For anyone who doesn't know Boro caught someone with some very sophisticated cameras and recording equipment spying on one of their training sessions.
Apparently Boro are looking into the possibility that Saints have done this to other teams this season.
Nightmare timing for the EFL. I can't see any way for them to fudge this

Thing is, Southampton either cheated and deserved to be thrown out, in which case the team they cheated shouldn't be punished for losing to a team that's cheating. Or it wasn't cheating and they should play in the final, but the EFL have decided it was, so why punish Middlesbrough for losing to a team that cheated. |
I don't see what case Hull have for going up without playing really, They won the semi final and were always going to play one of these 2 teams, It's not ideal to have to wait till tonight before it is confirmed but it's not been ideal for either side. Boro coming off a massive emotional loss need to raise themselves again with half the team injured as well.
Just play the game and the best team wins on the day.

The lad has obviously been hung out to dry and no doubt it has Eckhart’s fingers all over this. If I was the intern then the best thing for him to do is to whistleblow and admit to every training session he was instructed to spy upon. It may well lead to even more points deductions as I understand that two points for each game admitted has been the sanction so far. Southampton has got what it deserves. Cheats should not prosper and the punishment is not disproportionate. I give the example of Ben Johnson who won the 1988 Olympic 100 metres only to be found afterwards that he had taken performance enhancing drugs. Had he won fair and square he would have been a lifetime hero to the Canadians and no doubt would have earned plenty from his success going forward in sponsorship and other means. But instead he lives a life in disgrace. | |

In all probability they would have continued doing it in the PL until they got caught. At which point they would have had the FA coming after them for huge fines and points deductions.
In theory the FA could still go after them if they were found cheating in the FA Cup. Arsenal might be interested in that, although they might not bother now that Arteta has finally won the league for them.
Remains to be seen what other EFL clubs choose to do.
It's a bit suspicious that the two instances of cheating that Saints coughed to were:
- Ipswich, promoted so no interest in taking it further
- Oxford, who won the match and also won't want to take it further
But it's the World Cup in a few weeks. The EFL are probably hoping everyone just forgets about it and moves on. | | | |

Of course the lad who did the actual spying needs sacking: he’s an adult not a little kid only following orders.
And Ryan Manning and his agent will have worked out there is a nice little triple earn to be had from this: sue Southampton for loss of possible earnings/emotional distress, demand his contract is fully paid up, and join a newly relegated club with a large signing on fee. Win win win. |  | | |

They were deducted 3 points for it which they were furious about, seemed hugely unfair at the time as they offered to play the game on a different date which is surely what would happen now.
Anyway one of the teams who pushed hard for a points deduction saying well rules are rules and who benefited for it was.........Southampton.
