| Foster's on 22:09 - Nov 12 by JamesB1979 | All my friends are of an age that they drink pale ale or bitter. I’m still a lager man and don’t think I’ll ever change. I need to change from Peroni and Moretti…. |
Peroni? Who on earth drinks Peroni?
| Foster's on 11:55 - Nov 13 with 2081 views | PlanetHonneywood | I remain firmly of the view that vast numbers of beer are actually one and the same brew, regardless of the packaging and who makes it. And I use the word 'brew' very lightly when maybe I should use 'manufactured' instead. For my money, you're best bet is to go for something made by smaller scale local brewers, before they got bought by one of the behemoths. Albeit, that you sometimes have to wade through some rough stuff before getting nectar. Speaking of which, on my last two visits back to London, I've ordered a Pride, finished neither and then ordered something else. Is it me, or have the Japanese ruined it already? | |

There was talk in a recent thread about Pride being poor these days. But I went on a Fullers crawl yesterday to get the last of the Red Fox before it disappers 'til next autumn. Some pubs had no Fox, so I had Pride - seemed pretty good. On this theme - the Distillers in Hammersmith is closed for refurb if anyone was heading there.

In fact, just get down to Booths and bask in the warm glow of their German beer section. If you're feeling adventurous, they have a rauchbier (smoked beer - Aecht Schlenferla brewery) that I first had down in Nurnburg. Got to say, it's very much an acquired taste but something of a Franconian speciality. Give it a bash - you might like it. Bitburger is funny. It's owned by Anhauser Busch (or at least, it was) and the Germans treat it like Carling Black Label! I quite like it.

How much are you offering for someone to take the alcohol-free Peroni off your hands?

i started last week dishing it out to neighbours , friends, family and jehovah's witness that knock on my door i'm so desperate to offload it. Jo wants it all gone. Only prob is Kensal it's 2 weeks past it's best before date which is 31/10/25. I can only drink up to 2 bottles of it before i start feeling sick. I tried loads of non alcohol lagers before the wedding and thought this the best of a bad bunch. Should have gone for the staropramen. [Post edited 13 Nov 15:44]

The big question for me, though, is whether the new Fosters will be worse than Carling? Anyone here actually like Carling? Anyone? It's virtually tasteless and what little flavour it does have is mildly unpleasant . I used to love Rolling Rock back in the day, not sure you can still get it.

If Cleopatra could bathe in milk, surely Disco could have a soak in some unwanted alcohol free beer? On a practical note... On the subject of Italian beers, this Sicilian number is very pleasant:

I'd honestly rather drink water than Carling. That goes for Carlsberg and Heineken too.

Ironically, you are talking about two lagers that are in the best selling top three in the UK. Fosters, which is distributed by Heineken, sells a LOT of volume, particularly in the north of England. I'm operating a big immersive event in the Waterloo area over eight weeks this Christmas and we have chosen to rename the Fosters with the event name. There's definitely an argument to say that the niche, independent beers and lagers are better tasting, but you will pay a premium for that quality. With the top selling lagers in the UK, controversially I would say they are much of a muchness - Carling's perception within the market is that it is a 'sports' lager, where as Carlsberg is perceived as the 'music' lager. Both are awful session lagers IMHO. Fosters has a perception of cheap, session lager in the market - hence renaming it to give it some appeal. We've chosen to have two lagers on sale at the event - Moretti, as the premium product and Fosters as the pour. Pricepoint is a 50p between the two products.
