Final play-off spot 17:23 - Feb 19 with 16121 viewsNorthernr

As I've been researching it for the preview may as well put the full lot on here. Here are the points accumulated and the games lost by the team finishing sixth in this league since 92/93.

-Highest it's been is 80, lowest is 68, average is 73.6.
- Most number of defeats is 16, least is 10. We've already lost 10.
- Only five times has the team from sixth won promotion, which rather ruins the idea that the team that crashes in with a late run of form often fairs best.
- QPR are currently tracking at 59 points for the season
- To get to the 74 point mark we'd need 38 points from our remaining 18 games, more than 2 a game.

19/20 - Swansea 70, 12
18/19 - Derby 74, 12
17/18 - Derby 75, 11
16/17 - Fulham 80, 10
15/16 - Sheff Wed 74, 10
14/15 - Ipswich 78, 12
13/14 - Brighton 72, 12
12/13 - Leicester 68, 16
11/12 - Cardiff 75, 9
10/11 - Forest 75, 11
09/10 - Blackpool 70, 14, Promoted
08/09 - Preston 74, 14
07/08 - Watford 70, 12
06/07 - Southampton 75, 13
05/06 - Palace 75, 12
04/05 - West Ham 73, 15 Promoted
03/04 - Palace 73, 15, Promoted
02/03 - Forest 74, 12
01/02 - Norwich 75, 15
00/01 - West Brom 74, 14
99/00 - Bolton 76, 12
98/99 - Bolton 76, 10
97/98 - Sheff Utd, 74, 10
96/97 - Palace, 71, 13, Promoted
95/96 -Leicester, 71, 13, Promoted
94/95 - Barnsley 72, 14 (play offs only to fifth that year, Barnsley finished 6th)
93/94 - Derby 71, 15
92/93 - Leicester, 76, 14

Reading have already lost nine, but there's a six point gap between 6th and 7th and it's hard to see any of the chasing pack making that up unless Bournemouth continue to fade.

Is anyone offering odds on finishing 16th?

I predict that the majority of teams will neither be promoted or relegated.

It's quite simple maths...if we win all of our remaining games, we'll probably make the playoffs. Hope this helps...no thanks neeeded...etc etc.

Think I am the supreme optomist but even Clive's and others glorious musings can not tempt me , if we did get into play offs the three others should automatically decline from playing and allow us a serene glide into the PL.

Odds are very mearge for the challege ,66/1 to be promoted 25/1 to get in top 6, told that the bookies have that inside edge, more like a direct line to Mystic Meg, doubt if too many will take that challenge on,

Well I had us down for 60. Beating Brentford makes it 63, same tomorrow = 66...

It's a great point about the Peterborough and Leicester weirdos being the same season. But eight teams in this league are currently tracking well below 55 points this season, is it realistic that five of them are all suddenly going to sort their sht out?

Probably not. But hardly anyone suggested 55 (or more would go down); I still think you could need 52/53 to stay up.

I haven’t run the numbers but I suspect history shows that teams 2nd bottom to 18th at the half way point tend to collect far more PPG in the second half of the season compared to the first. It’s logical that in the final few months the mid table sides slack off and those in a dogfight scrape together a few more results.

I very much doubt we’ll have a 54-68 season this year, but I could see a 51-71/72 the way things are.

Wycombe apart everyone else is capable of beating anyone. As you’ve shown, the form table has shown some mid table sides in free fall and those who looked in trouble on the up (including us!).

It’s a tight league at the minute, further complicated by some teams having breaks for abandoned games and some dead on their feet. The top 5 look solid, but Bournemouth have been shaky and after that most games are a coin toss.

Like has been pointed out, we have been pretty fortunate with injuries. It seems like QPR is going as far as Charlie takes us.

Win today and it's on. Plus Henry was useless at Monaco, so if Bournemouth appoint him, that gap will soon disappear.

I've got a funny feeling that 54 points will be enough for sixth place this year.

Been looking at the fixtures and I can't see any of the teams currently in the top half picking up more than ten more points. And the teams at the bottom are rubbish. The table doesn't lie.

It is not out of reach but it is going to be the most difficult of tasks.......if the 6th spot is the lower number of points then we have a chance.

I'm positive, I have said top 10 with our squad is a realistic opinion.....6th is not but don't write us off

Plus don't underestimate the Charlie effect. It's so good to see us with some chutzpah again rather than the 'ever so 'umble' attitude. Yes, teams with parachute payments will always have an advantage but the rest of the league is much of a muchness.

After 28 games we've got 36 points. No one, as far as I have gone back 2004/05, has reached the playoffs from this position.

In 2018/19 Villa had 39 points after 28 games and finished 5th with 76 points. They subsequently won promotion in the play off final at Wembley.
In 2019/20 Cardiff also had 39 points after 28 and also came 5th but with 73 points.

The only team relegated, in the same period, with 36 or more points after 28 games were Hull in 2019/20. They had 39 points after 28 games the same as Cardiff!
(they actually went to 39 points after the 26th game). They finished bottom with just 45 points after selling their best players in January.

Actually, if we win all the remaining matches it would be a surprise if we didn't have automatic promotion with 90 points!

win today against Bournemouth and with the two games in hand v Wycombe and Rotherham I might start to believe we have an outside shot at the sixth place.

But then I'm notorious for rosier than rose tinted goggles.

You have all qpr’d before right ? Like as in know how the script goes yeah ?

We are at the hope / optimistic stage so you should all know that now we nosedive into a 6 game without a win run and have to start worrying about how Wycombe are getting on again .

Agreed - the geeky table might be kinda funny, but a 1.6% chance of the plyoffs is about right, I'd say.

Looking forward to a tough test today. Not looking beyond that.

Last three 2nd place teams had 83,89 and 90 points. If we win all of our remaining games, we will be on 90 points, so should go up automatically.
