Captain 10:23 - Jul 16 with 5732 viewsHunterhoop

Has it been announced who the club captain is for next season? With Johansen and Martin leaving, someone new will have to step in. Field has been captain on the pitch a few times when both the above were injured, but I think he was match day captain unless Ainsworth arrived and moved it to Martin.
I love Field and he is a leader, but he’s perhaps not as vocal and motivating as some of the others in the squad may need. I think he leads by example more. So who are the other contenders?

In some of the Austria videos, it looks to me like Dunne and Field are Ainsworth’s two senior pros he talks to about the sessions at the end of them, so guess it will be one of them.

Any other views?

I recon it might be Begovic when he ends up signing.

Dunne would be my choice.

Agree with this, he does everything else so he may as well be captain too.

Field.......

My guess is it will be Sam Field, with Jimmy Dunne as his deputy.
Begovic and Uncle Albert I can imagine will be the "wise old sages" taking more of a background overview and feeding observations back to Field as necesaary.
Obviously you would expect Begovic to take full command of his box in the normal way,

Field or Chair probably.

Suspect it will be Field. But does it matter? I've never heard anyone in football talk about the captaincy as anything other than an honour. It's not like a cricket captain — a football captain makes no decisions other than the coin toss.

It’s certainly not as important. Obviously the captain doesn’t own the tactics and make in game decisions about changes to make, etc.

However, in a weak side, the captain role in football is still very important in organising everyone (especially out of possession around shape and positioning) and motivating people when you concede, and keeping focus when you score. And then there is the leading by example role.

Obviously you want lots of leaders in a team (I fear we don’t have them!). But I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of a captain. It’s not as critical as in cricket but it is still important.

I think it's vital.

Off the field the captain instills discipline and ethics and is the link between the manager and the dressing room. He needs ro be trusted and respected by both.

On the field when he gives instructions the players have to know that those instructions are backed with the power and authority that the role confers.

Field would be my choice, Chair and Dunne as vice-captains.

Why doesn't Chair get talked about more as captain? Committed, gregarious, perhaps longest standing regular player now.

Too often criticises teammates on the pitch not in a constructive way, often when it was his fault. Has done it with Kakay and Albert in from the Ellerslie a few times when it was entirely him.

Not sure if you’ve noticed how often Field bollocks him too during a game.

I think he is very good, works hard when his mind is at it, but he’s no leader in my view.

I agree, Hunter

I think he's only a potential leader at this stage, and his work-rate is admirable, but he has to learn a bit more about leadership before he could be considered as a captain.

Dykes would be my choice

Otherwise I would pick Ilias Chair

Think with both it would actually have a very positive effect on the quality of their own games. Think both would improve massively and seen as they will be our two most important players this season, Think this makes sense massively.

Field is consistent but my two choices are I am afraid much more left field !!!

In that recent video Field "The Shield" came across as quite shy and bit awkward. Dunne came across as a bit of a joker. Both quite endearing, but not necessarily what you'd consider classic captain material.

Having said that, I imagine it will be Field. His position in CM and the role he plays in the team make him the obvious choice.

I like Chair a lot, but I'm not sure his decision making is as good as it could be, which suggests he doesn't always read the game that well, which is important as a captain

Their tv personas are not the same as the people they are on the pitch.

Maybe, but then a captain's role is not only on the pitch.
