Everyone worried that if you don’t follow the crowd you’ll be left behind. I’m all for exploring complementary therapies including nutrition and psychological approaches, but there has to be some evidence base for it. It’s the latest big thing or we’ve always done it that way are neither very good ways to judge effectiveness.

The Guardian's science desk loves nothing more than pointing at a new development and kissing its teeth and declaring that there's little evidence for it yet. There's little evidence that standing a metre away from an exploding hydrogen bomb is bad for your health.
| Former Coventry performance head on the 'pseudoscience' taking over football on 12:04 - Sep 22 with 797 views | Bluce_Ree | Interesting read. Back before the whole MAGA thing, I used to listen to Joe Rogan's podcast. Don't judge. I watch a lot of MMA and so his was the podcast to go to for that sort of thing. Anyway, he had a supplement company called Onnit and he'd always go on about whatever stuff they were selling. And then it'd be like 'I've start taking [whatever] and now I've got so much more energy.' Well, you were taking all sorts of shit before. And that was giving you energy/recovery/whatever. So how can this be giving you even more. Like how do you even judge that? Back when I was doing Muay Thai I took a bunch of things but always had the nagging feeling they were doing eff all. So I stopped and I didn't feel any different. And why would it? These days I take a little vitamin D and I have no idea why. As for football. Eat well, train hard and play 4-4-2 and see what happens. It's got to be better than all this 'false 9' bollocks. | |

Not shocked when you see some of the absolute cnts involved in it. As she says alot of it is placebo. You got a young bloke on £100k a week demanding something be done about his sore hamstring, stick a bit of tape on it and that will hopefully shut him up. Drink water, get good sleep, eat well. Irony of the message is it is not intellectual at all, it’s the very common sense most ‘football man’ ‘no tippy tappy stuff’ types claim to believe in. Doctor of Philosophy is just what PhD means, the PhD will be any subject - presumably sports science or psychology of whatever she has. *edit, I checked. She has a PhD in Sports Psychology. [Post edited 22 Sep 14:04]

I understand what a PhD is. The post I replied to mentioned they would be interested to know what a Doctor thought about the use of kinetic tape, she isn't an MD, if that makes a difference? Being a Dr in Philosophy, she could probably help me understand why I'm thinking about this *edit she did a BSc in Sports Psychology, which is the thing before the PhD I'm not trying to belittle her, just think its interesting when you see someone, like Dr Gillian McKeith being presented on TV with the same gravitas as Dr Xand, talking about similar subjects when only one of them is a medical doctor [Post edited 22 Sep 15:09]

It's not, and it's especially not if you're an elite athlete following nutritional advice. Vit C is in pretty much all fresh fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, and you don't need much. So unless you never eat any fruit and veg, you'll be absolutely fine. [Post edited 22 Sep 15:56]

Not true. There's research-based factual evidence and there's bullshit. Experts will only quote the former.
