Astonishing opening day fact about QPR. You won't believe it! 13:44 - Jun 22 with 5002 views | DannyPaddox | Going full click bait on this as it's got me truly gobsmacked. QPR have never won on an English football ground outside of London on the opening day of the season since before WWII. I repeat: QPR have never won on an English football ground outside of London on the opening day of the season since before WWII. 73 years of Post-War League Football. How is this possible? We slay the Nottingham Forest demon and almost immediately another statistical goblin emerges to take its place. No offence to Cumbrian football fans but I feel like I've just discovered I actually support Barrow or Carlisle or someone so far down the pyramid we reside in some kind of inept and desolate football catacomb. *Heavily edited after I found out we won at Reading in 1938 [Post edited 22 Jun 2019 16:25]

Nearly beat forest away opening day of the 90/91 season, massive cock up by Beardsley near the end gifted them an equaliser.

A win at Forest on the opening day of the season back then would've been like killing this ...

I think you’ll find that he’s taking into consideration the fact that although we beat Portsmouth 2-1 away at the start of the 1915/16 season, the game was played in Belgium before both sets of players had to go over the top and charge the Hun.

Our last opening day away success was a 3-0 win 32 years ago in 1987 at Upton Park. Our only opening day win out of town was in 1981 in Wales. 3-1 at Wrexham. 4,665 there to see it. Unless I'm missing one and obviously not including any WWI Blackadder Simod Cup fixtures.

I was at that Upton Park game, a great day. Was really hot and we tore the hammers a new one. Kevin Brock scored a belter but in typical QPR style not too long afterwards was a target for the boo boys.

It was Dennis, Parker, Brock and Coneys debuts, lost a fortune after that day betting with Liverpool fans that we would win the league that season, went to Anfield when we were still top and John Barnes tore us an absolute new one.

Astonishing opening day fact about QPR. You won't believe it! on 13:29 - Jun 23 with 2919 views | DannyPaddox | A great piece of writing on the West Ham game in 1987 focusing on Jim Smith's innovative use of a 3-5-2 formation. I wasn't at this game. Was it obvious from the off that something new was happening? Any reaction from the crowd, comments at half-time etc? I ask because sometimes I'll hone in on the specifics and tactics of a game and sometimes I'll experience the match in a more broader way. Usually depending on a mixture of mood, where I'm standing/ sitting, and how much time spent in the pub beforehand. https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/article/bald-eagle-and-modern-way

Ta, had a vague recollection of that fixture. I was on holiday in Ireland and early that game day morning found myself close by the ferry port at Dun Laoghaire, mighty tempting it was to head back over.

We also started that season without a sponsor making our Adidas kit look the dogs bollox Half way through we lost seamen and had Nicky Johns cover which cost us big time Watching Paul Parker that year was a thing of beauty though , sharp, fashanu, Etc he had them in his pocket

There were West Ham fans being carted out by the old bill at 2.50pm.I lost count of how many were thrown out,but there was a picture of our fans used in an advert for more people to join the police force.I only know because I was in the picture. I will try and find it while I’m sorting out my old programmes. I also went to Liverpool because I thought that might be the title decider.Stupid or what?

Mainly I remember Brock's performance, which was outstanding. IIRC the fact that Paul Parker was playing centrally and Wayne Fereday was at wing back also caught the eye. It was a great day out, one of those rare occasions when just about all the new signings clicked at once and I was even daft enough to think Dean Coney would get su some goals eventually. It's hell of a shock to find that was the last time we won away on opening day TBH and makes me feel old.

Yeah I went to Anfield too, we took loads up that day and we were packed in to that old corner terrace and the seats next to it. Wasn't it just a day or two after that hurricane type storm that hit London? Anyway, we didn't even play that badly and had some decent chances. The obligatory soft penalty to Liverpool was duly awarded and then Barnes carved us up with the kind of brilliance that deserted him whenever he had an England shirt on (apart from that one friendly in Brazil).
