Mine was around September 1985 in that newsagent that used to be opposite The Coningham in Percy Road. Think it was called Starrys? Hayesender May know.
Me and my mate Paul C, who lived down Percy Road so knew the best time to get in there. We had been plucking up courage and planning it for ages. One would go in and distract the owner and give the all clear when the shop was empty, the other would scan for the best one to get and stick it inside a copy of Shoot or something. The most difficult not eas choosing which one to get. They all looked pretty decent to be honest.
All went surprisingly well and we got a copy of Men Only and Shoot with barely a murmer from the owner.
Became a regular event that did. Happy days.

Surely jazz mags had to be stolen, inherited, recovered from railway sidings/overgrown bushes down an alley, swapped, or borrowed on a very short term loan from your Dad’s stash in the garage/shed when your parents were doing a big shop? Never heard of anyone actually buying them. |  |

Mine was a rental from a budding entrepreneur at school, I think it was a Playbirda but it might have been Lovebirds, i remember that Mary Millington was on the cover in white stockings and not much else. I was 10, maybe 11, got invited to a school chums house for a birthday party. Dale Collins was 'is name , parents house on Brook Rd, Wembley the venue. Great kid but a little scary. Six of us there and he had us compete in this armed conflict thingy using dustbin lids as shields and (I thought),rather sharp metal swords. I couldn't sleep right for weeks.
Another odd thing....Dale says to me one day, "do you go to church"? Y'know, I'm fcking 10 years of age with Catholic parents, yeah I go to church. He says, "can I come with ya next Sunday"? Delighted I was to reply yes, who wouldn't want yer mate along to liven up a Sunday. All goes well, we're quietly arsing around as the Mass winds along - then the collection. Dale has no idea that this money shakedown is an essential part of the ceremony, he looks a little confused so I whisper, "stick 10p in the basket". He fires his silver in, then as its about to be whisked away, grabs the basket and starts picking out coins! I'm mortified, what in gods name is he doing, I want to die, my parents are watching me, I cannot look at anything but the carpet for the remaining 15 minutes.
Its over, we leave St. Erconwald's , I have not been able to speak nor look at Dale as the heat from my mother's eye's have made me melt into the floor. Finally, I get the opportunity, "wot the fck were you up to with the collection mate?"..."huh" comes the reply, "you said put 10p in the basket, I only had a 50p coin so had to root around for the change".
