long overdue appointment as proven by our set piece performance against the Palace last saturday.

Everytime we got a free kick a feeling of excited anticipation brought me to my feet.

I needn't have bothered as the only threat they posed was to the first defender. I'd have got more excitment going to the loo.

Great news.

Hope he gets them well drilled and coached over pre-season

Oh….. hang on….

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I’ve got evidence of Charlie Owens curling one in direct from a free-kick outside the box last April/ May for the U23s. At the School End. To be clear he curled one in to the top corner of the goal not the top corner of the School End. It was a beaut and the only time I filmed any footy at home last season. Unfortunately I don’t know how to post camera phone clips on here so potentially belongs in the big fat lie thread.

Will the Watling Way be straight and direct?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Probably in the minority here, but questioning the necessity of such an appointment. How hard is it to coach how to set us up defensively and attacking wise from corners, how hard is it to be a little imaginative and creative with free-kicks? As others have said , Venables was doing it 40 years ago.
We are always talking about how FFP is curtailing our ability to bring in players of a certain quality. Maybe if we cut our cloth to suit our size (small/middling Championship club) with regard to the volume of coaching staff too and save our 'specialists personnel' for those actually on the pitch,, we might benefit more.

I am sort of with you

Venables was coming up with innovative set pieces 50 years ago when he was playing for us, some of them were real beauts.

It felt like a bit of a luxury to me at first glance but time will tell. if we improve enough at both ends to impact our points total to cover the costs in salary etc then it will be a result.

It might also have a positive impact on the players generally, feeling they are at a more professional club with forward thinking intent. Small incremental improvements often lead to significant cumulative increase in overall performance

Of course if he could grow us a hybrid Buszacii Langleyii that would be nice

Wouldn’t disagree with you. It seems it’s the done thing nowadays, I believe Liverpool have a throw-in specialist; so we’ve got that to look forward to.

At times it’s seemed we’ve disrespected set pieces and just shrugged our shoulders at the amount of goals leaked compared to how little we scored from them.

It’s incredulous that Barton was allowed to continue taking corners when it was a come to Jesus moment when the fcuker managed to get the ball to the six yard box. As for defending from them over the last few years…moving on.

Not sure what a specialist coach is expected to add above that which frankly, should be within the capabilities of the coaches and players to fathom for themselves. Maybe he studies the oppo for patterns etc. and then we train accordingly.

Call me old fashioned, but when you get a direct free kick in a good position, then wallop it good and ‘kin hard at the goal as everyone else charge down the keeper. Make their keeper work or at least make him feel like he’s going to have to look lively.

I think it was Gino who scored a great free kick at BHA; curled it in far post as everyone charged to the keeper’s near post.

'ere Metallica, is Mrs Watling right up your street?

Kind of hard to tell from that

It's about time we had one although corners are better than the first post man era, you just knew where the ball was going to go at corners.

I was watching a game with a mate on sky and like Ted mentioned said 'what's the point'. Highly frustrating.

Discovered today Jago started letting Venables oversee some coaching while at Rangers the first time. I don't think I knew that.

At first glance it does seem a bit of a trendy luxury item.

However, elite sport these days is about fine margins and with the amount of goals scored and conceded from set plays in the game, these are pretty big 'fine' margins.

It is also about a new style coaching set up for an excellent new training centre. As a club we have trouble attracting players at all levels. This modern approach to development and opportunities is a major tool in trying to convince them come here.

In terms of coaching numbers and associated salaries, as far as I know, Eustace and Gardiner have left, Mathew and Watling have come in. So no increase in personnel, so far. I don't for a minute think that Watling is going to spend all his time on set pieces, I feel sure that he will have other coaching responsibilities as well as his speciality. Maybe it's a stylish 'cut of our cloth'.

Spot on - these kind of appointments are necessary for modern clubs now.

Beale has already spoken about his coaching team being part of the overall group, but also having individual responsibilities within that. The players get coached as a squad but also do sessions in their relative positions, so Beale takes the strikers, Banfield does the defenders, etc... It's all joined up and makes sense, this position is another extension of that.

Well I did say 'probably in the minority..' Like most things we will have to wait and see. For me it's gratuitous, but hope I'm wrong. Just that on the one hand Beale is saying the playing squad needs trimming and on the other, he is is bringing in yet another 'specialist' coach. We'll soon need to hire another coach just to transport all the ...err coaches

Talk of making Loftus Road a fortress but then Hoos allows 3 k away fans 🤔

Well he HAS to allow 10% (1,700) anyway as per EFL and what's better - a full/nearly full lower school end or a scattering of home fans in there?

Good idea.

Also the first mention in years of turning Loftus Road into a fortress. This is a great idea. I can bring the cushions from the settee if someone else can bring bedsheets to throw over the top.

Yeah I do, we need to build our supporter base and doing offers in the lower school end should be a part of that.

In order to pay for it we could not have renewed Owen's contest who will never make it at Rangers

Hoos has said many times, offers just don't seem to work.

In fact, bizarrely, even if you give the tickets away free, you get a lot more no shows!

He's not bringing in a specialist coach! He's bringing in a coach to replace one that he's lost - it's just that the coaches responsibilities will be to do extra work on a dedicated area as part of their role - in this case set pieces. This includes coaches that were already here.
