"Joyride" is also excellent. Set in Ireland, it sees a quirk of fate throw a teenager from a troubled family together with a woman - played by Olivia Colman - who has just given birth to an unwanted child. Poignant yet full of humour. |  |

I only go to the cinema once every couple of years, but I saw Tony tonight, based on Anthony Bourdain’s first kitchen job. It’s very padded compared to the original account, but it’s a lovely film, funny, entertaining, great performances. I think it’s going to Amazon, but see it in the cinema. |
Also saw Tony this past week. Very good but just a glimpse into his life (or about a third of Kitchen Confidential...would like it to have gone further into his NYC years. Enjoyed it though...Antonio Banderas was superb. |  |

Watched The Long Walk last night. Decent film, great acting and an original concept but the ending was a bit flat. I've only just found out the lead character is Philip Seymour Hoffmans son. If i knew that while watching, it might have given the story a bit more weight. Although still doesn't justify the ending
Also saw The End of Oak Street at the cinema. Avoid this film at all cost. Its literally one of the worst films ive seen in my entire life. I'm not even gonna bother anymore of my time talking about it. Its diabolical. |

Some stuff that I've seen recently.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die
Fairly enjoyable because Sam Rockwell is having a blast and gleefully sells the absurd. The flashbacks and world building feel like mini, sub-par episodes of Black Mirror, and the actual story arc is neither here nor there. Killed a couple of hours on a flight
The Good Boy.
Anson Boon is convincing as the young thug. Graham in one of his less show-stealing roles, but still good.
Kept me interested all the way. Doesn't quite go where you're expecting. Kind of odd without being profound - unless the message here is that we all just want to be chained up by a middle class family and taught the error of our ways.
The Odyssey
Still not quite sure what I think of this. My strongest takeaway is that I nearly had a panic attack during the battle sequence at the end. The music felt something like a shepherd tone sequence, a crescendo that kept building and never peaked, which combined with an action sequence on the enormous IMAX screen that was so frantic and for me incoherent that I could barely keep up with it, all left me feeling overwhelmed but not in a good way. A lot of people have said how much they enjoyed it being extremely loud, but - I don't know maybe I'm old.
It's had a lot of hype, and been the battle ground for online culture war stuff. In the end I just felt like it was a fairly decent film without being remarkable
Backrooms
Another YouTube-to-feature-release. The guy behind it is like 14 years old or something. The 'backrooms' look and feel great, and there are some exceptional, lost-in-a-nightmare sequences. The film captures something uniquely eerie, and is surely the most effective 'liminal space' horror film to date. I enjoyed it, and it's a fine piece of visual film making, although I'm not sure it's totally successful at making the leap from YouTube to mainstream feature film in that the narrative feels clunky and somewhat superfluous, and at nearly two hours it feels stretched. My issue with Backrooms is more of a comment on modern society. Back in the '80s, horror films featured things to be afraid of. Zombies, monsters, aliens, robots. Tangible horror shit.
Now they're making horror films about feeling a bit uneasy about architecture. Like, I get it, there's something there but it feels a bit low stakes to me. | |

Last week I went and saw the 10 year anniversary of La La Land.
Never seen it on the big screen and it was well worth doing. A great film and Emma Stone is lovely and fantastic while Gosling never looks to be taking it too seriously. |  |

We couldn't get into the Stop Making Sense tribute sense in the tent after Pulp so went to watch Annihilation absolutely off our faces in the cinema tent. Very poor idea. Up there with when the cinema stage was in the woods and we went to a 1am screening of Blair Witch whilst a little worse for wear. Worst walk back to the tent of all time | | | |

I was ok with changing the ending as they only intended to make one film, and the ending to the book would be quite unsatisfactory in a film, so that's fine. I just felt the changed dynamic between the group (particularly the Psychologist) removed the double edge horror of both the environment and the government being out to get you.
The scene in the cabin is still tense like nothing else. I feel Garland is a much better writer than he is a director | | | |

Pressure, the film that tells the little known story of the weather forecast for the WWII D-Day landing, is a decent, if slightly cheesy watch. It's mostly an accurate telling of the behind the scenes military meteorological machinations and the simple narrative takes just 1 hour 40 minutes, which is all that is needed.
Andrew Scott plays the chief meteorologist, James Stagg, and does so extremely well. He is an actor who I think is destined for great things. |  | | |

I’ve seen a couple of films in the last week or so.
Tony is a part of the early life of Anthony Bourdain, author of the book Kitchen Confidential. I thought it was quite good. Unspectacular but well acted and a plausible take on Cape Cod life.

I went to the first of the two de Gaulle films and it was magnificent, if a bit twisty round the edges in a few respects (eg the boy resister). Fantastic depictions of the tensions between the allies and on the demands of loyalty. Can’t wait for the second. |  | | |

Oak Street really suffered from piss-poor writing, bad pacing, annoying characters and the worst performance Ewan McGregor will ever give.
