Points accrued 13:59 - Sep 21 with 1997 views

So having just read Clive’s stirring report on our PNE match and the valid point that not all ‘wins’ will result in three points. That said, in the cold light of day, it is probably 2 points dropped based on current for. So having accrued 10 points out of the first 12, we have only take 3 from the last 12. We are now right on the brink of- still in the play-off picture, but potentially one loss from 11th or 12th. Personally happy enough just to be in the mix, but clearly some much tougher games the far side of the International break.
Not wishing to turn this into another injuries (or God forbid, Kolli) thread, just wondering what is everyone’s general take of the first 8 games?

I said we would/should be top six travelling to West Ham, and we are.
We've definitely left points on the board unfortunately - Bolton, Charlton and Preston - each for different reasons.
It gets tougher now. You've got West Ham and Southampton in October. We'll know a lot more about us by November IMO.

I must apologise to everyone in advance but I remain unconvinced about our credentials to do well this season. Perhaps it's just me but I worry about stats.

I am troubled we have only won once in 5 home league and cup games.
I am troubled we have gone 4 matches without a win.
I am troubled we haven't played most of the best teams yet.
In reality we have only won 3 out of 8 matches. Bolton and Lincoln have also won 3 games, in Lincoln's case, all 1-0 away which takes some doing.

Only we could go one down at home in 20 seconds to the bottom team which to me is same old Rangers. While we struggle converting chances it annoys me that Bolton can go to the Rangers graveyard of Carrow Road and score four, where we usually lose for fun.

I acknowledge our performances are better but I don't think it is reflected in our results. A really good team would have dismantled Bolton, Charlton and Preston. I fear if we are wasteful in front of goal against the better teams we will pay for it.

Early days I know but I can see the warning signs so I won't be getting carried away that corners are being turned for the season ahead. Sorry folks...

TBH I prefer it if people aren’t over-excited about our prospects because it turns every loss into a major catastrophe. Equally I don’t think we should throw the towel in either. Because by the same token as Bolton wining away at Norwich you could’ve chosen to see it as making our draw at home to Bolton not look so bad.

We’ve still only played eight matches. While I’ve got some hope we’ll be in the final eight at the end of the season I am certain there’ll be twists and turns. So I will enjoy wins and be excited but not think one win means we’ll be promoted. I’ll also be disappointed with losses but not think it means it’s all over.

Of course we have some things to be concerned about. But we also have a lot to be encouraged with: our new found fighting spirit not least of them.

Since 2010/11, the average number of points needed to finish 8th is 69. That's 1.5 points per match. We're currently 1 point better than that rate, at 13 points after 8 matches.

The quality of our football this season has been the best I’ve seen since Warbs (and arguably better), we’re strong at the back with a great keeper (Saturday blip excepted), the squad finally has some heart and fight in it (see also Sat) and we’ve got a deep group that isn’t full of unproven kids we might have to throw in in emergencies.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season, yes we should have had more points but I’m looking forward to seeing us play West Ham / Southampton. I think we’ll surprise them

I think we lack quality out wide and lack a playmaker in central midfield to actually make the playoffs but we should challenge.

Injuries is our biggest issue still, for all the talk of how great we are doing on that front at the fans forum we are losing at least 1 player a game through injury at the moment, Vale has pulled out of Ireland squad so no idea how long he's out for.

I've enjoyed the first 8 games but you can make a good case to say it's not going to be any different again.

If you compare results to last season it's 3 points better off.

The next batch before the next International break we took 3 points from those 7 games last season so room for improvement

Southampton - Lost
Burnley/Coventry - Lost
Lincoln City/Sheff Wed - Won

I think we'll have a better idea after those games

Nah, we have great quality in midfield and at the back if we don't get too many injuries, and plenty of half decent wide players, plus a good ball playing Keeper. What we lack are players to put it in the net, 33 shots on Saturday but just 7 on target. We're creating openings, but not converting enough. Kone is nowhere near where he was last season, With defences tending to lie deep, Burrell is not finding the space he did last season and seems to have lost that extreme turbo boost of pace to rob defenders as last season, or doesn't trust his hamstrings. Further when he gets a chance he's not taking many, too much straight at the Keeper, or wide. Lloyd willing but no goals as yet, Obikwu, only seen 10 minutes this season, and Kolli not even that. We need a competent striker or two which aren't so easy to find.

The way this is laid out is really useful. I really cannot believe that up to Lincoln we will only win once but hopefully I wont be eating my words after that run. I think we are too resilient this season to go that amount of games without anything.

I disagree with the lack of quality out wide. Smyth, Poku and Saito can be a real handful on their day and we need them firing more often. So we have the quality, just need them on their game all the time

A playmaker in CM could be Chair but to be honest it has been a while since we had one of those. I think the injury issue is something that every club in the championship is suffering from this season, bur we take a harder look at it because of the last 2 years and the man in charge of injuries.

