Agree with Brian here. The accusations of shutting the gates due to two idiots kicking off and consequently causing a crush could have been a catastrophic error. Sounds like people were hurt anyway and when there's kids involved it's extremely sad to hear this happened at QPR.

It seems something is a miss though, police saying they can't re-open the gate as it's private property?

I reckon the Police could have over ridden this given the circumstances unravelling. Surely there must be a full police investigation if the Birmingham fans have made a complaint?

"It seems something is a miss though, police saying they can't re-open the gate as it's private property? I reckon the Police could have over ridden this given the circumstances unravelling."

Er . . . It was the police ordering a gate to be opened that caused the Hillsborough crush, wasn't it?

There's been many a game this season I've wished I'd missed kick off, half time and full time
Maybe these Brummies were actually lucky?!

I missed the game but I always thought this fixture could come with trouble attached after the last time we played them at HQ and "Diadora-gate". It sounds like the Met had the similar drift

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

perhaps if they turned up on time rather than at 5 to 3 they might have made kick off.

Seems a bit mad for fans to surge forward and cause a crush and then blame QPR for it

This is a report of an apparently dangerous failure in crowd control. As such, it demands an appropriate investigation to find out if there was a risk to public safety, and if so, what was the cause, that preventative measures may be implemented.

It would be reasonable to winnow through this account to ascertain what relevant facts are present, what is hearsay but may be worthy of pursuit and what are merely lager-lubricated, disaffected criticisms by a partisan blogger.

Don't like the sound of this seems like bad decisions all round but these can cause lost lives in crowd situations.

Sounds like the gates were shut and coppers were still sending Birmingham to the closed gate. You have to plan for drunk fans getting late to the game especially as they we're up at Belusihi's 30 mins before kick off.

Doesn't sound like anyone controlled this situation the way it should have been. Closing an end to away supporters at our stadium when access is difficult at the best of times, seems mental regardless of two pissed up blokes. The issue seems to be that the police were still directing supporters to a closed gate and why it was closed - this surely is a last stance position.

Sorry but I've been to enough away games to realise you can get caught up in those situations in a moment. I'm sure it was caused by drunk Birmingham fans turning up late but we have a responsibility to look after all fans who visit our ground. Must of have been terrifying for families caught up in that.

I thought it was failure to open access to all the pens on leppings lane so all the fans got crushed at the front of the central one as the police opened the gate in a free for all?

Horses for courses really, each situation is different but the police and stewards need to be on top of the situation 100%. There may have been pissed up dick head fans there contributing to the problem but there were sure to be a majority of innocent ones just trying to watch their team.

I can assure you that very few 'innocent' fans got caught up in this. The ones caught up were the ones who were tanked up and looking for trouble. To put it simply they were in a mob so they were slowly escorted to the ground, to avoid potential fighting on the way and then they steamed the gates to have a go at OB and stewards. Don't give them any sympathy or the benefit of the doubt

Yorkshire Police would have you believe the same thing... Lets not assume to know all the facts.

An investigation into the incident with a review of security and safety measures would still be advisable in my opinion.

Unlike Hillsborough, I was there on Saturday and also had been warned by a Brum mate to watch myself as it had been planned for a long time.

Sorry, but "very few 'innocent' fans got caught up in this" isn't good enough. It sounds like there were innocent fans caught up in this, and even if there wasn't, it still sounds like a situation out of control.

Regardless of what did or didn't happen or who is to blame, this needs an investigation.

It's being investigated though, the club and the MET came out and said that on Saturday

But are they investigating the problem outside the School End or just the coin throwing?

There is nothing about any investigation in the News on the Offish. The Gladwin West London Sport article that daveB posted on another thread also carried a link to a story that says there are investigations into both the coin throwing and the on-pitch fisticuffs, but says nothing about the gate closure at the School End or any associated crowd control problem.

It appears that the Club and the Met know of nothing untoward regarding that taking place.

Was this gate actually closed, or are we getting all het up because some northerner with a hangover and black eye is having a vent on a message board? Lets not condemn ourselves just yet when, seemingly, the evidence so far, is from a group of away fans.

Who is condemning anybody?

It may well be that the problem was entirely caused by lagered-up Brummies determined to have some fun at the expense of the Club and/or the Met, even without regard for other away fans. It may even be that the whole episode was of little consequence or risk and the tale of fear and threat was wildly exaggerated.

But no-one is looking into it.

Seems a pretty ignorant thing to say. Once or twice a month I am usually part of a 'group of away fans' and I usually arrive at the opposition ground via a pub. Should anything that happens to me be put down to being another pissed up football fan?
