| Man city vs Liverpool ghost goal 07:15 - Feb 9 with 3429 views | hoops_legend | I was just watching this last night and found myself slightly bemused by the goal being disallowed and a red card Yes I understand the rules and yes two wrongs don't make a right but I see the tussle as one passage of play. The Liverpool defender tried to cheat, yes cheat, and stop the goal. Why is it then that he's actually given what he wanted (which is to stop the goal) when he was cheating? Surely the fact the ball ended up in the net means football should prevail and goal is given I don't agree with statement that ref played advantage and then haaland committed a foul. It was a tussle and one which the Liverpool player was trying to commit a foul and not play ball [Post edited 9 Feb 7:17]

Going forward had it been given the team playing Liverpool next week would be facing a player that should be suspended and what if city end up on the same points as Arsenal and win the league by one goal? |
Hmmm it’s a mess. Given that players can be booked for retaliation, why wasn’t Haaland booked for hauling back the Liverpool defender after he himself had been fouled? After he took his shirt off after the pen that would’ve been a second yellow and off too. Why isn’t that the correct decision? Maybe missing something but…

What if the score was even? What would/could the consequences be for not allowing what most likely would have been a winning goal and two extra points? What if City missed out on the title by 1-2 points? This is the problem, too many if's, but's and maybe's and the whole point of getting VAR in was to cut a lot of that out but seems to have got worse.

As explained already, very simply summed up: Szoboszlai commits foul, advantage is played. Szoboszlai then could clear ball, but is fouled by Haaland, which has to be blown for. But that means no advantage, so have to go back to first offence. |
You work in law don't you

I think because the Liverpool defender hauling haaland back was preventing a goalscoring opportunity but haaland hauling the Liverpool player back wasn't? Maybe didn't warrant a yellow?

I do love that he was sent off for preventing a goalscoring opportunity when the only thing that actually stopped the goal was the referee.

Football died a long time ago and got replaced with the commercial beast we see today. The VAR incident from yesterday is brilliant for the broadcasters and the school kids - it means prize w*nkers like Carragher and Neville can c rap on about it forever and a day. And sadly there are people who lap it up. And the whole thing goes around in circles getting bigger and bigger. Match going fans have long since stopped being of prime (any?) consideration to the organising bodies and the broadcaster pay masters, and that will never get reversed. It will get worse, and worse and the game as we knew it will continue to suffer. it's why I struggle so much with the dilemma of QPR getting promoted - as far fetched as that may seem currently. On one hand, it's why competitive sport exists and supporters should want their club to succeed. On the other, the thought of being part of that circus they call the Premier league just does not appeal. Enjoy the Championship and Loftus Road while we still can peeps - it may not exist in this form for too much longer [Post edited 9 Feb 18:22]