And looks like just as we look to be getting Kone back on the field some tw*t decides to wipe him out today.

I think 12 points from those 7 games you have listed and I would be happy with that

Biggest problem is up front at the moment - two out of five strikers in the squad on Saturday. Imagine this team with Nahki up front.

My biggest concern is that we are creating 20 + a game (needs fact checking) with such a low conversion. Feels like we could get some big results if we can get this right. Need a fit King Kone.

I hear you - hear you loud and clear.

I'd hope some planners at the club are sitting there saying "all good, nice and positive....BUT! We are now SIX points behind our target for this moment in the calendar"

We now have to win a couple of games those planners would not have had us down as winning.
The good news is I don't see us going on one of our favourite runs of six defeats in a row so reasons to be cheerful for the next block of games.

Those six points would have us top I think? Doesn't matter one way or the other as it would be a totally false position due to those fixtures and the small sample of games played. After we've rattled through 12 matches let's see where we are at and where others are.
There's always outliers - for Leicester see Burnley etc, etc, etc.
Who knows - we might be one at the right end for a change.

Out of all the stats it's the goal conversion one that should concern everyone.
We've already had a game with tem on target and a big fat NIL goals to show for it.
Thirty blaady three shots on Saturday resulted in two goals but still only ONE point.

Just another 14 wins and a draw and we'll be all good..........

I think the wide players are good but very inconsistent with their final ball, potential to be good enough but over a season I just think we lack a bit of quality. We have a squad who can make the playoffs but it won't take much to knock that off course and we're not the luckiest club.

At the end of the day we go to be entertained. Well I go anyway, but sometimes, like Saturday, we remember that is what it was all about.

I don't really care about the stats in the first few games, but what I saw was fantastically entertaining and showed loads of character.

I was a bit encouraged by a couple of the balls in from Adamson. They really deserved someone getting on the end of them.

It may be wishful thinking but I do think we could click soon and give someone a tonking. But I hear what you’re saying about luck.

You are right I could have said a draw with Bolton is better than Norwich managed but we all saw the game and we should have beaten Bolton. The real point I was trying to make is that despite a good start, we have not won more games than Bolton or Lincoln who came up from league 1. It just rankles with me that Bolton can score four away at a ground we constantly fail at while we couldn't score on Saturday on two occasions from point blank range. If just one of those had gone in we would have had more time to get the winner.

I agree we are harder to beat and playing better this season but I don't feel it is truly reflected in the results. Like I said previously we haven't won in the last four and we now have a tougher run of games. By the end of it we could be lamenting another one win in 10 games scenario if we don't put the ball in the net. Hence my lack of excitement as I have seen this script many times before.

If Rangers are going to turn me into a believer we have turned a corner, then I will need to see us win away in London, also win at Norwich and actually beat teams like Sheffield United, Burnley and Southampton at home at the very least.

And I get that. My point was you can choose any matches or metrics to support your case at such an early stage of the season. So I could say we’ve won more matches than Wrexham, Birmingham and former Premiership demotion Championship Champions Burnley, who haven’t won any games yet. And the same as Norwich and Millwall. Who’ve all probably got much more expensively assembled sides.

So yes it’s disappointing to not beat Bolton at home but it’s not a disaster. Nor is winning a couple of matches at this stage of the season mean we’re likely to be promoted either. Given that Hull didn’t start to consistently pull ahead into the playoffs until early December that seems like a more realistic cut off point. We don’t know how we’re going to do against the mid table and top six sides quite yet as we haven’t played enough of them. Nor have we played enough games with a week gap as so many of them have come in a two week window.

So while I really enjoy winning and am disappointed with drawing or losing I don’t think either mean anything quite yet in the context of a 46 match season.

yeah it sounds like I'm down on the team which I'm not, a lot to like about them and really enjoyed it all so far, I just think there are a few warning signs with the lack of ideas when teams put players behind the ball, we've a lot of players who have similar skillsets so we become a bit predictable to play against. Mind you the majority of this division are no better to be honest and have similar problems.

Yes. I remember a couple of seasons ago asking that question how do you deal with teams that get behind the ball as we’ve consistently found it hard to play against. Middlesbrough seemed to float balls across the top and find gaps between the lines but you need really accurate passing for that.

Will be interesting to see what Stephan does when he’s got more time to prepare. Could be interesting if we can get Kone fit and Kolli back in the fold.

That last paragraph in my eyes is the key to our season and how it unfolds. He has just not had enough time with the players to work on a way to break teams down who put all their players behind the ball.

I think against the sides like Wet Spam we will be able to play more open football but someone like Lincoln may be not so. Lets see how it all pans out but I am enjoying the start far more than I have for some years
