The only thing I’d definitely do tomorrow, and I think it’s more important than any formation or other selection, is have Sam Field man mark Barry Bannan all game. Literally stand on his toes for 90 mins.
If Bannan is stopped, Wednesday will lose. Everything else tactically is of secondary importance. Field gets about the pitch, can tackle and is bigger than Bannan. Have him do that job, and make it a 10v10 game. We’ll win then.
I suggested this to someone at the club before the away game and was laughed at, as Bannan was some kind of geriatric footballer who holds no influence. Odd. |

I'm starting to think that a cardboard cut out of Bannan wobbling about in the icy wind on the centre circle could beat us... on its own.
I agree we have to man mark him, even the cardboard cut out. But we've said this every Wednesday game for the last x years and every single time we let him loose and give him free reign. If he assists or scores tomorrow I think we should buy him simply so he can't hurt us anymore.
This has all the makings of another classic 1-2 humiliating defeat. I just hope, for once, that we come out, mark him out the game completely and beat them comfortably. About 14 days ago I would have said this was a 100% win but as the last 3 games have proved, we are more than capable of f*cking up royally here. [Post edited 3 Jan 17:29]

Given the space we gave Dozzell in the 1st Half at Pompey, we must closedown this space against Bannan.
Field & Varane have the legs to do this, but most Managers these days are too arrogant to man-mark an opposition player.
I'd rather play Field & Varane in the 2 tomorrow with Morgan ahead of them as the CAM.
If Madsen does start, it will be an interesting watch to compare & contrast with Bannon.

It will be interesting to compare how often these two are aggressively running into space & demanding the ball as I think this is the root cause of our recent poor performances,
Also once they receive the ball how ambitious are they with it, are they content to be neat & tidy or do they show aggression & ambition to effect the game,
Hopefully Madsen can extend his good spells in games into a full 90 minutes & can put together some balls in behind for our Wingers & Forwards, we need more than being neat & tidy and to create real chances for our forwards and turn this mini slump around. | | | |

2 pages in and I am not sure if this thread is a joke or serious regarding Bannan .Its not Messi or Ronaldo in their prime its just an old guy while excellent on the ball cannot beat us on his own.
We need to score early that will put them on the back foot and allow us to get a few more to salvage something from this horrible week and a half.
