Cricket 2025 County/International Thread by Superhoops2808 9 Apr 2024 13:39
With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.

As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.

But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).

Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)

I've started a new thread for the 2026 season, and I've started it now because the T20 World Cup starts a week today. (And in fact 2 months and we will be chatting county cricket red ball)

In a group with Italy, Nepal and Scotland and a pretty solid squad I expect that we will progress beyond the group stage. After that who knows and will depend on fitness. Curran and Salt played very well in the first game warm up game v Sri Lanka but tougher tests are ahead. Anyway, here is the squad for England (albeit still provisional).

Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood.

Be relying on Archer to stay fit (as per usual) - But hope that Brook finally stands up as captain, and Banton and Jacks perfom like we know they can at county level. If all that clicks should be a good watch.

I'd be surprised if they go back to Hameed - very un-Mcullum. Can see them going someone a bit more left-field. Could be McKinney, or trying out Emilio Gay/Asa Tribe at the top. James Rew is overdue a shot and Thomas Rew is due back from his A-Levels soon so could take the gloves and allow his brother to move higher up the order for Somerset.

Gay
Tribe
Root
Bumrah

What a top 4….

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Totally agree. Big fan of Crawley and think his critics are overly harsh but as an England fan first and foremost he is massively out of form and cannot start the next Test. If he does, my wavering support of Key and McCullum will be pushed over the edge. He is barely worth his place in the Kent side at the moment and keeping a brilliant youngster like Dawkins out of the side is not a good thing.

It will be a fascinating summer. I can't see it ending well; if we wanted to keep McCullum I think we should have 100% backed his methods. How can you keep such a strong-minded coach and tell him he has to change? I really hope I am wrong but I just can't see it working.

Funny you should say about Dawkins, just scored 222 not out for the Kent 2nd's

Trouble is with Crawley, he is on a central contract. So when and where he plays for Kent is decided by the England management. He cannot be dropped unless they make that decision.

Last season, Dawkins and Denly (jnr) opened and played pretty well. Compton is back now and deserves a youngster that he can mentor

In terms of England, RBlock mentioned Emilio Gay and he would be a refreshing option too

That said - When was the last time we got batting points

Full credit to Hollioake, he's finally cracked it. As usual across many sports, it was the fans' fault.

Would appear that whatever he has done has worked, first championship win in over a year.... And a proper thrashing too normally reserved for us to be on the receiving end!!

P.S: @ Beckenham... Are you going to the game in your backyard in a few weeks time? 15th - 18th May

Guessing us Kent and Surrey supporters must be happy with the start of the T20 - Have to say as a Kent supporter... Was very nervous while Rossington was at the crease, but happy with the result. Billings doing more in one innings than he did the whole of last season. A very impressive innings

In the County Championship, Middlesex can't bat, Consistently. In the T20 they can't bowl. I don't understand why Morgan got picked and never given a bowl when others were going for 12 an over.

Middlesex are so bad that the Men's game v Surrey is on first in double header probably because the Ladies are likely to be competitive. If Surrey bat first could see 300 plus

Amazingly year after year Middlesex seem unable to adapt to playing T20 cricket.

Although there is one constant in all this, which is the Director of Cricket, Alan Coleman.

Feels like he may be related to Bicycle Ben.

And now Zak finally finding some form. Recent turnaround in our fortunes is quite lovely to see, fair play to Hollioake et al. Went to Beckenham v Durham and was very impressed by Ekansh Singh and Dawkins, definitely some good future players there. Bit worried that Joey Evison is being forced out; I see that a bit like Sam Field - solid and reliable if not spectacular...you need these stalwarts even if a bit out of form.

Dont think Joey is being forced out. He was poor v Middlesex and also picked up a twinge while batting. Its nice to have options to rotate I think.

Yesterdays game was epic. Sussex got 92 off their powerplay with Tom Rogers losing his head and I will be honest I nearly folded up my camping chair and toddled off home - So glad I didnt because we pulled it back well and then batted calmly and built innings. Zak was simply stunning yesterday, and batted as well as I have seen him for a long time. Like a weight has been lifted off his back.

Couple that with a great womens win too and it was a great day out though I did fry a bit. Spoke to AH and also Compton (who hopes to be back for the next red ball game next month). AH is very friendly but wouldnt wanna get on the wrong side of him!!

On to Friday for the Battle of the Bridge and perhaps a reunion with our old friend Cox.

Gotta have our moment of glory after tonight's superb T20 result for Kent v Surrey

Especially after we were steam rollered by Essex on Friday night - Was embarrassed to be sat in the stands

Great way to bounce back and we appear to have a very strong T20 side this year. I don't have a clue how qualification works this year but hopefully we will be there or thereabouts

Special mention to Middlesex who got their first win of the T20 campaign last night

Surrey are awful this year Superhoops2808.

Almost all the batsman apart from Tom Curran cant buy a run and the bowlers havent exactly being pulling up trees either.

Surrey have been pretty uncompetitve in the county championship also.

Was impressed with some of your bowling attack also.

The only thing i have over you this season is sadly Mr Crawley looks in terminal decline.

But Surrey are doing nowt in all competitions this season.

Be interested to see the Test team this week. See how they go..

I was at the Oval today to witness ultimate joy !!!

You'll still beat Middlesex on Wednesday though.

I'm still undecided as to whether bother going to The Circle for it.

And we're back! (Weather delays allowing).

Difficult conditions to bat in for Emilio Gay to make his debut, but excited to see a new opener get a crack. This New Zealand team are a really good outfit, particularly their seamers who will be a real threat.

Interested to see Ollie Robinson back in with the new ball as well - well needed after Atkinson wilted in the Australian heat.

Really looking forward to this.

The NZ attack has been excellent. Even with Matt Henry off the pitch.
I don't think England have given their wickets away but are already 4 down.
