Hopefully they will find a last minute buyer & best of luck to them.

I went there a through times when they used to play games on the Friday night & crowds were quite good. I also stayed until the final whistle when we let in the five goals. That wasn't a pleasant night!

Around the time when the Thames Valley Royals (Reading & oxford United amalgamating) was under discussion, wasn't there speculation that Southend & Orient would combine as Basildon Orient?

It isn't unsustainable in any way. There is loads of money there, in terms of crowds, which are probably better than ever, TV money and advertising.

What is NOT sustainable is paying silly wages and fees to chase the riches of the Prem. People have been saying 'loads will be going bust' since the 1980s. A few have: Maidstone (horrendously mis-managed by the chairman of the time), Bury and so on. But countless more clubs have shown how to be sustainable at any level with sensible stewardship.

Sad about Southend.

Bare bones.

Biggest problem with all these clubs seems to be owners. As soon as directors were allowed to receive renumeration and to take money out of clubs it was a recipe for disaster.

Look at Basingstoke Town, ground has a covenant on it and still sold off. Similar with Kingstonian. The money the Glazers take out of United is criminal. Reading after Madjeski. Bury FC, Brum, Wigan etc etc.

House of cards springs to mind and in a way it would be good for it to topple.

When you have people in the middle east, India, Malaysia, China, Africa, America and so on talking about Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc as 'their' club then you know the media don't give a fk about the likes of Bury or Southend.

A news report will barely get 1% of the clicks that a report on the big clubs will.

Just shows the most important man at any club is the Owner and just how invested they are virtually every club that is currently thriving has an owner that is fully engaged with the club. Not just in terms of money but time spent at the club overseeing the whole operation . Good luck Southend remember the 5 0 on Friday night and a 4 0 drubbing in the Full Members/Johnsons Paint where Dean Marney was so bad as sub he got subbed within 10 minutes of coming on somehow he played Premiership football

so is that the media's fault, or just a reflection on what people are interested in?

Most of the media are dependent on the current model for their living. Obviously, there are exceptions but it means many are at least uncritical and often cheerleading for the elite clubs. Same problem with client journalism and politics.

When you have 'fans' from abroad having their views given equal weight to those of the fans that live here, I think that is symptomatic of a wider problem in football.

Main stream media isn't entirely responsible, but they do push the agenda. Surely Luton's promotion to the Premier League is a much bigger story than Wrexham? I guess they don't have Hollywood owners or a Netflix show - but they do have a quirky entrance to the away end 🙄. Kind of sums up everything's that's wrong with journalism these days. Just reflecting what people are interested in becomes a feedback loop or an echo chamber. Surely good journalism should inform people and reveal interesting stories we aren't aware of, a bit like what we get on here?

if you think the media are uncritical of the elite clubs I'd have to wonder where on earth you get your media from. Even Sky have discussions about ownership these days, and are hugely negative about the Man Utd ownership, for example. I agree there's a lot of blind eye turning, but I also think you don't have to go very far to see a lot of in-depth quality journalism about it either.

Bare bones.

Don’t mind Southend
They used to be a good watch in the early nineties, Barry Fry got them out of an impossible situation when they looked dead certs for relegation in 91 a certain Stan collymore came on the scene then
Such a shame what’s happening and each passing day goes I become detached from the game I once loved , English football needs clubs like this surely West Ham can arrange a friendly

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Don't disagree with that at all, Joe.

I think both stories are interesting, and both have had coverage. Wrexham obviously had more, but, you know, people outside of football are quite interested in two Hollywood stars being owners in a way they probably don't really care about Luton. You can't just deny that fact. The coverage the National League got as a result I thought was fantastic. I get some football fans getting abit sniffy about it, but football fans tend to get sniffy about any club getting what they perceive as undue attention. I don't think covering the novelty of Hollywood ownership 'sums up what's wrong with journalism'. In what way?

Bare bones.

Hate to see the demise of any football club.
When I started supporting, we were playing the likes of Southend, Shrewsbury, Colchester, Gillingham and so on.
Whilst I'm concerned as any about the state our club is in, it shows that not all our old adversaries have overtaken us.

I went to the final game v Wealdstone back in April, 8,400 attendance, the chairman is a kunt, there’s a good catchment area, can’t see why someone doesn’t come in with a rescue package.
As Ted & the rest says the game is fcuked, I’ve renewed my ST at Rangers again for the umpteenth time as a donation & a labour of love, our days of competing are long gone unless another mug like TF comes along with more nous.

Fair points to raise and I do understand the interest in Wrexham and the appeal of the story. However, I feel it represents the appetite for simple stories as opposed to something with more depth. Maybe good/bad journalism wasn’t the best way to describe it?

I think there is a bigger piece around Wrexham/Luton, the business of football and how it’s governed etc. I suppose it’s not necessarily a mainstream story, but there’s definitely a story to tell.

Totally agree with that!
I'm sure somewhere like the Blizzard or whatever would look at something like that. As for the appeal of simpler stories - I think it was ever thus! I do agree lots of areas of the media, from film to TV to news constantly underestimate the intelligence of audiences (not all - but a lot!).

Bare bones.

Why are the foreign fans “fans”? Why blame the media? The clubs sell themselves to overseas fans and you can find there is enormous appetite for English football not since the premier league began but way back in the 70s and 80s, Big League Soccer. Manchester United has club houses built in Asia, merchandise that bring them more revenue than they would get locally. Clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have more fans aboard than those born locally, and most if not all are foreign owned even little QPR. If QPR real fans are counted exclusively locally born, not many can say they are not “ fans” - how many actually born in Queen’s Park? Clubs might take on the city names but in this present age the mega clubs are really global clubs with worldwide audience. I’m not saying it is a bad thing, or a good thing, it is what it is and still evolving. The us real fans and them fake fans argument is not a thing anymore

As I've mentioned before...Southend away in the FA Cup, Saturday, 3pm kick off, clear sunny sky, good hamburgers, huge Rangers turn out, 2 -2ft. One of my favourite ever games.

Surely some Hollywood types would be attracted by a club that has 'shrimpers' as their nickname.
