New word of the year according to the Oxford University Press. There are some rather more unpleasant words to describe our year one feels….. Marti has “rizz” I reckon.
Well damn it, Janet. Rizz, an abbreviated form of 'charisma', means style, charm or attractiveness, and the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner.
Oh man, one of the younger people at work dropped "Rob you really rizzed them" after a big meeting like a fortight ago so I thought I was ahead of the sland curve
People get a bit snooty about the evolution of words and slang, but I really enjoy it. 'Rizz' being derived from Charisma for example, as mentioned above, seems like natural progression of the language to me.
There are some more grammatical changes that are adopted I don't appreciate - 'on accident' seems to have replaced 'by accident' - as an example, but as far as slang is concerened, I'm all for it. The tricky bit is knowing when you're too old to use it!

As a result of frequenting a video game FB group I have picked up a lot of recent slang like rizz. I know which characters in the game are good ships, which teams slap/clap the hardest in fights and which characters have the fiercest drip. 🤣

The French have a similar approach but English slang/words creep into French language.
My personal favourite this year was "refoulement" as used in the Supreme Court ruling re Rwanda.

About a year ago we had a presentation regarding digital media by someone old enough to be my kid (and that's more about my age than his) and I literally didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Not the content, but the language used.

That sounds like someone not knowing their audience - slang terms aren't really the place for presentations...
The rest seems to be just a natural thing, one generation to the next shortens or simplifies words and phrases to suit themselves. I think a big difference here is online gaming / chat - where you commentate/communicate at speed to match the gameplay, so there's a whole vernacular created around efficiency - it's like a form of armed forces shorthand but created by kids!

I don't think it's in any way snobby to like people to use the English language properly. It's a beautiful language after all. I was having a quick pint in the pub last week when a group of not youngsters but younger than me sat at the next table. Their collective vocabulary consisted of about a dozen words - basically, literally, cool, oh my god, no way, I'm like, he's like etc. I had to move to another table. That said, when I was younger I called money bread, and used phrases like far out, groovy as a movie, and so on. So I shouldn't preach really.

I think you'll find that's more about the two O-Levels.
I've been watching a few American Youtube vids lately whereby they review musical instruments etcetera, more and more the word 'rad' was being used and after about three weeks I worked out that 'rad' meant radical. It was at this point I thought to myself/meself (please yourself) anyway I thought why not just say 'radical' not bloody 'rad' you stupid bloody elk faced Knob/nob from Wisconsin.
On reflection and after 'proof reading' I have discovered that I myself in my infinite wisdom have created a new word for the Oxford English Dictionary and that word Is *vids*.
Anybody that uses the word 'wow' should be tasered on and of for a couple of days and anybody that uses the word 'wowser' should be tasered to death.
