Well that opening game got me nodding off nicely. VAR/the laws of the game the talking points as always. Well done FIFA. Not long before the highlights are just a reel of refereeing/VAR decisions.

Canada score a goal in a WC final for the first time. So that's one monkey off our back.
We have some decent players but I'm not sure the coaching really brings out the best in them.
There was a big cheer in our house as the missus is Canadian, they really should of won.
Only annoyance was having the camera continually cutting to Ryan Reynolds, if it wasn't bad enough when we play Wrexham we now have to see him in the WC. 😤🤬

It's absolutely decades since I've had anything more than a passing interest in World Cup's or international football come to that, but today is different. I've been chatting with a lot of Scot's fans, (the men from Rutherglen), giving head's ups on areas, bars, what's worth doing, what's not, and I must admit it's been quite the buzz. Plenty of Haitian flags around as well (Greater Boston has a large community), adding to the atmosphere. Think I'll watch the game in the Eire Pub (Dorchester) tonight, they're expecting a few Scots' lads, should be a good laugh.

Promise David looks useful. An absolute unit, 6 foot 5 and if you look at his goal scoring rate at club level, 49 goals in 97 games over the last few seasons, that's Charlie Austin level goal scoring. Sadly out of our league in terms of transfer fee but very useful player for Canada. Nice flick on for the goal.
I also thought Kone was immense in the middle for Canada. How nice it would be to have two Kones?
Well, my involvement in Scotland's World Cup challenge continues apace. After work, I shot off down the Stop n Shop supermarket in Quincy where I bumped into a few lads from Dumfries looking most disheartened in the store's alcohol section. "Wassup boys", says I ? "Where's the Vodka, pal", they replied (I think they were going to say ya English bastard, but realized I might throw them a lifeline), "not here" I told 'em, then briefly outlined Massachusetts's quaint laws on liquor sales. As I was just finished with the grocery run, I offered to drive them to and back from a local 'offy', they accepted. More good-natured banter ensued, as in, "Queens Park Rangers' you're joking", one turned out to be a Newcastle Utd supporter, apparently, they have a steady fan base in Scotland. Anyway, booze purchased, I dropped them back at the Holiday Inn Express, where I saw quite a few more of the kilted community, they're not heading to Foxborough until this evening, doubtless to say, a little worse for wear.

You can laugh and ridicule Curacao, Haiti or Cabo Verde (some will be surprised they are even a country) but no team has the right to be one of the 48, Ask Italy
But I was reminded to why the World Cup is the World Cup;
Watching the Qatar vs Switzerland, the two team are poles apart you think, stats favoured the Swiss and they were by far the more dominating team, have more of the play and Qatar were relying on keeper heroics or wave of poor Swiss attack to stay in the game at 1-0. I thought Switzerland could see out the game but in that one momentous switch, in injury time, one rare Qatar attack and bam they scored with a thumping header 1-1.
This reminded me of the world game that it is supposed to be, no team is guarantee of a win. You have to work for it. Xhaka and Embolo playing full match and not substituted shows us the coach thought it was never a secured situation they were in throughout the match. And the moment came to undo them to the disbelief of the crowd, stunned Swiss supporters and equally stunned jubilant Qatari crowd.
Stay humble, respect those small teams. They earned the right to be there.
What will become if the World Cup became the theatre of only “big” countries can play and win? People voiced out that the premier league is gradually becoming a close league of rich and the elites, killing the traditional league system where you see a Wimbledon coming from nowhere and won the FA cup and were in a brief moment playing at the top league. And did we all forget the not ago the Real Madrid and Barcelona led breakaway European Super League which involved the big clubs of England that was stopped due to backlash from fans, players and governing body.
At the end of the day, it will be a Brazil, or an Argentina, or Spain, or Germany , or even England winning the World Cup I have no doubt. But the World Cup should be accessible to all nations if they are capable to qualify. No closed doors. 48 teams, you have 3 hosts, a month of carnival who deprive the fans of the nations that little bit of excitement and enjoyment
If you still don’t know where the heck is Curacao, consult an Atlas. Yes they are not a sovereign state but a dependency of the Netherlands and believe me you they are officially the “Country of Curacao”. So there, Curacao is a country. No less the home countries of football, or any other country playing in the World Cup.
